Ian and helga go south !!

As the others have said re Belgium (y) but do think you will miss out not going through Andorra, almost give them away there, and it's a nice run, and not difficult but you dismissed it out of hand when I suggested it before so maybe you have a bit of something against it.

Just looked at the prices & the Belgians now have same price for tobby as here in Spain , wheras it used t be half the cost of here.
Might as well buy them here. France price is even dearer.

There you are chaser. 200 no good to me !!! Mind you there half the price of uk in Spain. I may just get them from here!! Xx. Cheers dude!! Xx

Best way.

He doesn't like anything that looks like a hill.:D

The cost was £45 one way but I took for an extra £21 quid a flexi ticket, which allows me up to 36 hrs of travell change either before or after!!

I'm still umming and arring about route but I think I will go from here straight through Spain and into France from the top!! Then I will have a meander thru top of France,, I know I won't see France properly this way, but for my first look I'm sure it will be ok !!

Only priority for me is. Duel carriageway over those bloody mountains from Spain to France!!

Xxxx.

have they reduced the flexi time to 36 hours now as it used to be 72 ?
If you need to use it just turn up , don't ring. If you ring & ask to get on an earlier one they will charge you the difference between what was paid & going rate .
I'd go up & cross at 'La Jonquera' then left at 'Beziers' which'll take you over the Millau bridge but you'll not be able to see down from on it anyway & even better if you go over at night. + apart from the 8,90@ for the bridge the route is foc all the way up to 'Orlean' & around via Chartres,Dreux & Evereux to Rouen.
Then on to Abbeville.

No. But they are way cheap in Belgium at adenkirk as scousebird says - easy peasy to find and only about 20 mins from Dunkirk

Unfortunately there is . Over 800 , 4 cartons always used to require an export licence . Used to be the favourite pull at Malaga airport for the customs.
That's why it isn't worth going in to Andorra if you have loaded up with fags here as you are guaranteed a pull exiting into France or Spain.

According to that Belgian price list posted earlier tobbaco is cheaper here. Don't know about the fags though.

ian get ya smokes in beni mate, its not worth looking around for the shops in belguim, never buy in france to expensive bring back what you like, have fun

Ok so after putting sat nav coords into tomtom for Dunkirk ferry port it shows ( without toll roads) a distance of some 23/24 hrs,, now I can imagine that would be in a Ferrari with the stig at the wheel and no breaks!! However I put in no tolls just so I could see a bit more,,, now I didn't think that was bad. But I have to split that over 6/9 days so that may be a nice little trip ?????

I'm going to save a good look at France for a later date, my next trip!!

I will if I can, start my next trip in sept/ oct if possible, but that entirely relies on my finding and getting enough work to top the money up again !!

Now this trip has been amazing and I'm not going to complete my thoughts here but I want to touch on the money I have spent, this time !!

I have not kept an expense sheet or set of accounts for this trip, so the best I can do is look at bank balance now and balance as was before the trip !!

Now I have sent an amount of money to my daughter, and I earned 1200 euros from Jo baker in tortosa,,( which I spent on tools) lol.

So I started my trip with £28,650 available funds !!!! Now if I take jo's money and use that as funds for my daughter, donated lol. That cancels that out,,,,,

So as I look this afternoon, my balance stands at £ 19,210 So I have spent, so far approx £9.000 ......

Now I have still got to get home and I reckon another £1.000 should do that !!

So I reckon a trip of just over 4 months will have cost me around £10.000 ( a nice round figure) if someone wants to work out on a weekly basis, please do !!
now the £28,650 is the total I had in uk, so expenses such as ferry to Bilbao is included, diesel in uk to get there also !!

So ,, diesel,, food,, sevice to helga,, table chairs, some clothes, boots(e160)
Pitch fees,,, phone with internet incl,,site internet where extra,, cigarettes , all sundries( cleaning stuff etc). Hotel, transport, entrance fees, Beer !!!!!

Now I don't think It's too bad considering I came away quickly with absolutely no idea whatsoever! But when I consider what I know now, I think I could do Spain for the winter next year, if I stayed on one site etc sorted Internet etc for prob half the price ?? Ok what do you think ??? Xxxx

£2,250 a month!
Yep, I think you could trim that a lot! Or I hope so, or I won't be able to afford my retirement plans!

I like the sound of Morocco for less than a fiver a night!

Is that what it is? Well I know when I went to the cities I spent loads, about £1000 in Cadiz for a few days!!
And I won't do the cities again over a winter, so I reckon with Granada, Seville, Cadiz, Jerez, and a couple of other places that I remember costing prob £3,000 there's a great saving there!!! This winter I would like to think I could budget about 1300 per month??
£1300 that is. So a better euro budget!!

Oh I must have spent £400 on golf !! Lol

Blimey there must have been a good beer and fags and entertainment budget !!!!

Sounds about right to me, paying for sites and he has done a lot of driving about, but he'll find it a lot cheaper in France , on Aires but the traveling will be a bit dearer.
But he could have saved a bit on this trip if he'd stayed put a bit, but that's not he went for , he went to see Spain and he has.
But saying that I'm afraid I have to be the wet blanket again, he has made quite a hole in his savings and he will have to get some sort of work:(
And he still has to pay to live when he gets back, not easy, he's planning on going back in September, that's only five months to find a job and do it, can you make 10 grand profit in five months.

Hotel and drink and food and clothes !! I took 1500 euros with me and came back with 340 or something!! But I had an awesome time!! Lol. That's it now. I'm not explaining anymore about spending, lol. I didn't come this time to save money!! But I will tell you this !!! When I was in Jerez I was talking to a couple of people who were not doing particularly well ! ( I did post about them ). And I will tell you that I was quite generous to them, because I thought they could do with a good turn !!! I will not however post on here what I did, but it still makes me feel good about myself everyday!! Xxx ( but I spent more than in Cadiz) lol.

Ian , I wasn't judging you, you do what you like, was just commenting on your post, it just seemed a lot to spend in one town, it was your post about money , no one asked you and I agreed with you that this trip was not about how much it cost.

Ian, Husband keeps a spreadsheet of costs on each of our long trips. Our last trip was for 9.1/2 weeks through Spain and France. Apart from a couple of nights on Aires we stayed on sites. We moved sites a lot (well, we were touring) apart from staying 2 weeks at Pinar (loved it!). The ferry to Santander and back via Zeebrugge/Hull cost quite a packet. He doesn't include booze or fags or food in the spreadsheet, but we don't drink a lot and only eat out maybe once a week. It did include 200 euros for car hire and a Gibraltar tour. Our last trip worked out at £35 per day (and that's for 2 of us). So on that basis you could do a 4 month trip for <£4,500, and even cheaper if you don't use overnight ferries.

Campa, please don't get the idea I was moaning about what I spent!! I started off this journey with more than I thought I would have, and because of that I'm going home with more than I'd planned or thought I'd have!! Enough to treat helga to a few bits,, I will post and ask what I need and ask where to go when I get closer to uk mate !!

And I know it sounds like a lot mate but it was and has been a complete drawn line under my previous life, and I will be going home in a much more positive frame of mind, allowing me to be more relaxed and with more purpose than I have had in years mate,, it's changed me and my life!!! If I had more money. I would have spent and donated a lot more to those less fortunate!!!! Xx

Cheaper still if you use more Aires , we useualy are pretty much like you, but do useualy have one meal a day out, but not necessarily dear ones, we reckon to try and keep within £1000 a month

Should have said that's not including tunnel and diesel, and in fact tolls

Well Ian that's what it is about, I can relate to that. Motorhoming and travel did the same for me (y)

I just had a thought!! When I get home on 29 th April ( God willing) I will be landing in Dover!! Now I'm supposed to be in Essex for a mates birthday on 30 th. But I don't want to go there on 29 th. ( he's not expecting to be there) so if anyone can let me know where I can stay in Dover,, site etc,, or outside. Then that would be handy!! Cheers. Xx

Yes, I am probably doing around the same amount......hopefully will get onto some free/cheap Aires in Germany and will be availing myself of the pukka everyman's right to roam (park) up north in Scandinavia. Very much kept to paid Aires and campsites in Portuguese & Spanish & French cities and on the South of the French coast. (But a good hit rate on free aires otherwise) Far Too many dodgemeisters around for me to get a good night's sleep wild camping in cities and on the French Côte d'Azur.

To us Ian, that is a fortune, we spent a little more than your monthly outgoings over the four months we were away, that included campsite fees, hiring a car for 9 weeks and eating out quite a bit. Having said that, we are experienced travellers and this is your first trip and you have been treating it as a holiday, and rightly so, which you deserved following the few harrowing months you had prior to leaving.

In order to continue travelling you need to get into a mindset that this is a new way of life and is not a holiday. Of course you can treat yourself as you would do in everyday life, but there has to be a limit.

You will of course gain experience as you go along as we all have over the years, it takes a while to get into that new way of life and would of course get much easier when you have found the right travelling companion to share your experiences with when the time is right.

The more you pull your horns in the more you can spend time travelling or not having to work so long or hard in order to bump up the bank balance.

We'll be at Jaws meet too, so can catch up on a lot then. Safe travels back to Blighty.

NP&Z (we class ourselves as FLT's (free loading travellers by the way). It means we don't pay when we don't have to).

Couldn't have put it better(y) what I have been trying to get over from the start but always get misunderstood:(

I love the way you wear your heart on your sleeve!
You may seem to have spent more than you should but what price can you put on a wonderful life experience! If you were living permanently in Spain you would have probably budgeted more . As this was a life changing experience it is money well spent!! And I wish I could do it!!:sun:
