MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Why do breakdowns always happen at weekends too and when the weather is shit . Its blowing a gale today , van is rocking and it's raining off and on so not a day for crawling under a camper.

I have a spare belt...although the part numbers of the spare I have and the one that was fitted are different yet they are both gates belts so one of them can't be right surely.

Fortunately my leisure battery is fully charged so the ablemail should keep my starter battery topped up for now so I can start the van.

I wonder if the belt was not correct and it was digging in the v-pulley on the alternator and that was the noise then it wore that part so in reality it wasn’t turning the alternator sufficiently..🤔

Anyway I know what I mean…😆😂

I know what you mean , if the belt profile is wrong instead of the drive being transmitted thru the shoulders it runs too deep and tries to drive on the flat of the belt at the bottom :)

That belt does look a bit old ? I reckon the garage ordered in a new belt, but got the wrong one, so refitted the old one ?

To be honest it looks old but I think its just been roasted , probably slipping when under load as both sides of it are shiny and brittle , if you bend it back on itself there's cracks between every tooth. But I had the cambelt done the week before I left home so that was when they fitted a new alternator belt.

That’s an old belt, a new one has got to take some serious abuse to go in such a short period….

You would think so ... but I don't know

I know what you mean.

But that's why I'm confused, if the belt was new and not adjusted correctly it would cause the squealing ... but

When iveco fitted the new alternator in Italy you would think they'd have mentioned and replaced the belt if it looked old and worn then .

But it squeaked even after they'd replaced the alternator so I assumed they'd not adjusted it properly too.

But you wouldn't think a loose belt would snap either.

So I'm a little confused by the whole sorry nightmare.

It wasn't charging yesterday even before the belt has snapped today. So it's not just one problem. Can't do or check anything now though till I fit the new belt . Which to do that I need the van jacked up pretty high so I can get my arse under it.

Its annoying as hell because if I'd been in the UK and the first problem had happened I'd have replaced alternator and all the cables at the same time for a fraction of the cost I've already spent on the alternator in Italy.

Still not even sure the original alternator was faulty.

But the garage prices are killing me ,

That gates 6217mc is a 10mm x 925 , whats the spare belt as some iveco dailys list a 6214mc 10mm x 850 ?

The spare belt I have here is a 6266mc
10mm by 960
Which I'm hoping was an actual spare and not one the previous owner bought in error and just told me it was a spare as then I'm buggered till I get to a garage.

If the weather would give me a break I could jack the van up and try to change the belt and check the positive feed lead from the alternator to the battery as it doesn't look great. I wanted to run a jump lead from that to see if it solved the charging problem then I'd know it was that lead at fault.

Access is my biggest problem

Don’t take any risks to save a few pounds Tam , I never find myself under a jacked up car, let alone a motorhome , to many freak accidents, surely some backstreet garage in Greece could sort this for a few of your finest Scottish pounds😇😎

Tam, as you head further North, consider a visit to Ancient Corinth. There is also a campsite (same name) within walking distance that is quite good.

There’s also the Theatre of Epidavros worth a detour further west near the coast, plus a good harbour side stopover at the village of the same name.

Not forgetting Mycenae and the Treasury of Atreus back on the main route to Corinth from Nafplio.

Don't understand why all you's lot have such bad time with German people! We've met nothing but friendly people and are always amazed how they are happy to switch to speaking outstanding English for our benefit. We even keep in contact via WhatsApp with several German friends we made during the pandemic. Is it a case of reap what you sow perhaps 😉

We have also met some lovely Germans on our travels, the last couple we keep in contact with and meet up when we are on our in Spain.

But last year in Benidorm we were pitched near three Belguim motorhomes, who completEly blanked us the whole time we were there. I thought that very odd, because I have always found Belgium’s very friendly.
But after talking to an Irish guy opposite ,and a two or three other English people, these particular Belgium’s didn’t want to speak to anyone.

We too have always found the Germans very friendly and have made a few lasting friends who we keep in touch, come to think of it, it’s only Germans who will be friendly, quite often over a drink they bring out of their motorhomes (usually Concordes and Morelos strangely) in Rothenburg a couple who was on their way home from the Morelo Party was plying us with shots and beer, we’d only parked up on the aire 10 mins, so hello Ringo and Manuela

Managed to jack the van up a bit to get under....but I can't bloody change the belt. It doesn't just drive the alternator it also drives the fan and there's no way to get the belt over the fan without removing it ... and to remove that I'd have to drop the radiator. None of which I can do by the side of the road. So it looks like I'm at the mercy of a garage yet again.

I think this van is lazy and it got used to sitting around doing nothing. I don't think it likes being part of our family so if it doesn't start behaving itself it will be getting sold after all because its really pissing me off. I've spent more money on repairing and improving this van in 6 months than I've ever spent on any of the previous vans .

And replacing the fan belt isn't going to fix the charging problem so I've still got that to figure out .

But this positive lead from alternator looks dodgy

You can see the kind of access im dealing with. Its a bleeding pain

Sometimes if there’s room you can Manoeuvre the belt between the blades and slot it on🤞🤞
Aye but it's not looking too easy on this can't get bleeding hands in to the thing

Honestly an a class on this chassis is a joke ... can't even fill the expansion tank or windscreen washers without a 2 foot hose and a large funnel . It's ridiculous

It's an old van Tam, like mine...all fixable...no limp mode, adblu, comfortmatic. ..

If you loop the belt over one blade then keep pulling it round it should go on.
Yeah that works ....just .

Still have issues getting to the alternator adjustment bolts etc . I'll have to wait till tomorrow now . I've about 45 minutes of daylight left here and I think I'll have to try putting it up on a kerb or something to get more access ... I'm struggling to get under the bugger

Barclaybasher aye I know vic it's just frustrating me just now.

It's a good old van when it feckin behaves. I just hate being at the mercy of garages and the prices their charging.

I thought the UK garages were bad but ridiculous the prices I've had to pay for repairs on this trip .
£500 for an alternator and £400 for a wheel bearing replacement is ludicrous on a van this age

Sometimes Tam you just have to suck up garages and there costs if you can’t do it yourself. If it means you getting on the road with your trip the let the garage do it, you have the money and will spend more time being stressed about it if you try and do it yourself by the road side. None of us like garage costs but some of don’t have any choice. I have just payed out for a service, mot, complete new clutch on mine costing £2700. I don’t like paying that but have no choice. Get it in the garage and enjoy your trip. 👍

Ach I'll have a go at it myself in the morning if I can get enough clearance under it. I prefer to use a garage as a last resort if I can. If I can get the belt fitted I can at least then check if the alternator is still working and I can run a jump lead from the alternator to battery etc to see if it's just the leads at fault. I can do these things myself if I can get enough room under the van ... nothing is accessible from above that's half the problem

I've already spent nearly 500 quid on that bloody fault ... and no further forward. I'm still convinced there was nothing wrong with the old alternator too.

And I've had the squeaking fan belt again the last few mornings too .. normally just the first 5 minutes or so then it stops. But either no one can adjust a fan belt correctly or that's just a common fault on this.
Squealing belt may be due to the fact that a previous owner ran it for an extended period with a loose belt and it has worn the pulley. It happened to my brother on an Astra

Take care with that. I know youve done it hundreds of times before but be careful. They always used to say that if your fan belt fails, use an old pair of tights as a temporary solution, but that was in the days of dynamos and water pumps. I once suggested it to a member of the fairer sex,she declined and,for some reason our courting days were over! :ROFLMAO:

I thought modern vans had electric fans?
