What have you fixed on your motorhome this week?

Have you fitted it yet?
Bill

Yes, Bill, we did it last week. Of course, none of the catches were in the same place but we made it fit. Quite easy otherwise :-)

Just got to work out why the trim at the top of the 'glass' has moved a quarter of an inch and how to get it back so we can fit the end stops.

Just Ben doing sum work on the heating ducting after getting in from work.
Ther was sum bits that we're leeking air
But the furthes vents from the fan don't seem to be producing much air was wondering would computer fans help the air flow

Had the Carver Cascade water heater module out last week, the DIN plug to the controller was not making good contact with the controller board socket, so I squeezed the socket contact halves together a bit with a fine pair of pliers and that did the job.

The thermal pad that protects the thin aluminium outer panel had broken up and pieces were laying on the burner, so a panel from a spare heater with a good pad was fitted.

That all worked well over the weekend when we took the Ruston engine to the Lincoln Steam Rally.

Just under 11 litres of gas for everything for 4 days.

If you still need that capacitor changing, drop it in the post to us and I'll see what we can do, we carry a big range of radial capacitors for our own electronics manufacturing.

My garage advised me that there have been a lot of catalytic convertor thefts in our area and advised me to fit a lock to it.

So I bought a CATLOC and fitted it yesterday. Basically its a very hard stainless steel cage that you fix around the cat and do up with bolts and the hex part of the nut shears off so that there is nothing that can be undone. A hard chain is then used to fix the cage to the exhaust bracket which are all fixed with shear off hex head nuts. Stickers to go on the windows and also the cat code is etched into the cat for traceability should it be stolen. You register the cat code with ISR. (International Security Register). Its just another delaying tactic and hopefully because yours is more difficult you hope the thieves will move on to find an easier one to pinch.

The roof vent over the rear fixed bed had been getting a bit of a sod to close.
Told Woman not to open it while away last month but she who knows best opened it anyway
Of course she tried to close it but only succeeded in damaging the winding mechanism !
Was gonna replace the whole thing with a mini heki but when we got home Sunday afternoon discovered that the left hand window in the overhead ( the cave ! ) had decided to make its own way in the world and parted company somewhere between Shell Island and Thetford..

A quick check and a price of around £190 for a replacement forced me to rethink the heki replacement !!

Striped the existing Autotrail P O S right down and found the actuating worms were caked in rust, there was NO grease in the winding mechanism its self, and one of the cogs was buggered
Tore it all right down to its component parts, cleaned off the caked rust and used ACF50 to lube ( and prevent rust return ) on the worms and guide tubes
The buggered gear I did a recut on and then packed the plastic mount to force the sides in so the recut gear made half decent contact with the other bits.

Put it all back together and it is working better than any other time since we took ownership of the van !

Yesterday I popped over to Wisbech to Rainbow Conversions and picked up the replacement window ( a Seitz ( SP? ) ) for the over head.
If you buy just the actual window it is £187 and takes 8 to 12 weeks to arrive.. I paid the £195 for the complete unit and fitted the window to the existing frame in less than 10 minutes .. So if anyone wants a 500 x 300 mm ( Window size, external measurement 540 x 330 mm ) brand new Seitz frame complete with roller blind and fly screen, gimme a shout.. I have a spare !!

repalced the magnetic catch for cupboard in toilet and put the toilet roll holder back on, the grub screw works loose with vibration.

Fixed the bumper level reversing camera and also 2 new leisure batteries

When we got home from our last trip, I found the 12v electrics would only work when connected to the mains. After a lot of searching around and poking with a multimeter, I eventually found an inline 25A fuse in the battery box wiring which was quite well hidden. The leisure battery voltage was only 4 volts so suspected a battery/charging issue may have blown the fuse. We're off to France at the weekend so I don't have much time to investigate further so I've replaced the battery anyway and with fresh fuses, it "seems" ok. I'll test the old battery more when we get home and if it's ok, might look to fitting it as an additional battery.

New heater fitted, cost loads but at least it now works on Leccy as well as diesel!

Had a spare 5metre LED string (bought the wrong non waterproof one for fixing to the awning ), so after @peterc10 showed me his very posh Hymer lighting (it may have been @icantremember ......I can't remember. Both posh Hymer drivers anyway) spent a rewarding hour fixing it to the front and side of the drop down bed. Wired into the existing light circuit and.......voilà!

I can now sit in my cheap and nasty Pilote and pretend I'm a posh Hymer owner........... :D

Fully dimmable, it casts a lovely warm light over the front of the van seating area. Total cost was about a tenner, but it was spare stuff - used almost all the 5 metres

VW T4 owners will know that the door pocket 'drinks holders', although just adequate for a can, struggle to hold a typical hot drink coffee cup without risk of the lid popping off. Looked at different drinks holders and tried to source one of those foam cut out types that were popular during the nineties that just stuck on the dash, no luck. Then found this, a custom made for T4 drinks holder with an additional pot, that just drops into a T4 dash on the passenger side. I can comfortably reach my drink that is held securely. Its the little things like this, that when they get fixed, please the most!

Drained water system flushed everything out & refilled with anti freeze & distilled water.

I didn't fix it but the clever Mike of @quickwey fixed my fridge vent grill ... Thank you. :)

Not so much fixed as finally sorted this week

Lift up flap at end of kitchen unit for more workspace - think the newer Adria Twins have this or a pull out version of it fitted as standard.

500w pure sine wave inverter fitted - to further our quest to be off grid spoon whittlers. Thanks to @chippy63 for his views on the renytek inverter.

Proplate lock protection plates fitted.

Both cab 12v sockets split to give 4 sockets in total - the extra ones fitted in the glove box and by the small passenger side dash shelf (also replaced the existing two for ones that actually keep the plugs plugged in). Massive thanks to @Techno for his posts on this subject.

Thermal blackout curtain made from leftover curtain lining fabric to separate cab area from living area for extra winter warmth.

New mifi unit up and running with 3 sim - made a little protective bag for it and its aerial out of leftover fleece.

Mega big levelling ramps made out off leftover wood for our sloping gravel drive so that I can get the fridge cold and loaded the day before we head off rather than rushing the morning that we head off.

Phew - I think that's it for the time being.

Fixed my site neighbours Omnivent lifting mechanism. Assembled dry by the factory (alloy worm operates toothed alloy quadrant) so became stiff then eventually impossible to operate. A blob of grease was a total cure but required dismantling of the lift mechanism to place it where needed. One happy neighbour. His caravan was new this year.

looked at the headlights on the 2008 van i was selling saturday morning as I washed it. Since i bought it, there had been acrylic headlight protectors fitted. on removing the covers the headlight plastic had gone cloudy. 10 minutes per side with some brasso and a cloth and they were crystal clear again. finished off with a light coat of wax and they are like new

Could I use brasso on my mh windows do you think? They scratched from bushes and trees.

some folk argue that it damages the surface but I have used it on many motorhome/caravan windows to remove light scratches successfully. deep scores need different treatment and if too bad replacement is the only option if you cant live with the unsightly scratches

The brasso works as a very light cutting compound but it needs cleaning off well as you go along so you dont allow the ammonia time to cause a problem. work on a very small area at a time and rub in a circular motion over the scratch or cloudy part. wash the window or headlight well afterwards and give a coat of wax to protect the surface

Just fitted a new lip seal to the Cassette

Don't use Brasso it has ammonia in it that WILL damage your windows. Meguiars PlastX is what you need, it's formulated to do the job.

any idea what the abrasive is in plastx? years ago I was given a small tub of pumice powder for use on glass screens. worked brilliantly but long since used up

Not fixed yet but yesterday discovered a crack in the plastic around the shower mixer.

I shall take the panel off tomorrow and patch it on the back with glassfibre matting.
