Fiat 9 speed auto recall notice issued

Volvo use Aisin gearboxes in cars, ot sure about trucks..
Volvo car and Volvo truck are completely separate companies. Volvo truck have their own I shift gearbox which s generally seen as the best "auto" gearbox in trucks, although there are also diehard Scania and Allison fans.

Like i said. Not sure about trucks….

I have e mailed fiat professional customer services to see what I can find out . We have not had a recall as of yet but equally are in the process of buying a series 9 with the 9 speed box . We could wait and get a series 10 with the new 8 speed box but at the moment we don’t really know much about the series 10 or how good the 8 speed auto will be . Anyone got any further info please ?

The article is this month Nov 2024, it only mentions Series 8 Ducatos, so hopefully the Series 9 is OK.
I think they’re saying if you’re not happy, they will lob a comfortmatic in for a couple of grand under warranty🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Is there a definitive list anywhere that matches model years to Ducato series numbers anywhere?

I've got a 2020 Ducato with a 2.3L engine and a 9 speed automatic gear box and am trying to work out what Series this is. Is it Series 7?
Is the next model the 8 speed 2.2L Series 8, from about 2022?

2.3 is not affected, just the new 2.2 engine.

Some of the background information given doesn’t sound quite right. They say the problem is confined to Series 8 because the new Series 9 uses an 8 speed transmission. However several of us already have Series 9 Ducatos with 9 speed boxes, my understanding is that the new model is the Series 10 and that is the one coming with the 8 speed boxes. This leaves the status of the Series 9 models open to question. I have one of the Series 9 2.2litre 140BHP engines which don’t appear to be affected but it would still be reassuring to know exactly what is causing a problem that can be cured by simple reprogramming. My amateur guess is that the more powerful engines are changing gear at the peak of the power curve/revs and are putting a strain on the belts that engage and disengage the gears and the point at which they change gear needs tweaking.
My question is how do you lot know which is the series 8 or series 9? I know I have an series 8 (manufactured in August 2022) because it came with the big interior restyling but I don't know how to tell it from a series 9?

#21 here may help. Small differences.

Ah now I thought the series 9 had the interior restyle ?. I am even more confused now 🤷🏻‍♂️

Imagine if you bought any other vehicle promising BHP and torque figures and then a year later ( via electronic down / update ) the vehicle had less BHP and torque figures ? That surely would constitute breach of consumer law ?

Agreed, I have the series 8 160 and although of course I would have the software update, however I would be disappointed if the performance was throttled back and it was noticeable

Is that what the fix is?

I don’t know but if the previous 180 didn’t stress the gearbox, simply reducing the BHP of the current one seems unlikely to be the answer. For now I will stick with my amateur guess (see #26) that it might be about how the gear changes are managed. I can’t see Fiat wanting to do anything to the power or torque figures that would leave them open to legal challenges. However perhaps they could reduce the stresses on the gearbox by temporarily reducing the power and torque during gear changes which is the most likely time for damage to occur.

I can’t see the possibility of loosing power on a gear change a very attractive proposition especially in an overtake manoeuvre for example .

Hopefully it won’t be anything particularly noticeable but when you have yours done on December 3 you could ask them what the fix does.

Edit.
p.s. I am only guessing and know no more than anyone else.

Sorry , just checked my e mails and this is the reply from FP re the electronic upgrade when I asked what the update does ….

I honestly couldn’t say, the recall only tells us we update the module software for the transmission control module and the engine control module. They don’t tell us what the modifications are specifically.
Sorry I don’t have any more information.

It could be anything. It might be the software opens valves or actuates clutches and does itself damage in certain circumstances. It might be related to cooling circulation. It could even be how the traction control interacts with the gear changes. We may never know.

Anyone know if the vehicle recall check on the gov.uk website
( here) is reliable? If it is, you only need your reg no.

I think the Gov site shows the safety recalls they are involved in. This one sounds like a Fiat recall because of maintenance concerns i.e. they don’t like the warranty claims that are building up.

FWD Range Rovers ? thought they were 4wd
The Evoque, Discovery Sport and E-Pace have a transverse inline 4 cylinder engine with the ZF 9 speed on the end. Same configuration and same gearbox as a Ducato. Except they often have a transfer case to also drive the rear wheels.

All the other ICE JLR cars have a longitudinal engine with the ZF 8 speed.
