Firstly and foremost Ian, as pointed out already, their dog's safety and welfare is their responsibility, and I know you'll be feeling bad about it, but the accident (which is what it is) is not your fault, if the dog was not clearly visible.
We came close to being in the same situation at St Valerie en Caux, where this French woman allowed her dog to jump out her MH, and hide under ours, every time she opened her blooming door. It took Rita to lose her rag and shout at the woman, before she realised what the problem was. I was in gear and handbrake off, ready to roll, when Rita spotted the bloody dog under the MH.
As a gesture of good will, you could stay to to establish how the dog is, and express concern about it's welfare, but do not give the owners any opportunity to apportion blame onto you. We're there any witnesses?
What a start to your day.
The best of luck.
Jock.
