Fiat 9 speed auto recall notice issued

Don't think there's been that many failures on here has there?

My view is they would have spoken with ZF and agreed what changes needed so stupid not to do it as it obviously fixes something.
Just trying to reconcile 10tenmen ’s driving experiences when compared with a recent drive of a new 2.2/180 empty 4.25T which nicely slipped into 9th once 60-62mph was reached on a flattish dual carriageway. It’s good for him in reaching 9th at a similar lower speed but doesn’t (yet) make complete sense to me.

IIRC there have been a number of failures (or at least limp mode / stranding issues) discussed on here - mostly attributed to assumed insufficient oil levels from factory, however whether the two issues are linked or separate is not yet clear to me.

But if he's accelerating to 70 it won't change up, if he got to 60ish then lifted foot a bit it would change.

Early issues were about under filled boxes?

You're perfectly correct. I was looking at Merc drawings - 'cos I have one. 🙂

Interestingly, that article talks about the Aisin 8-speed being smoother to shift because it doesn't have dog clutches... Isn't the new 8 speed an Aisin?

Out of interest, how are people knowing what gear you are in? Does the fiat have a gear indicator? I have a Merc base with 9 speed , but not sure I have ever got into 9th as no indicator.

Sorry, I might have got confused with the other concerning Fiat recent (last couple of years) failures that were to do with engine oil levels insufficiently filled at factory.

Suggests overall QC at the engine/transmission assembly factory is a bit of a concern. As to ZF’s QC also concerning as IIRC Ducatos have been using this transmission in >3.5T GMW motorhomes esp Carthago and Malibu for a number of years now, especially given the designed torque rating is up to 480Nm out of the factory (180 2.2 is 450Nm as you probably already know).

Well glad I joined now. My 2023 Fiat Auto also needs the model. Problem is we live in Kent and have to go to Brentford in London to get the fix.
It seems like Fiat Professional in Canterbury no longer do Motorhomes.
Looking forward to the M25 car park.
try htc at dartford

It was gearbox oil not engine.

Wouldn't put me off after driving one😉
It was a great drive (at least as good as my current Ford 170/405 AT6spd 3.85T GMW) for a higher GMW van. Just hoping for similar cab reliability as would rather not be stranded 900 miles away in south of France 😀. Fingers crossed then and hope the warranty is ‘bomb proof’! 😆

I assume you’ve had no reliability issues with your Carthago - is it 2.2 160/180 ZF9HP?

Just waded through that article the only similarity I could find with the box in the Ducato is that 1st & 2nd are quite high and wide spaced apart from it that sounded nothing like box behaves in my van. The changes are seemless.

That’s good to hear.

Did Jordan’s explain what functional/physical effect(s) the software update should bring and the reasons for not applying it before/at the factory (to the 2.2 in 160/180 variants)?

As with others here, looking to understand/assess whether this ‘fix’ will likely improve/address the longer-term reliability from failure that others on the Forum with the ZF9HP transmission have experienced and recent Fiat ‘recall’ notice/letter. TIA.

I’m afraid they didn’t know any details apart from new software. They also said they were unaware of any issues in respect of the series 8 👍

My van hardly ever went into 9th gear even when cruising at 65-70 with cruise activated.
So this looks like an improvement in mine. It appears most people got into top gear easily.

Ours is often in 9th on the flat.
Hi Lenny, I’m wondering if the people who have had failures had a box like mine. I can honestly say it’s only gone into 9th on fewer than handful of occasions.

Having just ordered a series 9 on 140 hp auto should I be worried? I know it says 160/180hp but heavier van. We are looking at up plating to 4000kg so a heavier van but on 140 hp.

If going to 4000kg why didn't you go for the 180?

Friend who's box failed was one of the under filled ones.

I have put a deposit on a dealer order, if it was my choice I would definitely go for the 180. I did question this on a previous post. I was told 140 ponies was enough

My understanding is the series 9 is not affected nor 140bhp on the series 8.

Reading between the lines the 160 & 180 are affected due to being mainly optioned to heavier vans.It sounds as if they are applying a numbers approach, as in the 160&180 are more susceptible to failures due to being optioned to heavier vehicle.I could however have read the information wrong. There is no clear fault indication at the moment that fiat are willing to explain.

The Series 9 has the 2.2l engine and 180bhp is an option. The article that says the Series 9 will have the 8 speed box is wrong, the 8 speed box is coming on the Series 10.
I’m presuming the series 9 has been supplied with this update.
My understanding is the series 9 got the electrical updates such as blind spot mirrors, auto lights and wipers.
