MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Is it not always the case that no matter how much you expect something to cost it is always more expensive.

Having looked online at price of alternators etc and they vary from around £140 to £250 in the UK so I figured that with labour etc it would be maybe €400

But they have given me a quote

New alternator €380
1 hour labour €45
Ancillaries which I can't remember exact amount but only €20 or so and then obviously the equivalent of vat

So €538 all together 😭😭😭

Which is terrible but I have no alternative unfortunately.

The alternator will arrive tomorrow morning around 10am so I can stay here or come back at 9am tomorrow morning.

If I have any problems starting the van they'll send someone to me to jump start it.

So new alternator tomorrow and Mr wallet is crying . As am I

And no coffee and cake

You are lucky they are only charging one hour labour, you must have already had that.

I know it’s no concelation but having had Iveco breakdowns with three Motorhomes abroad over the years when l have limp d into a dealer they have always come up trumps, time taken and costly but always attended me, that’s saying something about Iveco policy.
A day or two and all will be forgotten apart from you driving with a smart smug on your face,

There’s a lot to be said for buying a new van, no worn out components. 😎

Tam. Try and look on the positive side mate, you will be confident that everything will be charging which is VERY important aspect of a fully functioning van.
It could well get “chilly” as you go North East
and you will be on the road again this time tomorrow 🤞
Wishing you nothing but good vibes and happy travels.
I was going to say “ It’s only money “ but then I remembered you are Scot, so it’s a lot more painful for you 🙄.
Mitch.

Yeah but when something goes wrong it could cost you the same amount to fix it as I paid for this van.

Engine goes on a 40 grand van you've no option to fix it , maybe costing 10k

Engine goes on a van this old it's either a second hand engine from scrap or the van gets sold for spares or repair.

Guess thats a genuine alternator so not too bad and only 1 hour labour at a very cheap €45, still a lot but could be worse and you will hopefully be on the road again confident its all working.

They only had it on the ramp for 10 minutes or so, when I went back from dog walk it was outside.

It's only 2 bolts to change it and easier from underneath so I only expected an hour labour but I expected it to be more than €45 , so the labour isn't a problem it's the alternator price that's very high. I just hope it's a good quality alternator and the right ampage as I forgot to ask him the details of it.

But it has to be sorted I just hope there's no more problems with it.

Alternator a bit pricey but labour is ridiculously low so overall not too bad.

You may have got a garage to supply an alternator in the UK for £200 to £250 but labour would have been many times the 40 quid they are quoting you, Iveco main dealer here would be around £150/hour and would probably charge for a lot more than just one hour.

Glad you will soon be on your way, we are having a new camera fitted tomorrow, must watch where they hook it up to if not to existing fitting,

Doesn’t sound too bad to me , can you imagine the French repairing this, they would have your pants down looking for 4 figures lol🤷🏻‍♂️😇👍

€45+VAT for labour ... we just paid £138 to have ours diagnosed and I doubt it took more than 10 minutes!!!!

Nothing worse than a failure when on the road and the gnawing feeling wondering how serious it is, where you can get help and not being ripped off from a non English speaking garage.
One of my worst fears when travelling in Europe, even with breakdown cover.
It's a RPITA. Hopefully, this is now all sorted and you will once again enjoy your adventure in the days to follow. Safe travels.

Is there a resource in here where we could add garages to a map where funsters have tried and tested them?

Could be really handy and the amount of breakdown threads we've had recently, it wouldn't take long to fill it up.
He has actually done something that I have suggested in all these breakdown threads, that is going out and finding your own garage rather than waiting for a breakdown lorry to take you where you don't want to go.

Yeah, but how many of the others were still driving? Sometimes you have no choice.

I assume you will connect your camera and monitor somewhere other than the d+ now or else risk buggering your new alternator.
Yeah i disconnected thar earlier and I'll now piggyback it off the fridge relay so it will still come on and off with the engine but not the d+.

If only it had cost 40 grand.
Yep I know lol. I'd not sleep a wink if I had a camper over £100k it's just not for me lol. I worried about my 40k frankia constantly. And I bumped it 4 times on that 1 trip
