MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Maybe . My footbrake etc does seem to be working OK if a little soft . But there's no hydraulics inside the drum on this so it shouldn't really affect them. But it could be getting a bit hot
You are getting paranoid

Arrrrrrggggghhhhhh

Bloody van. It's always always a weekend things go wrong , alternator last Sunday and now rear handbrake shoes.

OK in fairness this was a job I planned to have done because the garage who repaired the leaking hub seal wheel bearing for its mot put new brake shoes on the n/s but didn't fit them on the o/s rear. I have the shoes with me.

There's always been a bit of a rumble on this van from the rear but the engine is so bloody noisy it's hard to pinpoint what the noise was. I figured it could be the propshaft bearing , the rear diff being a bit worn , the o/s wheel bearing perhaps on its way out or indeed the shoes inside the drum scuffing. But as that side was all fine at mot in August I figured it was something I'd get looked at in Turkey. The whole rear hub has to come off to remove the drum on this and it's a 63mm socket and a 6 foot bar required to do it. ... neither of which I posses. A few days ago the noise did seem a little louder but I had other things more pressing to deal with. This morning however there's been a few bangs and a bit grinding coming from there.

This van is like the fiat's etc it has pads fir the main service brake and shoes for the parking handbrake. There's no hydraulics inside the drum its all mechanical. So I expect either a spring has broken or come off and the shoe has moved. It's a bit of a nightmare as it's obviously loose enough to jam the wheel.. if you rotate it forward it goes free enough till you then try to turn it backwards at which point it Jams.... and the Same the other way.

No garages open here on a Saturday everything closed till Monday. Its one thing I dislike about Europe. At least in the UK you have the likes of kwik fit , national tyres etc all open on weekends .

So I have no option really other than to just Hope it doesn't jam completely between here and the ferry and on the other side till I try and get to a garage on Monday.

To change my ferry at this late would cost me and I'd still have to find a garage here on Monday so it wouldn't be any quicker.

Is it safe ? Well no its bloody not , I still have brakes etc because it's the handbrake that's faulty. But I'm obviously worried incase it really Jams while driving and locks up the wheel.

Bloody nightmare

Sounds like a broken spring to me, had a similar noise on a mk1 Cavalier years ago.

Yes thats my first thought. But the shoes are most likely very old so possibly the lining has come off. I have new shoes here so I'll get those fitted I think. I'll also get the bearing checked just to make sure while it's stripped down.

It seems to be , although on this van I did try to get the main bits sorted before I left to try and prevent breakdowns but you never win lol.
It's an Iveco not a Fiat - Fix It Again Tommorow :giggle:
Anyone got a phrase for IVECO?

Definitely a slipped pad tam, you have the pads so that’s ok but be prepared for a new disk…

I hope not as its a big fecking drum with disc attached. It's only for handbrake so it shouldn't matter too much if it's scored inside etc . The disc surface is actually good. I'm hoping I can get away with just replacing the shoes on that side and new springs . Fingers crossed 🤞

in anal glands? Its a possibility. But she has never liked anyone going near her bum. It's another reason I hold off taking her to the vet as it's a traumatic experience for her. She usually ends up climbing up my arm to my neck to try getting away. Tail is jammed right down over her bum and she will not let you lift it. Vets going to have a job even examining her to be honest
Tam my fella weighs about 10kg but he’s all muscle and really strong and powerful but he hates Vets and me if l try to attend to any problem, same Vet all his life its a nightmare particularly at a strange Vet trying to get the Passport sorted on return to U.K.
However, we have been prescribed a calming drug to administer prior to our visit, we give him it crushed in a spoonful of Bio Yogurt and bang on 45 minutes he’s just about standing, manouvering but controllable, don’t judged it for his own good it’s impossible without the tablet.
Jade might well benefit from this you could spread to the Vet prior to obtain a tablet administer and 45 minutes later Jade could be examined without all the anguish.
l can get the name of the drug and PM you if you wish.
Brian.

Had a look around Alberobello this morning , its certainly a different little town , again very quiet although they are decorating it just now for Christmas and there's a market being assembled. Think it would be nice with all the lights on.

Then left there and popped in to a service point to drain grey and black waste. Then on to mola de bari and to a launderette to do my washing.

The electrics all seem fine now thankfully but the next installments of Tam's breakdowns is not far away as I'm having a few issues now with rear brakes. But I need to investigate that further. I had planned to have the rhs rear looked at anyway as I get a rumbling when driving and that side hasn't been stripped down before. The other side had a new bearing and handbrake shoes done for its mot but the lazy garage didn't fit the shoes on the other side. It's been rumbling away all the journey but this morning I've had a few cracks/bangs from the rear when braking and pulling away so I think I have something binding/sticking. If I find a quiet carpark after my laundry is done I'll jack up that wheel and see if I can feel anything.

So here's the pics of Alberobello

I do hope so mate….🤞🏼

One thing I picked up from the battery problems was a suggestion that you earth the engine. If you had done so the problem would have been diagnosed at that time. Your reply was that you couldn't get to the earth connection as it was underneath the van. However what was meant by the suggestion was to use a jump lead from a shiny part of the engine to the battery negative.

Jade - it sounds as though she might have strained her tail.

Yep and there wasn't any accessible shiny bits of engine either unfortunately. There's not a lot of access under this bonnet .

I'm not sure if it's her tail or something else. She's the most difficult out the 3 dogs to check her for problems she just grumps or squeals . She's always been highly strung for a dog lol.
