Doc on tour, France, Spain, Morroco.

Tam...thank your lucky stars you were not in Norway...when our Alternator and tensioner failed..we were in a remote location and on a garage parking for 5 nights waiting for parts to arrive....we finally left van fixed and 2000€ lighter...we even had to pay 140€ carriage to have the old Alternator returned...
So what you have paid is peanuts...🤔👍

He would be out of business if he didn’t,we are happy with the deal we got. 😎
Right

And if I didn't make a profit when I sold motors I'd be skint.

So why doesn't it bother you when a big business makes a shilling. But it does when I do?

All the folk who've bought my motors were happy with the deal they got too.

End of the day and this conversation hopefully as its getting boring .

If I was to sell this van it would be for the price I decided it was worth to me , and the buyer would be someone that decided it was worth that price to them .

But it would never be for less than it owes me or it wouldn't be getting sold. They'd just get told to find another one. 😁

I bought a pair of boots in decathlon today that are the same price in UK.

Whilst I appreciate prices can vary a little between countries I don't believe there is any justification for a part being more than twice the price.

I just don't, and I never will no matter how many people think there is 🤷‍♂️

IF I was confident I could drive to Spain before this packed in altogether that's what I would have done. The only reason I'm buying the part here is because I have little choice.
You've just said it, it's cheaper in Spain as their wages and costs are lower, probably even cheaper in Portugal where minimum wage is peanuts and even more so in Morocco seems we are middle in UK. Not saying the Iveco person offered you a discount Pierre would of got but in general things are more expensive in france.

Apples and pears though Martin. I've been unfortunate enough to have those issues too , I did the right thing getting the cambelt etc changed on my hymer only for the other belt to snap on route to the tunnel and break the pulleys etc causing me to need recovered and the same money plus more to be spent again to fix it.

This current issue is just me again trying to avoid a bigger issue down the road. ...so I'm not at the mercy of a French garage.

Hopefully it goes smooth 😁

With labour I can understand that

But my point was the cost of the part
It is manufactured in France how can it possibly be shipped to another country and sold there for less than it is sold in the country its manufactured in if it isn't just an inflated price. 🤷‍♂️

It's markets and what they will stand, I always wonder how they can ship a pineapple half way round the world and sell it in Asda for 79p or how a cantaloupe melon is £2 in Asda but double in france where they are grown?

It's called business and something I'll never understand, example....
Years ago I had dealt with a woodworking tool making company for years and decided I needed a new Morticing machine, after calling them old customer etc cost from them was £1900 plus £50 delivery.
I explained that I could buy it from another company for £1200 and I had never bought anything from this company before, they answered yes that company are amazing we can't match their price.
I said but you make the machine and sell it to them, they must be making a profit so how much are you selling it to them for?
I ended up buying it from this other company during payment the lady said yes it's Free delivery but sorry it will be a 48hr delivery not 24hr because it will come straight from the manufacturers.
I'll never make a business man!!!!!!

I told him about some good prices on t-shirts while in Cornwall and he bought a load of them and blamed me later…😆🤣

Anyone can talk about any subject for as long as they like on my thread if they want, as long as it not about cheese and crackers cause Tam eats them all the time….😎
So he really is the inspiration for Wallace and Gromett or was it Wallet and Grimace?

Not viable after brexit, would be classed as an import into France 😡
Like many people living in the EU we have stopped ordering from companies in the UK. We have had to ask family 'to stop' sending us things 'we might like' as it now costs roughly the same again in Import Duty.

In every town in France there is a Scrapyard and that is where the majority of French look/shop for replacement parts. Used to be the same in the UK in the sixties when you could still repair on 'old Banger' on a budget - my split screen VW cost me £15 to buy and was held together with bailing wire.

I'm hoping so as I also need an indicator/sidelight stalk and I ain't paying the crazy price for that lol

Because they can, simple as that Tam

It’s called greed and since Covid and B a lot are just jumping on the bandwagon and being bloody greedy imho

Prices are getting out of control just because of greed

Example, a friend of mine has a wholesale fish business, he tells me that fish for him to buy and sell is cheaper than it was before Covid and B yet the retailers/restaurant/supermarkets are charging stupid prices to customers because they can

Anyway that’s it for me, end of conversation let’s get back to fixing Doc

I updated my Alde heating controller last year. At the time they were hard to get with every place saying due in two months etc. The one place that had them had upped the price by £50 because they could and knew they were the only place that had them. It’s business. What you do if you knew you were the only one that had something that others wanted.

Right part collected at 10.20 , back to carpark , old one stripped off new one fitted , I was washing me hands by 11.20
Hardest part was stopping the bleeding bonnet from closing on me constantly and feeding the bottom bracket and hose Down between engine and bodywork. But all In all a very easy job to do.

Pedal sorted good to go .

You don't appear to understand the business model.
e.g. If it cost the company say £10 to manufacture a part and they sell it for £30 to cover cost/profit/development etc. It is then sold to a distributor who in France because of the high employment cost puts an 80% mark up on it selling to a wholesaler who puts a similar mark up on, it is then sold to the final purchaser, so final price is £97.2 +VAT = £116.64

Now if the same item is sold in the UK, distributors & wholesalers often work on 50% (as employment costs are less) so the final price would be £67.50 +VAT = £81.

That was weird...I got locked out my own thread there for a bit .. couldn't access anything. I sent a message off to Jim

Not sure if it fixed itself or he did it.

Seems OK now.
Strange - I was locked out of your thread too! OK now.

Tam, but the bag is in English. Are you sure it's a French part or have they been reading this thread and decided to bend you over and charge more??

Anyhoo, you are fixed now; well done.

Get yer arse in gear and more stories and pics of your travels please. You can include cheese, food, wotever will keep the masses reading.

Inspiring.
