MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Having a nightmare so only on briefly .. my esim I bought says its installed but not working...I've had to buy a 500mb data pass from ee for £8 just so I can get online. Had no park4noght or anything so I'm currently sat on the side of the road trying to find where I can get a turkcell shop ... I'm on the brink of turning round and going to Bulgaria as I'm pissed off with Turkey already ... border was an absolute shambles . Took nearly 2 hours with all their messing around ,insurance cost me €184 which is nearly twice what I've been told by several folk . Feeling a bit stranded and stressed at the minute . No idea why my turk Telekom sim is not working, and I grudge giving ee Wabbits £8 a day for half a gig.. I'll be feckin them off when back in UK.

I'm not technically minded but the esim I bought in Greece worked no probs so not sure why this one isn't unless something on phone needs activated or something but the app says its installed etc
 
Don't give up on it Tam, Turkey is a beautiful country with lovely people but you'll need to get well south of where you are if you want to start getting the better weather, but on the bright side it'll be great weather for you coming back this way again in a few months time, border insurance does sound a bit steep though at £184 but think they've all shot up worldwide so previous figures could be way off, but once you get your sim all sorted you'll be fine mate, unfortunately can't help too much with your sim card problems we just bought Turkcell tourist sims from a Turkcell shop, the staff were very helpful you need your passport with you and in 2022 it was 20gb and a couple of hundred texts & minutes for 400 TL (about 11quid) and if I remember right there were lots of free bonus data for Instagram Facebook etc but I never used any of that palaver

I've tried everything possible ... it says it's active but although it says 4g etc on the phone it's not doing anything I can't access Internet. I'm losing the will to live.

And 500mb from ee won't last me long .
 
Does your phone pick up automatic network? Is there a way to select a network manualy?
Try re boot the phone and let it search for service.
My teltonica router drops out no service, despite having signal and telling its connected. I reboot the router sometimes 2-3 time until service resumes. This is with EE unlimited sim. It happened in Germany, Hungary and now in Romania. Not often but it does drop out.
 
I know it’s expensive Tam but wouldn’t starlink suit your needs, (extensive travelling) you would have instant ready internet and just knock off the subscription charges when you’re back in U.K.👍

I've literally tried everything, I've restored phone 100 times , I've tried installing manually and letting phone do it. I've tried changing apn names etc but it does nothing... I'm not technically minded so I'm lost with all this shit. The esim I used in Greece worked no problem but the Turkish one says installed and active but no Internet.


This is when I really hate travelling alone.. I rely heavily on Internet. I know this 500mb from ee is going to run out soon then I'm stranded. I can't find banks, phone shop, parkups etc. I'm in gelibolu at the minute.. shithole parking but there's a turkcell shop here I think so will need to just get ripped off there I think.

There's a British motorhome parked here but no one around at the minute..

Dogs and boy racers with loud shite music everywhere not helping with my stressing out

My poor dogs have had an equally shit day

Just been round turkcell shop and they want 1150tl for 20gb tourist sim which is £30 I read about this on-line and apparently there's lots of them ripping off tourists . The last review for that shop was 7 months ago and that quoted 35 euro for 50gb .

I forgot my passport so I didn't buy it

I'm pissed off
 
As I said I've tried everything with it .

I've just purchased another esim from a different company and it's installed and activated straight away with no issues. It has to be a fault with the esim from airalo .

I've contacted them and so far I'm just getting the runaround asking me for lots of screenshot etc etc.

I'm new to this esim nonsense but it isn't half complicated.

So the new one with etravelsim.com seems to be working OK, it's 25gb for £20 lasts 30 days using turkcell. But the one I bought from airalo 20gb for £10.86 using turk telekom still doesn't seem to be working.



Bloody ee cost me £8 though just to get that sorted. My Scottish nerves are shot to hell.


But the turkcell shop wanted £30 for 20gb and that seems a rip off. Loads of folk I follow on Instagram that were through Turkey last year paid about half of that. Insurance too. So I'm not sure what's going on but its been an expensive day.

On the plus side diesel was 41tl a litre which I think is just over a quid a litre ....I was on fumes after all the messing around at the border so it took 2250tl £59 to fill the tank . And I filled up lpg to at 20tl a litre , it took 363tl £9.50 to fill it.

A bit less stressed now I have Internet. Its amazing how much we rely on it these days or at least I do ..

I'll post up the pics from the border and give more details etc later as I really need to take my poor dogs for a walk .

Maybe get some pics of gelibolu too. Staying here tonight now. Also need a bank tomorrow to exchange some currency as I only have pounds and euros ..

That's made my mind up as it was one of the two esim companies I'm looking at for my trip to Peru.

You need prompt support when it all goes tits up.

My money is the local operator is being slow to activate, especially if you're still relatively close to the Greek border.

Honestly it is activated it shows 4g in the top corner when I turn that sim on but it just will not open anything .

I've lost patience with the thing but the company airalo are really slow and they want me to take screenshot of all the settings etc ...which in order to do I've to turn off the new sim turn on their one go through all the settings to take pics then turn that sim off again turn the new one on so I can get Internet to send the bloody pics to them its just too much hassle . Everyyime I switch sims I've to reboot phone or it doesn't switch so it takes forever .
 
How long are you are you anticipating being in Turkey?

The other esim who has good reviews is Holafly
Just looked... they cover Turkey
Their 30 day price is €70 but that's for unlimited data... no calls/texts

Wonder if there's any actual Turk Telekom network service where you are?
We get dead areas in the UK, depending on network.

Anyway Holafly does an unlimited esim for "Europe"... €99.99 for 90 days.

Reviews are good especially for support. But some report they seem to be throttled at over 2gb/day.

Tam just write it off and enjoy your trip. 👍 your wind yourself up over it and it ruin a good trip.

They've now given me a credit for the cost of the sim ... so I will try another one in a few weeks time or whatever and see if it works next time. As I said the one I bought from them in Greece was spot on. It might just be a technical error.

But the new one is working fine

I'm planning to stay in Turkey for the 3 months if I can ... I may or may not visit Georgia during that 3 months too but will wait and see.

I looked at a few unlimited ones but I don't think I need it to be honest. I normally get by with the 20gb ..sometimes a little tight but I've 25gb now so should be fine hopefully. If not I can just top it up as and when required.
