Fiat 9 speed auto recall notice issued

Looking at that German article it seems that the suspicion is that it is an issue of the ZF in combination with more heavier vehicles, insofar as these (especially with the 2.2 180bhp engine) are overly represented in failures. They note that heavier motorhomes are more likely to be automatic and on the 180 engine so are hypothesising based on that.

I rang Fiat Professional in Norwich this morning and sure enough, there’s a Fiat recall for a software update so it’s booked in for 2nd Dec.

Our van is a Series 8 (I think!) 180HP Auto 6.36m.

Looking at when others have theirs booked in, I may be the first to have it done so I’ll give my thoughts here as soon as I pick it up…

Likewise mine is in Thursday 21st Nov so will see how it drives on the return journey of 35 miles it’s a while you wait appointment 👍

So I called my local dealer and mine is listed so booked in for December.

He says nothing to worry about just a software update but as we are going to Spain January thought best to get done.
I'd better give A&M a call.

Nothing on here for mine?

There was nothing on there for mine either but Fiat Professional had a recall for it on their systems.

As has been said above, I think the .Gov website only shows safety related recalls.

They are not affected only the new 2.2l.
Yes thanks. I I knew that, but it seems like the fault in the gearbox is to do with the way the gearbox reacts with the power of the engine so upping the power might have an adverse effect and caused the gearbox to malfunction

It doesn’t look like they know what the problem is but the gearbox is the weak link on some combination with versions of engine and power

Land Rover push 200bhp and 430Nm through the same box with the D200 engine spec. Or 300bhp and 400Nm with the P300e. And it's been around for quite a few years now. It sounds like something relatively minor is causing longevity issues that they can fix with behaviour tweaks.

Reading the 'This has to be the mother of all broken down in Europe stories' thread isn't very reassuring for 9 speed auto owners . 5 weeks old Burstner with 2,200 miles on the clock breaks down with faulty gearbox. Garage carries out a software update and it breaks down again after 65 miles . Clearly there is a major problem with this gearbox hence the change to 8 speed .

As a quoted owner of said vehicle with the 9 speed box and 180bhp engine ( and booked in for the software update on 03/12 . ) I will be monitoring the situation closely with a mind to taking legal advise if the base vehicle proves “ not fit for purpose “ .
If the BHP or torque figures are adversely affected / effected these will influence my future actions .

How will you know?

We had an ECU update on 8 November when it went in for 2 year service - series 8 160 bhp. Don’t know if it was this recall but in ~200 miles since only change noticed is it pulls up inclines/hills better.
I await my calling…

If mine pulls any better than it does, i will say wow….it is so light and day better than our previous 2.3 comfortmatic or pre-previous 2.8jtd manual

I was under the impression that the change to the 8 speed was cus its cheaper, so financially driven decision, not performance…

But who knows what they know?

If ours pulls any better on hills we’ll have to prepare for lift off.

If the alteration is purely done via a gearbox remap I can only imagine they will adjust where in the engine’s torque curve the gear change happens.
Or it might change less aggressively. Or do the opposite to reduce slip time. Or engage the lock sooner. Or change the timing in the solenoid interlocks. Or it might be just to change behaviour in a rare edge case situation that they didn't originally think of... There's dozens of things they could change.
