MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Mind he doesn't lock her in
He managed to lock himself in the car once! He'd got in the back to fit a dog guard using cable ties to the back of the front seats, it was cold so he'd shut the doors, trouble was that it had child locks on so he couldn't open the doors and didn't have anything to cut the cable ties ... fortunately he did have his phone so was able to ring me otherwise he could've been in there for hours!

I locked myself in the back of my works van once when I worked as a courier. I'd stopped in Cowdenbeath High Street to make a delivery . Left the engine running jumped in the back door and the wind blew the door shut . Couldn't get out lol and it had a bulkhead I was in there ages banging on the side shouting for help. It was a traffic warden that finally let me out lol. He was about to give me a ticket when he heard the banging.

Funny enough that was an old mk2 iveco daily too .

Well done for fixing the problem. So the alternator is OK - phew!

So you are in Kranidi. My old boat is ashore there in a boatyard. There are two boatyards on the edge of Kilada village.

It is now owned by my good friend Alwin and it would be nice if you have time to take a photo.

There are two boatyards next to each other. The boat 'RUAWATA' is in the LH yard with the blue boat lift, and is on the left inside the yard at the back. I have spoken to Alwin just now, so if anyone asks why you are there just tell them you have the permission of the owner, Alwin Davison, to take some photos.

The boat has been to the bay before when I sailed her there many eons ago.

It would be nice if you can find time to get the photos.

Thanks in advance.

Geoff

[EDIT I forgot to say you are lucky that the belt problem happened in Kranidi as it is the engineering and spares centre for quite a large area around. If you want an auto-electricaian to attend to that dodgy cable it might be best to find one there - there is at least one which I used coming up from the Porto Helli side but 30+years ago and I cannot remember exactly. The boatyard may be able to point you in the right direction or they probably have a cable and crimping tool to fit. Good luck]
I've just drive through kalida to my wee parking spot past the harbour to the wee church , I have to say there's a lot of feckn boats in kalida but I'll have a look in the morning and see if I can find it . I only saw one boat lift a big blue and yellow one with lefkas written on it. But looking from the road that was the furthest to the right . There's yards on the water edge and on the other side of the road.

Lotta boats

So here's the day

This morning we hiked from our parking spot on the beach 3.5 miles along the coast to the prehistoric cave of franchthi. A sunny day but definitely colder than I've been used to , I've had to ditch the shorts and back to long trousers.

We then walked the 3.5 miles back , dogs were knackered so they had a sleep while I played with the drone, it was a short flight as incredibly windy I kept losing signal but this is the abandoned hotel complex, can't go inside it with the dogs as there's broken glass everywhere so I just opted for some ariel shots of it .

Then after lunch I drove up to the sinkholes at didyma and we had a walk around the main one .... the Greeks will build churches anywhere lol , and then up to the other one in the side of the hill. Got chatting to a German couple there who now live in Spain but also here in there camper.

After that we drove down to kranidi , brief stop at the bakers for some baklava and a frappe then on to kalida, found a parkup at the end of a bumpy dirt track near yet another wee Chapel.

Staying here tonight. Sheltered from the wind and nice and quiet. I'm actually directly opposite the franchthi cave on the other side of the gulf ..

A healthy and light tea tonight , guacamole and cherry Tom's on some wheat bread toast and some Greek farmers salad on lettuce leaves.

Lovely .

We've walked a total of 10 miles today but seen a lot. There's a self service launderette in town so I'm going to do some laundry in the morning and have a wander round the town. Probably go to porto chelli after that.

I've just had a small tub of guacamole mashed into blue cheese then spread on wholemeal toast, yours looks good I will try it with tomatoes (y)

What’s the story with the abandoned hotel.
Religion killed it

Was originally planned to be a hotel for nudists but the church objected. Abandoned about 20 years ago I think .

There's a lot about it on Google

But this is one travellers blog with lots of photos

Well that was fun nicholsong you owe me a pint when I get to Poland lol. There's 163 boats in that yard and almost as many dogs ... the racket all the dogs were making was ridiculous. I asked quite a few guys where this boat was but no one knew ,kept asking what type of boat it was and I didn't know . Anyway I eventually went in to the office and they pointed me in the right direction so here it is Ruawata fae Portsmouth

Best pics I could get as it's well packed in and up on stilts .

Interesting name on your old boat nicholsong.
It looks Maori. Rua means “a pit for storing fruit and vegetables“ and whata means “shelf”.
Would that be right?

The previous/original owner's wife was from NZ. She may have come from a place of that name. I got a librarian friend in Auckland to research the name and you are right about the 'Rua' bit, but I now cannot remember what she found about 'whata'.

As you probably know the 'wh' is pronounced like an 'f'.

Great Job Tam, many thanks.

You will get more than a beer when you come to Poland - remember we have a big yard with EHU, water and dump for grey and black waste.

I hope it is a distortion of the camera angle that makes it look as though the cradle supporting the boat on the right in the last pic has partly collapsed and that the boat is leaning on 'Ruawhata's port gunwhale. Please assure me it is not, before I forward the pics to the new owner.

Thanks again

Geoff
