Fiat 9 speed auto recall notice issued

Dropped into my local Fiat Professional dealer in Sandycroft Deeside (Pentagon Group) they weren’t interesting in doing the updates unless I could show them a letter from Fiat telling me to have the update - I showed them the alert from the My Fiat website but they insisted that this was just generic, and loads of people have been quoting this, they said they would need the letter in order for them to get paid and the other side of it is that if they did an update that wasn’t required and if it damaged the gearbox, they would be liable - I explained all the details including how it affects the 9 speed and my 160 Bhp but to no avail - they did say that they will call head office on `Monday and speak to the person who manages warranty and call me back, I won’t hold me breath though 🙄
I did say that I will be going to Scotland and back at Christmas and if there is a gearbox software update - I would be unhappy to do this without the update being carried out
If you gave them your vehicle’s VIN surely the Fiat system will confirm or otherwise.

i.e. Doesn’t care, lazy and can’t be arsed to find out. I would look for a better informed dealer.

Appreciate the reply’s, and I agree with all of them, what makes it worse is that it has been serviced at this dealer a few weeks ago so they are familiar with it and it’s in their system including the VIN number, they did bring it up on the system but didn’t mention whether it said that it needed the update (I’m the other side of the counter so I can’t see what it says)

I suppose you could try contacting FIAT Professional Customer Care and ask them. An email from them should be confirmation enough? A few weeks ago I had an 'out of warranty' claim resolved in my favour by the customer care team, they emailed my dealer confirming they would cover the cost of repair.

Lenny333 how do you find Motorvogue Fiat Professional Norwich ? I used to use the Kings Lynn branch when I had my PVC but the parking and workshop is all a little tight/restricted and now I have a winder and higher vehicle I’m wondering if Norwich is a better option, I also need the update so any feed back would be appreciated

Hi VWDrooper,

I only picked our van up in July so this will be the first time that I have used Motorvogue when I take it for the update.

They did ask if our van was over 7m long or 3m high when I booked it in as that’s all their ramps could handle but don’t yet know about their parking etc.

Hope that helps.

Definitely wouldn’t wait for them to phone you back. Phone them. I’m another one who just phoned Adams Morey Southampton on the basis of this thread, gave the reg number, didn’t even need the VIN. She just checked online and was most apologetic she couldn’t fit me in before the 4th December!

Thanks Lenny333, I’m over 3m high so sounds like they wont be able to do anything that requires going on the ramp but guess a plug in for software update should be fine, let me know how you get on

Soooo. After 4500 miles in our 4month old Arto and 9 days into our 15 day trip to Belgium, we are just finalising our / its repatriation to UK due to a gearbox issue rendering the van undrivable. Fiat assistance have been seriously worse than useless and wanted to charge us £750 to have the van delivered home plus we have to find our own way, despite the fact we didn’t take them up on offers of hire cars or hotels, their computer simply says nooooo…. So have gone through insurance and breakdown cover which may take up to 18 days to get van back to our home (where we need to empty it plus don’t have a garage to book it into yet) and just arranging our own trip home via Eurostar….. hearing horror stories of taking 2 months to get these type of issues fixed once in garage.. hey ho as long as it’s ready for late jan….
But doesn't say anything about the issue or if it manual (though likely auto)?

In the comments the owner confirms its an auto.

There is also an example of a nanual slave cylinder failure at very low miles but simpler repair and I imagine it is possible to get it to move.

Fiat Camper Assist includes recovery to the nearest authorised service centre. Repatriation is covered if the vehicle is still at a standstill after 5 days. For the first 5 days they will pay for hotel and hire car. Seems reasonable to me.

If the owner was demanding immediate repatriation then it is not covered. My personal experience of a few years ago was that Fiat Assist was perfectly happy to recover my motorhome from where it broke down in Norfolk to Adams Morey in Portsmouth, probably cheaper than hotel and hire car but there were several nearer Fiat Professionals.

From the owner of the stranded a N&B Arto
On this trip it started jumping out of cruise and like it was losing power before all warning lights started flashing, injector lights followed by red auto transmission failure then yellow gearbox oil too hot- then 2nd n 3rd lights go out and first one remains but drive loses power and is jerky then 2nd n 3rd lights back again.

So..
Our recall completed this morning. ( 160HP Model)
We drove an hour there, took an hour, drove an hour home.
Did we notice a difference..Not at all!
Feels identical. We never felt we had an issue and was always happy previously.
Glad its done.
( was offered a discounted winter service "Gold" at £699..politely declined.

Well there is a surprise - no phone call from them on Monday as they told me, sort of knew that they wouldn’t really phone me as they said they would

I’ve send an email to Fiat Customer service with all the detail so I’m hoping for some sort of reply from this route
For those suggesting to call the Fiat Professional dealer, tried this last week when I found out about the update but nobody was picking up the calls (probably tried 10 times)

I most certainly won’t be letting this drop and I do have the name of the person who was quite unhelpful and as it happens he is the service manager, who by the way put a post on the Ducato FB page some while back trying to drum up business, so Im just letting this route with customer services run its course before I return to the dealer and let them have both barrels (nicely of course)

Would be easier to go to a dealer who knows what they are doing rather than use one that hasn't a clue.

A slight thread drift.

My VW Caddy van was built in the affected emissions “cheat” dates.

I was contacted by the RAC who was dealing with the ECU updates.
They listed all the items that they would cover if they went wrong in the near future due to the update.

A mate of mine is a spanner monkey and he said don’t get the update.
Apparently there had been numerous failures after the update.

I declined the update as the van was “happy” as it was.

I have a deep distrust of manufacturers.

Hope no problems occur after Fiat have “fiddled” with this update.

Hi Clemmo is yours a 2.2 or a 2.3 engine? May I ask what year it is ? Mine is a 2021 and fiat tell me there is no recall on mine ??
Thank you

Ours was booked in this morning with our local Fiat Professional garage for the software update.
After waiting for an hour and a half we were advised that the update had got to 85% and then crashed so it would need to be restarted. 15 mins later we were advised that after the software update crashing the van now wouldn’t talk to the updating computer at all and that the van actually wouldn’t start 😳.
A ticket has been raised with Fiat.
At least we were given a lift home! Now waiting to see what transpires getting the update to install.

Meanwhile, automotive companies are trying to convince us that they are really good at IT and apps and they are incorporating safety critical smart control systems into their vehicles. Yet they can't even do a software update.

What a pain, sorry to hear this, hope it gets sorted quickly 🙄

Does anyone know when this update was caught prior to MH production . We are in the throws of buying a brand new van on a fiat 2.2 180bhp with the 9 speed box . It’s a 2024 model hence I am concerned it may be affected . Do you think this may have the same issue . . The chassis could have been siting around at the manufacturer for months I guess therefore still be one that is in need of the update . ?
