Tam & co the great winter escape

The one thing that does irritate me.

Why mechanics no longer clean up after themselves. Fortunately he wasn't inside the van as I did all the lights wipers horn etc for him so no mucky overalls on my seats or dirty boots...but he has left big oily paw prints on my freshly polished and waxed bonnet

I was pleased with the 6month delay due to Covid as it meant all our vehicles are now October MOT's
Because I do most of my own maintenance and tend to do a long trip over winter I generally prefer a fair weather mot time so normally August September suits me.

OK guys talk to me about alarms ...probably too.late for me getting one fitted at the minute but I was looking in to them for when I get back . I'd like all doors and accessible lockers covered. I phoned a local mobile fitter and to be honest he sounds lazy and pricey.

Started straight away that accessing wires on an a class is difficult and that means wireless sensors everywhere which are £50 each so for basic alarm he quotes £580 then 6 additional wireless sensors another £300

My hymer had a cobra system on it that covered all lockers , motion sensors I could deactivate when inside etc and I don't think it was anywhere near that price.

So just for comparison sake what have you got fitted and how much did it cost roughly.

I don't grudge a quality system if it's tried and tested but not even heard of the name he mentioned.

I can’t fault the Vanbitz strike back system.
But you can only get it fitted in Taunton.
Maybe a detour needed
Plus funster discount

Aye I've heard a lot about those but I reckon it might be out my price range ...and of course its the other end of the country.

I think Sandra irnbru had an alarm fitted a couple of years ago and did quite a bit of research/comparison beforehand. Called something like "Outsmart the Thief" or similar.

Search her threads abt 2 yrs ago?

We have had Autowatch on last 3 vans.
Last one fitted 5 years ago, cash job £400 would have been about £550 but I'd recommended loads of people to him.
Hab door, drivers door, bonnet, 3 lockers & ultra sonic internal sensors.

If you don't need it for insurance the bits will cost about 200 quid or less and fit it yourself.

We have a Phantom Sentinel alarm/tracker fitted and have been very pleased with it.
Prices are on their website but you will need to add the annual subscription for the tracker and the addition cost of any extra door sensors.
We also had sensors fitted to all windows (not included in the standard cost) and from memory these were an additional £35 each.
If the alarm is activated you will immediately receive a text. If you don't reply with your pin number, Phantom will then phone you.

I think Vanbitz is in the same price range... as is OTT [Outsmart The Thief]
Depends on how much protection you need/want.
Do you want a deterrent from breaking in, or to stop the van, your home, being driven away?

We also had an Autowatch on our previous motorhome.
It was fairly basic but worked well.

See that's a lot cheaper than the £880 he's quoting. And sounds similar to the system I had on the hymer.

I basically want a deterrent from breaking in . The one I had a quote for doesn't stop it from being driven away unfortunately. But I think his price is very high for what it offers.

Basic system should include hab&drivers door, bonnet & internal sensor just the lockers extra at £40 to £50 a time.

Just fit some flashing LED's if all you want is a deterrent .

Aye but he started straight away about a class being more complicated blah blah and would need wireless sensors on front doors . I got the impression he wants easy jobs. The front doors have the same courtesy switches as a standard ducato so not sure why it's a problem. I then have 4 lockers big enough for a person to enter that would give access to the inside thar I'd like covered. Plus the hab door. Interior sensors that I can disarm when inside but still arms the doors etc. And an immobiliser would also be good.

We used this guy they fitted the autowatch,
That's the same company I spoke to this morning. Didn't think it was autowatch he mentioned though but it's the same mobile number.

So I'm curious how much your system cost

I'd like more of a deterrent than that lol . If you opened any door or hatch on my hymer it went ballistic.

I maybe left it a little late thinking about this ....but my concern is 2 months in Ireland lol.

I can and do disable the van so it can't be driven away without time and good mechanical knowledge but there is the worry of being broken in to. Although it seems to have survived the last 16 years

Where on earth are you thinking of going in Ireland?
The paces we wilded I'd have been happy to leave the van unlocked.

I've never been so no idea yet. It just seems to be a common thought that do what they likeys are responsible for many motorhome thefts ...and well many of those are Irish. I may be worrying about nothing .

Anyway it's too late to get one fitted now anyway as if the car sells tonight or tomorrow I will be heading off on Saturday morning.

On the point of subscription for a tracker does it cover all Europe a) for monitoring the unit and b) for calling you with notification?

You are spot on. You pass the memory test with flying colours.(y) think it was around £800 with years subscription.

6. Coverage

Your system is effective in mainland UK, Northern and Southern Ireland and across Europe. Our Phantom units use a roaming network provider but our systems are still limited by network coverage available.

This enables our tracking units to roam onto any network as required, giving us the best coverage possible (both in the UK and Europe). There is always the possibility that from time to time you may find your vehicle in an area of poor coverage.

We cannot be held liable for this occurrence. It is unusual and is unlikely to affect our ability to recover your vehicle should it be stolen.

Looks like 5.-800 is around the going rate then for full protection.

If when I'm back next spring I've decided to keep this van then I'll splash out on a system for it.

I'll second phantom. I believe there is a mobile fitting service.

Problem with alarm systems are they are only any deterrent if there are other people (who care) in the immediate area.
