MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Our dog once took a corner to fast on gravel and effectively twisted her ankle ( yes I know thats not the correct term) Anyway took her to the vet, in Turkey, dog was X rayed, no break but the twist had caused internal swelling to the sheath in which all the nerves, tendons etc are housed.
Anti inflammatories and rest cured her. I only mention it because she exhibited the same things you mentioned. It really laid her low but in a relatively short period of time she recovered.
i hope it is a similar story with your dog and she has just been clumsy.

I thought the garage were going to rule out other stuff before changing the alternator, surely the battery would be #1 on the list

I think the alternator was definitely knackered.

Just don't know at the minute if the battery is now also knackered or if there's something else draining it.

I'd like to rule out something else being at fault before I replace the battery otherwise I'd still have the problem and have spent money I didn't need to.

But something isn't right. I've just drove for 3 hours non stop on motorways yet when I've stopped now for lunch my battery maintainer is putting charge in to my starter battery again . My starter battery should be fully charged I'd have thought.

I need to disconnect leads on the starter battery to test it but that will likely be tomorrow now. I'm on route to matera but still 2 hours away . Roadworks and traffic Jams today , and horrendous rain south of napoli

Yeah I'm hoping she's just pulled something, she's only 6 so really it's too early for her to start having issues. Hopefully she'll be fine in a few days. Hate seeing her so miserable

As I said before, I would have no mercy on mr wallet , new battery it is, it hurts only for a day or so, breaking down somewhere inconvenient with the dogs could be a lot more painful👍
Aye but if I replace the battery and it doesn't solve the problem then I still have to fix the problem after it . No point buying a battery till I'm certain that's the issue.

When I thought I had a battery drain I'm pretty sure my brother suggested pulling each fuse and reinserting to see if there was any spark as they went back in. Given you must have quite a drain this might work?

Kerry has Rycarfa* prescribed for her muscle strains & knocks. It's a painkiller/anti inflammatory sort of a canine ibuprofen.
Usually sorts out in a day or so.
It's POM here but I bet you can get it over the counter in countries like Greece or Turkey.

*Active ingredient is Carprofen

Well now I've broke down . Lorry driver flashed me over on motorway as my grey tank hose had fell off the clip . I switched off engine and hey ho now it won't start , battery is dead 😑
Bugger Tam you not having a great start, as a very temp measure to get going can you use jump leads off hab battery?

Not wishing to insult your expertise, but, have you checked the better electrolyte levels or is it not lead acid ??

Sodding typical went through the whole rigmarole with aa Europe they were sending out assistance in 90 minutes, thought I'd try it again and got it started. So I'm going to attempt to get to matera under my own steam. I'm 38 minutes away. Have phoned and cancelled assistance. Wish me luck

Once there sounds like you need to get the starter battery tested?

Had similar last year , turned engine off at a campsite reception & it wouldnt start. Tried allsorts to sort it. Called recovery and when he turned up, it started first time. No codes on OBD either.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

That’s the thing after many years of being an engineer I’ve come across this so many times alternator either over charging or under charging will knacker the battery and vice versa a knackered battery will cook the alternator, sounds to me that the battery has been discharged too low too many times and the plates have started to dissolve and buckle😡

Good luck and first thing tomorrow get the battery tested and if knackered get another one asp and get on your way.
Can’t be doing with all this doom I want to see photos of places I would rarther be than here in 3degrees Devon. 👍 Good luck.

A friend of ours is a vet and said we could give our dog 1/2 paracetamol twice a day safely. It certainly helped. Our daughter has given that dose to her border terrier which looks a similar size to Jade. Hope it helps her

Tam I know u dint like paying site fees but the owner at the go-cart track site just outside matera is really helpful. Sure he knows a auto sparks to sort your problem.
Maybe too late if you have settled somewhere for the night.

What size is your dog?

Tam will need to know this for dosing purposes.

If you stay on site for the night you can get everything fully charged. Easier to diagnose the problem then

Tam, I don’t know you other than reading your posts.
You can obviously tell me to do one but on my wife’s and my first trip to Turkey, in a car, my son said to me “if something goes wrong just throw money at it”
He is of a different generation, earns far more than I ever did but it has resonated with me.
Sometimes it is the only option, grit your teeth, you might not have ever done it at home but you are where you are, just spend it and write it off over the whole trip and of course your future ownership.
Peace of mind and confidence in your vehicle can’t be priced.

“if something goes wrong just throw money at it”
I used to work for farmers & the technical director & one of the owners, ,although as tight as a drum, had the attitude that money solved everything.
