Fiat 9 speed auto recall notice issued

Sorry to bang on about it and I know there’s no direct correlation between a motorhome and a high performance sports car but imagine if Ferrari had a gearbox problem and told its customers they were reducing BHP and torque to solve the problem ?
O hang on Fiat own Ferrari ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I still don’t think they will reduce BHP or torque, the gearbox has handled that in earlier engine versions. I continue to think they have simply got the timing of the gear changes and the engine output slightly out of sync in a way that can put extra strain on some of the gearbox components.

On older automatics I used to back off on the accelerator a wee bit to encourage smoother gear changes. These modern boxes, with several more gears, are too quick for that and we have to rely on the software to take care of synchronising gear changes with engine speed. They may just need to tweak this a little on the more powerful engines.

I think the 9 speed is a bit of a hybrid. It's got a torque converter. But it's also got clutches between gearsets like a manual. It's how they squeezed 9 speeds into a tiny space. The electronics control the timing to do the gear changes and lock the clutches. There's many things they could tweak in software to reduce a wear or stress problems. Many of which, you'd not be able to see or measure from it's performance.

I thought they all had some form of clutch device to engage and disengage the gears. When my older Golf auto went wrong they told me the friction belts that engaged the gears had worn, and equated this to worn clutches. I also thought all the current autos were controlled electronically. However I am ready to be educated because I have never looked inside an auto box.

How long have they been making auto boxes ???
Got me thinking about the history of auto boxes and googling brought up this article which helped to fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge.

Mine requires the update, just confirmed this morning. Now booked in for 13th December at the Fiat Pro. Bristol.

surely after any softwear chaanges they need to ensure that it has been effectively changed and does what it is supposed to!

i.e. a check that all is well before handing it back to the customer.

but as i posted some time back; they wont tell you they will blag it!
I think that you are being rather naive, I think it is more of a case of waiting for the message "update complete" to appear on the computer, and that's it.

I think you guys are asking the wrong question to the Fiat Pro dealers. Of course they will not know what the software update is. They may however know what problem it’s solving and what’s been failing to create the need for this update? I’d ask that question! 😇

Yup checked this morning and mine needs the update

You can consider it naive if you like,
I have an engineering background with a history of implementing stuff like this.

“ update complete” is just an indication that the relevant ecu has accepted the change.

Could be worse -

Mercedes - panzers and plane engines
VW - peoples car and panzers
BMW - fighter planes
MAN - armoured vehicles
Porsche - panzers

Mitisbushi - many fighter planes

Oh and Hugo Boss - SS uniforms…
AEG - Crematorium

Sure you can see if your van has a recall on fiat camper?

Yes here is mine from the home page.

Just contacted Jordan’s in Hull they confirmed the recall on my 23 Fiat auto booked in on Thursday takes about 1 hour.
I’ve just been in to Jordan’s, Hull to ask if my 2021 Fiat ducato 140hp is due a recall and they didn’t have a clue what I was asking about?
I mentioned your post and that you are booked in next week, still a blank look!
He got my van up on the system and there are no active recalls on it so that’s reassuring for me anyway.

It’s only the series 8 with the 2.2 engine and 160 or 180 bhp 👍 what engine is yours although 140bhp not subject to the recall. Let you know what happens tomorrow after my visit.

Ha, he was talking about people not ecus.. people take short cuts
(fellow engineer speaking)

Land Rover push 200bhp and 430Nm through the same box with the D200 engine spec. Or 300bhp and 400Nm with the P300e. And it's been around for quite a few years now. It sounds like something relatively minor is causing longevity issues that they can fix with behaviour tweaks.
But there’s a bit of a difference between 2.5t and 4t+?

Not Fiat related but a close friend runs a large recovery company. I was out with him last night and mentioned this topic, he said that he has not recovered any Fiats recently with gearbox issues, BUT he did point to the fact that he has been busy recovering Sprinters with the latest auto boxes???

Well glad I joined now. My 2023 Fiat Auto also needs the model. Problem is we live in Kent and have to go to Brentford in London to get the fix.
It seems like Fiat Professional in Canterbury no longer do Motorhomes.
Looking forward to the M25 car park.

Here we go again! what is it with Fiat and transmissions? We've had the failing 5th gear, Juddergate, comfortmatic and now this.

I might be wrong but I had the impression that the 9 speed ZF had early problems when it was fitted to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Assuming it to be the same autobox, I thought that Fiat were being a bit optimistic about fitting this ZF to the heavier Ducato. In any event the ATF could be reaching high temperatures, needing frequent changes even between services, not merely topping-up.

As a ComfortMatic user, I'm crossing my fingers it stays trouble-free.

Mines a 2022,160HP (118KW), 2.2, 9sp Auto
Rang dealer ( Nuneaton) and they completely aware of it and booked it in next week.

Software Interface Update ??

30 minutes max I'm told.
