MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Not knowing the vehicle, and just reading what’s on here, I’m more inclined to think engine battery.

If the alternator is knackered how is the fridge working on DC and the leisure battery fully charged?

But anyway, a few checks with the right equipment should soon establish what’s what and good luck 🤞🏼
Uncle lenny might be able to explain better than me but it seems to be the d+ is working fine , and the alternator is charging intermittently. Its putting out enough to turn off battery light on dash etc but not enough to charge the battery. I think the diode pack is knackered

Tam you said voltage was dropping when revved. Can you check at the alternator end. If it drops there it is knackered, if it rises there but drops at battery end you have a cable, terminal or earth problem.
I can't get to the back of the alternator without a ramp unfortunately.

I should mention that I can't rev it and put meter on battery at the Same time so the dropping voltage etc was based purely on the volt reading on my USB charger I have in the dash that has a voltmeter on it. So it's not absolutely accurate but it sat at 13.6v when idling and when I revved engine it dropped to 12.6v

The garage has just checked battery with volt meter and he says there's a little charge coming from alternator but very little . I think they want to change the alternator. But they say I need to be patient as they might not get alternator today. So I may have to stay here till they can get one.

Hopefully they are right and that’s the problem. If it is the alternator, and it’s the original one,it's had a good life.

Sounds like they are on the case now so that's good. 1 week wait at least for garages around here.

Another hour or two and Uncle Lenny might be up to add his expert opinion.

I mentioned to them about voltage drop and he's convinced its the alternator is knackered. There's a mechanic here now who speaks good English so that helps.

I think maybe the squeaking it's been doing has been the alternator starting to fail and maybe not the belt needing tightened. Maybe it's having to work too hard with the b2b etc .

Good luck getting in sorted Tam.

Sounds like you are in the right place at the right time.

I've been on the phone to him and he thinks it's most likely the diode that's failed too. But not easy to get someone just to replace that so it will probably be a new alternator.

The guy who speaks English seems to be a manager of some sort . He says as its an ivevo they might have an alternator here but he needs to check .

Yeah but this van is 25 years old lol. If I replaced everything that might go wrong I'd be aswell buying a new van.
Don't want to be doing that Tam, you know they are just shoddy goods waiting to break 😁😁😁😁😆😆😆😆

As Tam said spoken to him, the alternator is behaving wierd. I don't know a lot about alternators but they need a voltage applying to then to excite them before they start charging they do is in various ways.

My guess is the exciter voltage is applied from the regulator often called a diode pack and that is faulty.

I've just found out Tam has a reversing camera and monitor that have one supply the silly bugger had wired them to the D+ so I reckon that has fu*d the regulator on the alternator, far too much load for the D+.

Be patient Tam l know you don’t like paying top dollar but sometimes you have to go with the flow Enron though it costs, they are on it now and that’s good news with spoken English a bonus , they having the facility you needed will find any other incidental issue that will get sorted and you will be on your way all sorted with the loss of a day.

Patience Thomas….. to get an Italian to look at your van on a Monday morning in a couple of hours is about as rare as the second coming… (perhaps that’s who they think you are..😉)

The garage has good feedback and a good rating on google. Your in the right place and I’m sure they will sort it asap…

Leave it with them and take the dogs for a walk..😎

New alternator a must, not just diodes, its a good thing, as the bearings on the old one can't be brilliant, to much strain on the belt, then affects the output.
Yeah I've succumbed to the fact it's probably gonna cost me a few Bob to sort it. But it needs doing and I can't be doing with the stress and anxiety worrying about it. I expect I'll be £3-400 lighter by the time it's done. The joy of an older vehicle but when I see some of the crazy prices involved to fix newer vans it's not so bad. The old boy has been going well and all my hab electrics, heating etc etc has been performing great so if it solves the problem and all is well then it's money well spent.

But I would like it not to drain my wallet entirely on this trip. I had planned on getting some work done on it in Turkey if I find a place that can clean up and paint the underside and the bumpers etc . But that will be dependent on how the van performs otherwise.

Aye I checked out their reviews last night . They seem to be generally good so here's hoping they sort me out at a fair price and they'll get another one 😁

Tam

I had a problem with my Bosch alternator on my boat on a small Greek island and I was fortunate that the bus company had a workshop dealing with Bosch alternators. They changed the regulator, bench-tested it under load which fixed it. The alternator is still running in that boat and is 45 years old.

If they have a regulator maybe get them to change that first to see if itt fixes the problem. If not can they get a reconned alternator?

I think with how busy this garage is if they just replace the alternator I'll be lucky at that. I reckon the exsisting one is 25 years old though so as Raul said its probably best to just renew it anyway as the bearings etc will be worn. I'm not just reliant on it charging my engine battery but also in cloudy rainy weather I need it to charge all my leisure side of things too.

Knowing my luck I'd have the regulator changed only for the rest of it to pack In later.

Tam you could afford a brand new van if you really wanted to, but you wouldn't be Tam the Northernraider the Tam we all love and follow his adventures on here, no you'd be some boring big fecker just driving about in his fancy new moho with no tool kits etc! (can you imagine that!!) taking photys of dugs & sunsets and stuff and we'd all get quickly bored with it all, it's the rich tapestry of life you put up on here, the good stuff & the shite stuff, today is just a shite stuff day but there's 100s of good stuff days ahead of you so keep on keeping on big yin and remember all my life quotes I torture you with 👍😉

You know me so well 🤣🤣

Sadly uncertainty is causing you worry. Can you find somewhere to walk dogs that might help you and them. 🤞🤞
Yeah I'm waiting till they're ready to take the van in to work on it as I'll have to take dogs out then . Its cold and cloudy today and I'm in a big industrial area away from anywhere nice I think so I'm holding off till they want to work on it then I'll have to go kill am hour somewhere. Just had some lunch not heard any news yet

Are they like the Spanish ?
Knock off at 1200 until sometime around 3pm if they can be bothered
No .if they stopped for lunch I never noticed there's been vehicles going in and out all day. They came about 10 minutes ago and had me drive the camper in and on to a ramp .I assumed that they were just fitting a new alternator on and asked how long they needed so I could walk dogs and come back but he says they now going to check everything to make sure it is the alternator etc. So I'm none the wiser at the minute. I've come out with the dogs and will go back in a bit to see what they say.
