MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

OK so he jacked up the van , came out from underneath with a nut in his hand ,went in to garage came back out with wire brush , spent 2 minutes underneath brushing came up started van put Meter on terminals and hey presto 14.3v.

I asked him what he did.
He took photo underneath of a crimped terminal on a cable ...he said loose connection overheating cable.

Basically what he had said when I first pulled in this morning. So it looks like he knew his stuff.

Now the part that really hurts.

I don't think it needed the new alternator, and it doesn't need a new battery.

When I left uncle lenny s after we had fitted all my new electrics I had commented to him that the voltage reading on my wee USB plug on the dash only read 12.3 or 12.4v ... and he said at the time, don't be surprised if you discover the starter battery is on its way out. And that wee volt guage has never showed great voltage ... the last few days its been showing 11. Summit all the time even after the New alternator was fitted.

When I checked the voltage at starter battery myself straight after the New alternator was fitted I got 12.98v which I thought was strange but it appeared to be charging at that point so 🤷‍♂️

I think the garage just tested the volts at battery like I've been doing and they assumed the alternator was faulty and they changed it. I think there's a chance it was a loose connection all along.

That volt meter on my dash now reads 13.5v when engine ticking over and 14.8v when revved or driving.

It's never read that before so that fault has been there since we did all the electrics and basically the ablemail battery maintainer has been charging my starter battery since then and not the alternator.

But it's all working now, I have 14.3v going in to starter battery just on tickover and nearly 15v when revved .

Maybe the original alternator was on its way out , maybe not and it was just the belt needing tightened and this loose connection. I guess I'll never know now. But I'm now really pissed off that I didn't at least keep the old alternator which was probably still working.

It's bloody hard when you don't understand electrics ,you're at the mercy of people who do. And it's hard when you're travelling etc and trying to pass that information to other people and ask/take their advice. That can be hard and then it's often guesswork so that can't be helped.

But I'm pissed off that a main iveco dealer garage could have missed that loose connection ,especially as I asked them to check all the connections etc and they said that's what they had done the first day when they put it on the ramp. They then fitted a new alternator and obviously never checked the output at the battery or didn't have the knowledge to know it should have been higher than 12.98v

Throwing money at it isn't always the answer ...like I said.

Sometimes it's just something bloody simple.

The hopeful bonus ( I say hopeful because I've now no trust in that iveco dealer ) is that I now have a more powerful new alternator that should work better than the old one.

I may or may not have to replace the battery later as all this trouble may have damaged it.

Time will tell I guess. I just Hope I have no more trouble with the bloody electrics. My anxiety just can't take it.

The guy was good as gold , he actually apologised to me for making me wait and for being short tempered , to which I had to translate that no no no he was fine and that I'm very grateful and relieved that he's fixed the problem

He wasn't going to take any money from me , but I asked him how much , he said €25 so I've given him €30 . If it has fixed my problem it's worth every penny

The bloody other £460 though well that hurts I have to say ... really hurts

Anyway I'm now back at the wee street I parked at last night. I'm going to have some lunch then I'm going to attempt to walk and find the old town of matera I came here to find. Time is ticking and I wanted to move today to drive to Alberobello that I want to visit tomorrow but will have to see how it goes. As I want to be in or near bari tomorrow night for my ferry on Sunday.

Hopefully I can spend an hour or two in this old town as it looks good on Google.

Just see it as future proofing Tam, at least the new alternator should last for a long time, with considerable more performance too which is never a bad thing, money is just that, only money, it is not the first time you would have wasted some and will not be the last time, both me and my wife have had serious health issues and my wife’s diagnoses is something where there is no cure for and life changing in so many ways, we are way to young to get this kind of shit in our lives, but you have no choice, so just be pleased if you are walking around being reasonable healthy, enjoy every single day as it was your last and just don’t worry about a bit of money, you can’t take it with you🤷🏻‍♂️👍

I think poor uncle lenny and Moreso his wife will also be relieved and hoping it's fixed as he gets the worst of it ...me phoning all the time screaming help!!!

The hab electrics is working faultlessly and that's been such a relief because I don't have to worry about it...it just does its thing. And the ablemail has also proved to be a valuable piece of kit as its got me out the shit 3 times at least now.

I just never expected to have all this hassle with the chassis electrics. I guess that comes with having a van you've not actually driven that much before embarking on a 10k mile trip .

The van has other mechanical issues I'm aware of that I hope to have addressed either in Greece or in Turkey. Let's just hope the bloody thing gets me there.

There's always something, you probably spent that on PCR tests on your first post COVID trip, I'm glad you haven't spoilt our winter viewing by giving up and heading home, and thanks to Uncle Lenny HB too for keeping your pecker up!!

Glad it’s sorted. A loose earth bolt is the first thing I would have checked for. Just saying. 😂😂
Now get on the road and chill. 👍
Yeah mine too and that's why I asked the iveco dealer to check all that before fitting an alternator . I couldn't access it without trying to get under the van which is impossible without lifting it

It seems so often electrical problems are caused by bad earth connections and easily fixed.
Perhaps we should all get familiar with where they are on our own vehicle and check them periodically.
I'm going to go find mine when the temperature rises a little 😀

X244 Ducato if anyone knows where to look ? 😀

Hoooooray! Onward and upward. Great news. Of course,I knew what the problem was,all along, but I didn’t want to interfere :pinocchio:
Will you want to take a later ferry,so you have time to explore where you are?

glad it is sorted, Northernraider get out for your walk with the dugs, sit in the back and hug them then get on with the next step in your journey.has the paracetamol helped Jade
I'm not sure it's had any effect, I gave her a quarter this morning and one around 2pm . She was knackered after our walk around matera the poor girl . Ill give her another quarter when we have dinner around 7pm and another before bed.

Tam, you are not as daft as you look:giggle:. The first thing you did was look for a garage to help and park by there. You also knew what it might be that was causing the issue and also what it might not be.
You need to give yourself more credit for your ability. Every time you have had problems you sort them.
You might have more problems and I, for one, have faith in you.
Cheers pal (y)

Sassi matera is very lovely , real old town like something out of game of thrones , lots of steep stairways to get up to the cathedral at the top. There's lots of grottos and caves around the place too. It would be a great place to explore in the summer season I reckon when everything was open. But it was nice and quiet today for a walk around for an hour or so .

When we got back to the van before I set off I thought I'd just check the voltage readings again . Started up the van , b2b charging , fridge being powered , satnavs and camera on , radio on . I checked the voltage and my heart sank as at the battery with engine just idling it was reading 11.98v again . But fortunately when revved it now rises up to 13+v with all that on . Once driving along it would read up to 13.8 ,13.9v at times on my USB voltmeter but mostly sat around 13.2v , but when I got here to Alberobello if I switched everything off it immediately went back up to 14.8v on that with just idling. So it seems to be all OK now. Ablemail isn't trying to charge it like it was doing so battery must be OK. I'll check voltage again periodically tonight anyway and in the morning to make sure it's not low again.

Fingers crossed.

Onwards and upwards then Tam, it will be ferry time soon (y)
Aye . I have to say I'm not looking forward to the ferry part . 9 hours on deck with 3 dogs is a long time . But I'll be glad to get to Greece at the end of it
