A few from the Midi-Pyrenees;

Conques overview 2.jpg

Looking down on Conques. If you want to explore a medieval bastide town then Conques is one of the best. It is quite a steep walk up from the camp site though.

La Couvertoirade Castle.jpg

La Couvertoirade Templars Gravestone.jpg

The Castle at La Couvertoirade, another bastide town.Tthis one was a Knights Templar's Commanderie and the gravestone dated from the 13th century is for one of the Templars.

St Eulalie d'Olt river.jpg

St Eulalie d'Olt. Lovely little town and has a very nice restaurant.

New use for a damaged Trug.

We were going to have Cumberland sausage tonight for our tea and because we like it slow cooked, it tends to make a lingering smell in the house (or MH ) so we decided to do it outside on our single burner canister gas cooker.

Bit breezy so came up with this idea to use a broken Trug. Cut it to about 6" deep and made it an open ring so it fit round the cooker as a windbreak.

Worked a treat! Made sure it didn't represent a fire risk - didn't even get warm

What's a Trug?

Later today I will be riding behind this locomotive. I spent a while chatting with the crew.

I was surprised by the appearance of Mary Poppins who had travelled up on the diesel service with a party of mature people (even more mature than myself). They were to join the steam service and were geared up for a piqueniqe (doubtless with an apèro or two)

She made me smile! I had never seen the film until a friend insisted I see it sometime in I think 2011. I had accompanied her to see "Saving Mr Banks". I can't remember which I saw first but the later film made the first necessary.

Off for lunch now, my train is not until 1605 by which time I am sure Mary Poppins will be long gone!

Was that down by the millrace at Stead McAlpine Graeme ?

Got it in one Barry ! The course of the river has changed dramatically over the last winter just downstream of the old dam. Where it used to flow against the high wooded bank, it now splits in two and must stop 70 yards short of it's old course where it scoured away the bank, revealing lots of bullets as that was the back stop of the old rifle range. We picked up quite a few Martini Henry .577/450 rounds in amongst the clay and I found the base of a Martini Henry rolled brass cartridge case, the exact same type as used at Rorke's Drift, just above the millrace as that was where one set of firing positions was located.

I got quite dirty on my ride this afternoon. 1st picture is of my driver monitoring the uplift of water during preparation for duty.

Next was taken inside the office where the fireman is attending to the fire. Rather warm in the office.

Lastly the less glorious side of running the railway. Sorting coal for the next day having just filled the bunker. The engine then being put to bed for the morning.

Now I am going for a shower as I am like the coal. A great day!

Oh, it has been a beautiful day down here in Charente-Maritime.

They're for for the lumberjack competition at next weeks Cumberland Show.
There should be just over 20 metres of tree sticking out for them to race up !

Been twice to Melrose already this year. Always feel at home there.

....
When I get back to QMJ, I will ink out all the red...

JJ
Torro make good cases, I got the same colour for my iPhone X a few weeks ago and went for the red as I liked the contrast. You could have gone for one of their plain cases and saved ink, or do you like 'colouring in' ?

Thanks:

Nikon d700 and Nikon 400mm 2.8
