I bet it’s not as cold as it is here:cold:
Weird climate here look at the variation of night temperatures for the next week . Tonight being the coldest

Only 4.5 here today and now below zero, just not on for the South East, had to drain the van last night.

Neighbors think I'm running a campsite here getting my 5th Funster visit tomorrow within a couple of weeks.

Tam

When you get to Greece are you planning to drive over the North to Turkey or taking a ferry to the Dodecanese and then a quick ferry across to Turkey?

I'll probably drive round the North like I did on the way to Bulgaria. But that won't be till end of January at least

Hey Tam ... I think you're camera's got subsidence, or are you going all arty-farty with a 'leaning camera of Moby'? 😄

Well it wouldn't be a tam trip without problems eh , every fecking time.

So I left my parking spot this morning pulled in for diesel a few miles after moving , filled up and when I went to start the van it was dead. 3 attempts and nothing, opened the bonnet checked battery terminals must have gave them a wiggle and tried again and it started . Made a mental note to check terminals when I stopped in case bad connection and got on the road. Been driving a while and suddenly my camera starts switching itself off and on and my speedo starts going wonky working one minute and not the next . I pulled in to a petrol station and popped the bonnet , terminals are fine , my 12v socket for powering satnav etc is reading 11.9v even with engine running , put volt meter on the battery with engine running it's just over 12v. No warning lights on the dash but I suspect my alternator has packed in

Yep, sounds like the alternator, try disconnecting the B2B or switching it to ½ power. Then see if the volts rise.
I wouldn't have thought the B2B wouldn't be putting much load on the alternator as you don't use much power and the leisure battery would soon be charged after not much driving.

Also the Ablemail should have topped up the battery overnight but if it is the alternator the battery could have been low when you stopped & the Ablemail is only charging at 2 amps I think.
To help the situation you can double the charge rate on Ablemail.
With any luck it may just be the battery & a quick fix.

Check the grounding cable as well, when engine running if the voltage from positive of battery measures higher on engine ground, compared to battery post negative. That meand the negative link from engine-chassis- battery its loose or weak.

Weren't you being annoyed by a squealing belt a few days ago - something to do with that [I really have no idea], not spinning the alternator fast enough???
I really shouldn't be offering an opinion, I barely know where to put the diesel in, and fill the screen wash.

Hope you sort it easily [and cheaply]

Have you checked the earth strap? Often the cause of multiple electrical faults.

So I'm now in a town called civitavecchia, its a Port /ferry town north of Rome. I was heading here anyway as a lunch stop before hopefully getting to the outskirts of Rome tonight with the intention of visiting the colloseum etc tomorrow but of course that's now buggered as I have van issues. I continued driving to here basically as I was scared to switch off the engine incase it didn't start again . When I got in to town I googled mechanics around me and as it happens there's an iveco truck n bus garage here so I just headed for there as I suspect I'll need parts. Pulled up outside and again put my meter on the battery terminals while engine running and I was getting over 14v ....briefly . But then that dropped to 12v again . Went to turn off engine and I could turn off key and remove it and engine didn't stop 🤔 ... I had to stall it to turn off engine. Tried to start it again and its dead , with engine stopped battery reading 11.8v so the alternator isn't charging the battery , weirdly I have no battery warning light coming on the dash though which it should if the alternator is faulty. So I'm a little stumped. The terminals all seem tight. The alternator is difficult to get to or to see but the terminals all feel tight there too. I have done over 2000 miles recently with no issues other than squeaking belt so I think the connections are fine. It won't start now...buy my ablemail battery maintainer is trickle charging the starter battery from my leisure just now so it will hopefully get enough to start it in the morning. The fault may well have occurred yesterday and the Same thing has happened overnight last night..its hard to tell.

But at the minute I'm basically stuck . I'm outside iveco and round the corner from a large independent parts supplier so I can only wait till tomorrow morning and see if I can get iveco to look at it or try to find an auto electrician. I can price up a new alternator from both iveco and the independent place around the corner. I suspect its the alternator itself that's buggered up but it might be something easier who knows. I've checked everything I can check for now .

Is the starter battery warm?

Ian

Civitavecchia is the end of the railway line that goes direct to 'Terminii' which is the main railway station in the middle of Rome.
The town is also a main stop for all the cruise lines that go around the Med.

As such, the service should be good.
