MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

We stayed over last night at mëke golu, a dormant volcano , sadly the lake part has been mostly dry since 2015 but its still impressive. This area of Turkey is pretty barren, its the closest to desert they have . We had a nice sunset last night, bit windy this morning but still managed to put the drone up for some photos. Couldn't fly it over the crater as it kept losing signal not sure if it was some kind of interference due to the volcano itself or what as it wasn't that far distance wise and nothing to block the antenna so very strange . Exceptional photography Tam👍

I had no idea of the scale of that volcano until I spotted your motorhome. That is a spookily barren landscape. Here in NZ, we are more than a little wary of volcanoes after the eruption of White Island that killed 22 people in 2019.

Yeah the whole area around there is one big volcano. If you look at the pics you will see there's a few other craters in the background. Interesting place for sure

When we left the volcano yesterday we drove through a very flat very boring area .....I never knew long straight boring roads like this existed outside of America.... I'd guess we drove between 40 and 50 miles where there was next to nothing. There was a huge snowy mountain in the distance that took nearly an hour to get to

Definitely a lot cooler up here , not sure what elevation we are now from sea level but from the coast we have climbed a lot of hills and don't seem to have went down many. Got out for diesel at one point and it was freezing. We arrived in Aksaray around 2pm , had lunch and a walk around the park that we're parked up in. Came across this wee family , mum and 2 pups. The poor buggers look like they've got mange or something lots of fur missing, possibly the most feral of dogs I've met ...not aggressive as such but not wanting to come near. So I put some food out for them ,puppy food for the babies and ordinary kibble for the mamma, she wouldn't eat while I was close by but she did go get it when I had backed off to the camper.

Big pack of dogs running around the park last night , can hear them barking those morning but can't see them . Hopefully they're friendly enough when we go out for our walk.

Rained a fair bit last night too and forecast shows a bit for today again . We will be heading to selime today to see the cathedral etc. Only about 40 minutes drive away.

When we packed up work and went on the road in 1998, many of our friends said they wished they could live our lives, but they needed to work for various reasons. Now 25 years later and they've retired, guess just how many of them have taken the chance?

Love the photos of the volcanoes, Tam.

Yeah it's sad really that people have been socially conditioned to always concentrate on the future that they completely miss the present. Possessions are the ultimate goals these days.

According to ventusky app low pressure system in the black sea with big cold front sweeping across central and eastern turkey.
Fortunately just some intermittent rain showers here in Cyprus and a pleasant 20°

We arrived in selime this morning, been a shitty day weather wise. I parked in a carpark some clown put on park4night saying it gave a good view of the selime cathedral.... so between rain we ventured out to go see these rock, cave houses and the cathedral ... only to discover afterwards this was not the cathedral or the proper place lol... its further up the road a bit but as the weather's crap I'll visit the proper one tomorrow when it's a bit drier. But may aswel post the pictures of the ones we discovered ..

Very interesting though

Very interesting though
Indeed - including the what and the why... and the when and are they still in use.
Did the weather make it dark outside, your pics look as if the ISO has been pushed up a bit.
The dogs with spikey collars , friendly?

I agree who puts a collar like that on a dog:cry:

Those dogs just look sad :(
They're kangal shepherd dogs , there were several up round those caves .. stopped us from getting any closer as they were barking and going nuts. I'm guessing there was livestock up there and these dogs will protect them to the death. Had my lot shitting themselves unfortunately. I have to admit they made me kinda nervous too.

They were houses and churches of early Christians around 500ad , some are still part of houses others just used as storage sheds.

Dogs not that friendly...possibly would have been better if I'd not had mine with me. They're herd guardian's so if there was livestock about they see any dogs as a threat. They mostly just barked loudly ...made no attempt to attack or anything but I didn't want to get too close.

And to give a proper idea of size lol

Certainly one of the biggest dogs I've seen . On all fours they were spine level with my waist and I'm 6ft 3

They look just like Anatolian Shepherd Dogs which is about right for the area. Friendly but wary of strangers. Used to protect the flocks
Yeah anatolian, kangal. Very similar breeds. A local guy told me they were kangals, there's about a dozen of them in this village .

Can’t wait to see the correct place as those cave houses are beautiful, so nice some are still occupied. Couldn’t say that about new UK ones in 100 years never mind thousands lol
I saw big shepherd dogs like that in rural Portugal

I then went in to visit the rock cathedral and monestary, I'm a little pissed off as I got charged €15 to go in yet I discovered later you can just walk in from the other side with no charge like the 2 French and 1 German motorhomers did... so 6 of them in for free and I got screwed for 15 euro lol. That'll no be happening again.

Anyway it's an amazing structure ... must have taken them years to carve all that out ...there are rooms all the way up to the top of the cliff.
