MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Had a look around Alberobello this morning , its certainly a different little town , again very quiet although they are decorating it just now for Christmas and there's a market being assembled. Think it would be nice with all the lights on.

Then left there and popped in to a service point to drain grey and black waste. Then on to mola de bari and to a launderette to do my washing.

The electrics all seem fine now thankfully but the next installments of Tam's breakdowns is not far away as I'm having a few issues now with rear brakes. But I need to investigate that further. I had planned to have the rhs rear looked at anyway as I get a rumbling when driving and that side hasn't been stripped down before. The other side had a new bearing and handbrake shoes done for its mot but the lazy garage didn't fit the shoes on the other side. It's been rumbling away all the journey but this morning I've had a few cracks/bangs from the rear when braking and pulling away so I think I have something binding/sticking. If I find a quiet carpark after my laundry is done I'll jack up that wheel and see if I can feel anything.

So here's the pics of Alberobello

On my bucket list 👍

Once in Greece I'm going to take her to the vet to get checked out.
To be honest Tam I'd be taking her today rather than have her in pain for any longer.

I can't

If I take her to a vet and she had to stay in for anything or wait for results I don't have the time to wait. I'm on the ferry tomorrow. Once in Greece I can take her to a vet I've uses before that speaks English and I can wait if need be

Couldn't you rearrange your ferry?

Couldn't you rearrange your ferry?
No .

Whilst she may be in discomfort she's not in constant pain . She's eating fine , doing the toilet fine. She's not stressed or breathing fast panting etc , she's obviously pulled something or feeling a bit sore , probably from playing too rough . There's a good chance she will get well and recover on her own. With limber tail and things they just reccomen rest and keeping warm . If she was showing signs of being in constant pain etc then I'd have taken to the vets a few days ago but she isn't I want in to Greece ASAP and to an area I know etc. I wanted to be in Greece before the start of December ideally but that's when my ferry was available.

Great to hear your electrics are sorted Tam!

Thanks ever so much for posting all the lovely pics of Alberobello. We love it there, but it's over five years since our last visit.

Safe onward travels. (y)

Arrrrrrggggghhhhhh

Bloody van. It's always always a weekend things go wrong , alternator last Sunday and now rear handbrake shoes.

OK in fairness this was a job I planned to have done because the garage who repaired the leaking hub seal wheel bearing for its mot put new brake shoes on the n/s but didn't fit them on the o/s rear. I have the shoes with me.

There's always been a bit of a rumble on this van from the rear but the engine is so bloody noisy it's hard to pinpoint what the noise was. I figured it could be the propshaft bearing , the rear diff being a bit worn , the o/s wheel bearing perhaps on its way out or indeed the shoes inside the drum scuffing. But as that side was all fine at mot in August I figured it was something I'd get looked at in Turkey. The whole rear hub has to come off to remove the drum on this and it's a 63mm socket and a 6 foot bar required to do it. ... neither of which I posses. A few days ago the noise did seem a little louder but I had other things more pressing to deal with. This morning however there's been a few bangs and a bit grinding coming from there.

This van is like the fiat's etc it has pads fir the main service brake and shoes for the parking handbrake. There's no hydraulics inside the drum its all mechanical. So I expect either a spring has broken or come off and the shoe has moved. It's a bit of a nightmare as it's obviously loose enough to jam the wheel.. if you rotate it forward it goes free enough till you then try to turn it backwards at which point it Jams.... and the Same the other way.

No garages open here on a Saturday everything closed till Monday. Its one thing I dislike about Europe. At least in the UK you have the likes of kwik fit , national tyres etc all open on weekends .

So I have no option really other than to just Hope it doesn't jam completely between here and the ferry and on the other side till I try and get to a garage on Monday.

To change my ferry at this late would cost me and I'd still have to find a garage here on Monday so it wouldn't be any quicker.

Is it safe ? Well no its bloody not , I still have brakes etc because it's the handbrake that's faulty. But I'm obviously worried incase it really Jams while driving and locks up the wheel.

Bloody nightmare

Last year the rear brake shoes on my Moby disintegrated and locked up my offside rear wheel in Northern Spain.
I managed to free it, got to my destination and back to the UK before fixing it - by trying not to use the brakes and never the handbrake.
Once had to cool the wheel with a bucket of water

Yeah I'm guessing it's either the shoe has lost a lining or a spring has broken . Trying to avoid using the handbrake but thats not stopping it from grinding. The shoes shouldn't move at all with the footbrake as they're purely mechanical on this . I'm not far from bari .. just trying to find somewhere to park up for tonight that's not too far away from terminal .

Jade.. You don't think she might have impacted 'glands' do you ? mine did and was similar description, tail down, no energy etc.
As in anal glands? Its a possibility. But she has never liked anyone going near her bum. It's another reason I hold off taking her to the vet as it's a traumatic experience for her. She usually ends up climbing up my arm to my neck to try getting away. Tail is jammed right down over her bum and she will not let you lift it. Vets going to have a job even examining her to be honest. She's the worst out the 3 at the vets

My brakes were grinding and I was losing pressure on the footbrake for a while, didn't make sense, made descending winding mountain roads 'interesting', maybe the brake fluid boiled (?) but the problem was just the handbrake...

I've managed to make it to the outskirts of bari ... it grinds a bit when driving but as long as I'm not going fast it should be fine to get me to terminal OK. I've just got to remember to stop putting the bloody handbrake on .

Carpark costs €1 a night but it's right next to the beach and about a half hour walk in to bari should I feel bored enough lol.

I've found a garage on Google in igoumenitsa that does brakes and I can see a motorhome on a ramp in one of their photos so hopefully they can strip that drum off on Monday and have a look.

Maybe . My footbrake etc does seem to be working OK if a little soft . But there's no hydraulics inside the drum on this so it shouldn't really affect them. But it could be getting a bit hot

Tam if they are still open could you try and book Toby in rather than just turn up?
Best of luck
Alan

Going by their reviews I should be OK turning up I think . They seem to have had a few campers turn up with mishaps. A few of the same ones I've had lol

Can you back the adjuster off to give some movement

Can't access anything on it. The wheel moves freely as long as you don't apply the handbrake or reverse. I should Hopefully be able to make it to the garage in igoumenitsa. Then they can have a look.

I've also found an English speaking vet in igoumenitsa with good reviews so I will take jade there after taking van to garage.

She had her tail up for a bit on our short walk just there.
