MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Islands are the worst in a motorhome in season, usually only one road round so difficult to hide n park n people just don’t seem to want you parked where they are. Mainland every time.

Not all Greek islands. On my favourite island in 2021 and 2023 we were the only MH on the island.

Well it's costing me 200 quid to visit this island and it's only really the 2nd day so too early to write it off yet. I was in 2 minds whether to do it or not but a few folk had said it was worth the trip.. so I'm giving it a go. I'm hoping I'll find a couple of spots that aren't so popular with tourists. I thought this beach behind airport would be quiet due to the noise etc but its very very busy. . Even now at 6.30pm the carpark is chocked full

Get away from the south of the island and up North. Always better up North. I'll have alook on the map for a really quiet place which you might like and you might even be able to overnight. There was a disco there years ago but it closed and the land in front of it was empty. Tra la! Parking place. I'll report back when I find it.

I've been on Google maps and if my memory is holding up it will be Foki beach. Looks like the old disco is now a taverna. And there is a nice big square parking place just along the road towards Fiskardo (if you are travelling clockwise you'll get to the parking place before the taverna and beach).

The beaches (mostly pebbles) on the north of the island before you reach Fiskardo and after going through the town down the east side of the island, are all much quieter and all the better for it. I am talking 15 years ago though! I thought they were great. Much nicer than the South of the island, for me anyway.

The road back down the east side of the island (after Sami and to Poros) is very scenic and worth some stops for the views and photos.

I'm the only motorhome on this island. But there are a million tourists with hire cars that can get absolutely anywhere and everywhere. Even this peninsula is mobbed. This current beach I drove miles to get to is only about 12-15 metres long and there are 13 hire cars full of people on it. I'm hoping they feck off before it gets dark so we can at least get a little time on it. Nowhere on this island is free of people .. and I understand why there are no other campers here.

Nowhere is sacred

One leaves another 2 arrive. I could move but I'm over half way round the bloody island already and only been here 2 days ..

Doesn’t look too crowded to me. Blue sky, beautiful sea, parking space, what more could a chap want. It’s unfortunate that so many people like the same things as you do.;)

Enjoy the good bits. Be content with small blessings. Ignore the not so good bits.

But you have chosen an island with an international airport with charter flights.

MY island and several others I know are 2 hours or more by ferry from airports.

There are experienced Greek island-hoppers on this forum. Maybe you should have asked some questions.

look back through the thread Tam did ask about this and other island sand there was positive feedback and encouragement from a number of people about visiting this island.

It does not help him much any of us telling him different now.

I get Tam's frustration when the beaches are full of people he has to keep his dogs on leads and it is hard work walking 4 dogs on leads. I find it hard work walking 2 dogs on leads:unsure:

Kefalonia has a very long coastline as it is not a small island, plenty of isolated coves and bays around but finding them takes some time, I have never failed to find un serviced beaches where I had rarely an other living soul around me on the island, failing that hire a little boat for 50 pound and take the dogs out for the day, plenty of the coves and beaches are not reachable at all by pesky hire cars, but only from the sea, nice day out with a pick nick and enough water 🤷🏻‍♂️👍

Great idea Dutch 68 🙂 I love it! And it's something I would of also suggested although I know from experience that Tam doesn't have the greatest of sea legs, but I would love to see the pics of captain Tam & his Motley crew!
🚣‍♂️🐕🐶🐕🐶
That would be priceless 😂 hope he takes you up on your suggestion 👍

I was not being critical of the advice and encouragement Tam got, far from it.

I was responding to the comment the he should have asked for advice, when he did exactly that.

I must have missed Tam's request, but that is quite easy in such a long thread with many posts a day.

No signal at the beach we were at last night... People there till 9pm so too late to let dogs on it last night, sun was down and mosquitoes were out. Got up early this morning . Dogs got till 09.10 before the first lot of beach goers arrived.. I honestly can't believe people spend 12+ hours on a fecking beach ... 2 maybe 3 at a push then I'm bored. Anyway I had a shower then left to try to find another .. I've been right round the coast of this peninsula... only 2 places were accessible with anything bigger than a vw t5 camper .. 1 of which wanted 10 euro to park 25 euro if overnight . Still not found anywhere. Not sure the last time any of you were on this island but believe me I'm not shy at taking roads most folk wouldn't take a motorhome but there just are not many options. I followed 2 separate dirt tracks for a good few miles and then had to reverse back .
Anyone who feels like it have a look on park4night at the options on this island and I will tell you the issue with every one of them . I'm now back at lixouri .. the only options left really are the few very popular beaches up the stretch of west coast before I reach the ferry terminal to lefkada .. I'd hoped to stay on kefalonia 7-10 days bit that's looking highly unlikely as there is nothing else here bar beaches.. no lakes ,rivers , nowt to see like castles or anything . Its rather boring if I'm honest. And nowhere you would want to stay more than 1 night as can't take dogs on beaches full of people .. and don't want to sit inside van all day either.

Winter time it might be worth a visit in a van...but to be honest. You can fly here and stay all inclusive for £500 lol ... considering the ferry adds up to over £200 that would be the best option if you wanted to visit.

Obviously some folk have enjoyed it here before but it's not for me and my style of travelling, and it's not for dogs

There is probably a greek holiday internet forum somewhere where there are numerous complaints about a lone Scotsman with an old van and four dogs taking up three car parking spaces when they were trying to park by the sea. ;)
Feck em Charlie 😁

When the kids were younger we promised them a beach hoilday of the two weeks on the Spanish Costas I don't think we spent more than 1½ hours on the beach in a day.

Just to make you feel better its blowing a gale here, hissing down & we have put the heating on.

Made a last ditch attempt at finding somewhere and drove out to atheras which is on the north tip of the peninsula, still people here but nowhere near as many. One other motorhome here. I've got a spot on the beach so will see how this goes.

Try google earth and check out the roads and terrain. I did that yesterday and it was obvious that this island wasn't for you. I think you might benefit looking in advance before moving on. Good luck, and yes still a great thread and great photos

The other motorhome is from Netherlands, I said hello and got completely blanked. He has the leg off his awning trying to fix it by hitting it with a large stone , obviously hasn't got a hammer . I have and many other tools , if he had at least said hello I'd offer to fix it for him .
