MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Looks like you’re in a good place to break down Tam even though it’s a pain. Good luck with tomorrow. 👍
Hmm is there ever a good place lol. I'm just hoping I can get the issue sorted and get back on the road. I was only just starting to have some faith in the old boy again. I do hope it's a simple fix and not some complicated expensive electrical fiasco.

You still got heat I take it?

Yeah the hab side of things is all OK. My heating doesn't need any power thankfully but My leisure battery was fully charged before this started playing up....which is also weird. And it was still powering the fridge relay etc from the d+ it just wasn't charging the battery.

It could be a knackered alternator, extra load from b2b put extra strain on it, and then the belt,( squeak), confirms the alternator was working hard, then maybe leisure batteries took the last juice it could deliver. Did you checked the grounding/ earth strap?

Civitavechia is the place you take the ferry to Sardinia.

You and I have older vehicles.

They might have problems but they are usually easy to fix.

My alternator belt always squeals at startup, has done for 6 years.....

Visited Rome years ago on a cruise from your port.....not impressed - too much traffic,

must have been so much better back in Roman times (except for the gladiators!)

I wouldn’t want the aggro, I would just do he lot lol, new alternator , belts and new starter battery, ( the best ones possible, not some budget Chinese crap, good luck with the repair , hope they can fit you in🥲

If the fridge is still working and the battery light on the dash is off, although the alternator is either intermittent or not working it's still giving a D+ output.

Before you try and start the engine make sure 12v on the fridge is turned off or pull the D+ wire on the relay and disconnect the B2B.

They fridge will be taking 10 amps & the B2B up to 40 amps won't take long to flatten the battery.

Are you paying the bill lol. I'm not in to replacing things that aren't broken only the parts that are. The starter battery is only a few years old and as far as I'm aware it was working OK. It's never went flat before. The belts are all new , all belts were renewed the week before I left home. The alternator is a bosh and I believe its the original one that was on the van from new.

I only want to replace the part that isn't working. I'm dreading the bill as it is as it just eats in to my budget.

Yep the d+ is obviously still working my fridge and reverse camera was still working all the time.

I've switched the fridge off now , where is the best place to disconnect the b2b? I'd rather avoid taking those heavy cables off the battery connections if I can. Would disconnecting the b2bs d+ cable stop it from working?

Edit.

Actually while the d+ obviously was still working on my drive to here I'm not sure it's still working now as the camera screen went off completely once I got here and I'm also wondering if its the d+ that shuts off the fuel pump and that's why it wouldn't shut off when I took the key out. I'll check it with meter before I try to start van.

My other concern is that whilst my battery maintainer has used my leisure battery to top up my starter battery overnight so I might be able to start it . It has taken my leisure battery down from 105ah to 88ah to do it. With the b2b not charging my leisure battery now and a cloudy day with rain forecast this afternoon I won't have any way to recharge my leisure battery 😢

And if the battery maintainer continues to recharge the engine battery I'm going to run out of leisure battery too. So if this garage can't fix it today I'm gonna be screwed on all counts.

It's sodding typical, I needed the bright sunny days to continue.

I know what you’re saying tam, BUT in fairness to Dutch 68 it used to be the old saying replace all three (Battery, starter, and alternator) cos when one went down it wasn’t long before the others followed it👍
AND you might not be so conveniently parked close to dealers or motorfactor shops next time😉👍
BUT hopefully it might be something rather simple 👍

Yeah but this van is 25 years old lol. If I replaced everything that might go wrong I'd be aswell buying a new van.

OK so this morning before starting the van I've disconnected the negative lead for the b2b charger from the starter battery . Made sure everything else is switched off. Checked voltage of starter battery and it was around 12.5v .

Started the van , it started first turn of the key. With it idling the battery is reading 13.5v which would indicate its getting some charge 🤔. No squeaking of fan belt yet either.

Now here's the weird thing .

If the van is just idling the battery voltage measures 13.5v but if I rev it or hold the revs up instead of the voltage going up as it would normally its going down . So now its reading 12.75v

Tried phoning uncle lenny but the southern softy must still be in bed.

Don't know if you can take dogs on Italian public transport. I would suggest you don't drive into Rome it was a nightmare even out in the suburbs and as for finding parking dream on.
Oh and the ticket touts will have block booked all the Colosseum tickets so they can rip you off.

The way it's going I don't think I'll be going to Rome lol.

I found plenty parking spots near it on park4night but many report robberies . I'm not bothered about going inside colloseum I'd just like to see outside

Well so far iveco are no help . I asked at reception used Google translate to tell them the problem . I got told to park the van over by garage door. And so far no one has come near me except to get me to move out the way twice now. I can't turn off engine incase it doesn't start again but my volt meter is reading 13.8v at the minute. I'm getting impatient and frustrated and not sure if I should just leave and go try another garage. As no one here seems keen to help .

Can you use a translate app on your phone. I have done that in Spain before works well or at least better than nothing.
I did that to tell the person at reception the problem ie the battery is not being charged. But its way more complicated than that so trying to explain whats going on is going to be difficult.

That's if anyone actually comes to bloody look at it as no one has so far

They more than likely have stuff to finish/move so they can get you in mate.
Telling you to park near the door is a good start,I was expecting them to say
no there too busy.
Good luck Northernraider with getting you on the road again (y)
Yeah but I've been moved from the door twice now . No one has spoke to me other than to move me. I've no idea if anyone is going to look at it or not . So I could be sitting here for nothing.

Best to keep parking back near the door,I’m sure they will get to you asap Tam 🤞

Not knowing the vehicle, and just reading what’s on here, I’m more inclined to think engine battery.

If the alternator is knackered how is the fridge working on DC and the leisure battery fully charged?

But anyway, a few checks with the right equipment should soon establish what’s what and good luck 🤞🏼
