What’s up North worth seeing?

Beware the weather
(apparently)
other than that it’s a fab place with castles, cities, towns, seaside and everything ??

The places you list are in the Midlands. North is further North. The centre of the UK is Haltwhistle in Northumberland. Scotland isn't a little wild spot stuck at the top of the UK - it's close to half of the country. :D
no one counts scotland when we say north we mean north of england

Reading you're opening post I think you're taking the piss.
For a start, you aren't in the North, you're barely in the Midlands.
We eat off crockery using cutlery like the southern softies.
The food is the same but we draw the line at jellied eels.
We have tarmac on our roads.... And footpaths.
Pretty much like the south but we take the time to say hello to strangers.
Oh, and our beer comes with froth on top like it's supposed to.

I’m a born and bred northerner but I went to uni down south. Managed to persuade one of my friends who had never been ‘oop north’ that we still took bath ‘in tub’ and used candles for lighting. Bless.

We are travelling up North to collect our new motorhome, will be visiting exciting places such as Grantham, Sherwood Forest (got ideas from a forum member for there ?), Chesterfield, Doncaster then we wanted to see a famous northern seaside town so going to a place called Cleethorpes for fish and chips and an ice cream, then Lincoln before stopping in Nottingham en Route back to the safety of London ?

Some basic questions:
Is it cold in these places, do we need thermal clothing, coats etc
Are people easy to understand or do you need to listen carefully and speak slowly
Are people friendly up there
Do they accept debit cards or do we need to take cash
Is it safer than London
Are the roads narrow
What are their driving standards like
What type of food do they eat, I take all my own to France, wondered if I should take my own this time, I heard they fry everything even mars bars ?
Can you drink the water
Any recommendations for things to see and do, only having a day in each place to test the van out before driving back to London, if there are any issues it will be going back to the dealer on the way back to London

Thanks ?
One of the things I must warn you about is that the people up North generally have an aversion to smug patronising sarcastic Southerners. So it may be best to steer clear and head back to the safety of the South.

BTW from my extensive research my answers to your questions are as follows in red.

Is it cold in these places, no do we need thermal clothing, coats etc you do, the locals don't
Are people easy to understand or do you need to listen carefully and speak slowly They love it when you shout loud at them when they don't understand what you say. Try it in some pubs
Are people friendly up there yes, but see the first part of my post for exceptions
Do they accept debit cards or do we need to take cash most don't use either, they have contactless credit cards and smartphones to pay because they live in the 21st century
Is it safer than London usually, but again but see the first part of my post for exceptions
Are the roads narrow They have things called motorways on which traffic often runs freely, unlike the similarly named roads in the the south
What are their driving standards like Much better than Londoners. They even smile and let people out of junctions
What type of food do they eat, I take all my own to France, wondered if I should take my own this time, I heard they fry everything even mars bars ?Put it this way, most people are not daft enough to take all their own food to France.
Can you drink the water yes, but not their beer

I am a Northener and resent any criticism of living standards away from London. To prove my point I attach a photo of my loving family happy in our home where I'm sure you can see the quality of life is every bit as good as anywhere in the south.

That looks very much like the home I grew up in, in London in the 50s

Cleethorpes?????
Don’t stop in Sherwood Forest........ it’s full of Robbers ??

Another point. If it’s -3 degrees, don’t wear a coat.....
We can spot spot “southern shandy swigging faggots” miles off ???
Obviously only joking.....
You can’t beat York for a day out, park and ride is best, numerous ones to choose from. “Be rate it will” ??

"The North".......

Observe the M1 signage on the way up, it says "The North" where as when you're heading down afterwards it's just says "South"....

Very GoT

My god ?. SO much to learn in 2 days, have seen some of the pictures and it is pretty much how I expected, my point about the size of roads is if I veer of the A1 would I still be able to get my van past the sheds, it seems people just hang about in the streets / alleys. Anyway it’s going to be a true adventure, I could maybe do a blob about it ?

Thank you all SO much for your help, my wife is not going to understand me at supper tonight when I practice my northern ?.

THANKS ?

I just went out and bought a ratchet strap for the front doors a hint I found reading another thread, probably travelled up north as well. I can’t take the shotgun as I don’t have a safe fitted yet, so will get all the alarms activated, if I hear anything I can always send my wife out to check ?

When we go to the Caribbean we take pens, pencils, note books and the likes to hand out to kids up in the hills, any idea what northern kids like, the picture of them all in one room looks awful, what about woolly hats and scarves?

Don't be bl**dy ridiculous! They'll look stupid playing in the snow and wearing woolly hats and scarves with their swimsuits.

If you venture up our way you may well be introduced to babbys yed and chips wet :giggle:

You won't have any problems with the language as we all speak English, last time I was in London I found it hard to find another English person who could speak in our native tongue.
Are there any locals still living in London???

Dont bother with the pencils and note pads, northern kids dont learn to read till they are in their teens. Up to then they are too busy driving tractors and cleaning chimneys.

Make sure you wear your body armour when you venture North of that slum of a place, I think your going to need it

What do you get up north - Rain, rain and more rain.
I spent the famous summer of '76 living near Rochdale. The locals were wining about how hot and dry it was, poor deluded fools it was like a normal summer to us.

And then there's Wakes week everyone buggers off to Scarborough all the shops close and you starve.

Anything north of Dorking is the exstream north to me.

This might help. At least it will in Wigan but you'll need one for each town up here:
