What’s up North worth seeing?

I think you need to get ready well in advance of your tip. Firstly keep the crocs and shorts on open the freezer door and sit in front of ot while spraying yourself with cold water. Secondly the language while you ar acclimatising recite usefull phrases like "I'm nowt but a namby pamby suttherner" and "by eck it freezin". You will also need to replace "I totally agree my dear chap" with "reet" and be prepared to receive change in shops. The third thing is to really fit in with the locals most still wear sherwood green like Robin Hood. You need felt shorts and some green Norah Batty type tights. A small jacket and a green felt hat with a feather in it. I suggest that you wear in on a night out in the centre of my home town of Mansfield and chant support for a few southern softie football clubs as the pubs chuck out I,m sure the locals will make you most welcome and you will feel afterwards how people in that part of the UK feel the south has treated us for years.

I have upgraded the van to have Sat Nav, would it have Yorkshire on it? I did ask them how it got updated and and what charts were on it but the dealer had no idea ?
Most sat navs have Yorkshire deleted. You’ll be routed through gods country ...... Bolton, Preston Blackburn and up over Pendle. Watch out for the witches ?‍♀️

I take it there is power and phone signals up there now?

Not if you're staying at Clumber Park! ?

Well I live near Mansfield? thankfully I wasn't born here! ?

596 I guess you are making your way up the A1 with a few of those towns you've mentioned. Hope you've chosen carefully, there are nice places to stay in those areas but they take a bit of seeking out?

Hope you enjoy your new van & make sure your wife has a go at driving from day 1.

We are travelling up North to collect our new motorhome, will be visiting exciting places such as Grantham, Sherwood Forest (got ideas from a forum member for there ?), Chesterfield, Doncaster then we wanted to see a famous northern seaside town so going to a place called Cleethorpes for fish and chips and an ice cream, then Lincoln before stopping in Nottingham en Route back to the safety of London ?

Some basic questions:
Is it cold in these places, do we need thermal clothing, coats etc
Are people easy to understand or do you need to listen carefully and speak slowly
Are people friendly up there
Do they accept debit cards or do we need to take cash
Is it safer than London
Are the roads narrow
What are their driving standards like
What type of food do they eat, I take all my own to France, wondered if I should take my own this time, I heard they fry everything even mars bars ?
Can you drink the water
Any recommendations for things to see and do, only having a day in each place to test the van out before driving back to London, if there are any issues it will be going back to the dealer on the way back to London

Thanks ?
The places you list are in the Midlands. North is further North. The centre of the UK is Haltwhistle in Northumberland. Scotland isn't a little wild spot stuck at the top of the UK - it's close to half of the country. :D

No phone signal at the C&MC site at Clumber. Oops, just noticed Debs beat me to it).
I do hope that you ordered snow chains with your new purchase?
On a serious note not far from Sherwood Forest is the National Holocaust museum at Ollerton. Worth a visit.

Thanks but problem is I will be driving this great hulk around because my wife isn’t into PVC, you never know after our trip round the north we may want something different. I must get my wife to try driving it but I really don’t believe she ever will, when we go to the South of France she flies, she just doesn’t have the time to potter about she’s an extremely busy woman, this long weekend coming will be the most time I have spent with her for ages, she’s getting the train to Grantham and we will head to the North from there until Sunday. If we end up in that area covered in fleas it will be the last time she goes, bought the flea spray and have mesh screens all around, it would be nice to be able to get out and walk around but will see what the locals look like first ?

You need to be very careful if your planning on walking around!
If you’ve ever seen Game of thrones you know what to expect..........white walkers are nothing compared to us lot! ?

Skegness and Boston are nice places to visit you can even leave your keys in the ignition and leave your van unattended, the locals are very friendly, so much so that they will share everything they have with you, (and accept you will reciprocate likewise). ;)
Enjoy your visit north of Watford. :imoutahere:

Be careful, there's a load of my relies up there (which is why I'm down here). When I moved down sarth, 65 years ago, I got used to those friendly southern phrases like "bloody northerners, taking our jobs". We were the migrants of the day.

I still say "wun" instead of worn (1), but most of my accent disappeared in the school playground in about 3 weeks. Nice kids.

I'd swerve Donnie if I was you, I was borne a near there and I make sure never to go back. Otherwise, I admire your cavalier spirit. Travel broadens the mind. Adventure before ... what's that word?

why not visit Pateley bridge . buy some sweets from the oldest sweetshop in england.
plus its a nice drive in that area.
nothing wrong with donnie , i was born in balby but lived in warmsworth.
donnie is famous for its railway and its race course.
plus its market .
balby ,s got a lovely little church/chapel and opposite is or was the winning post pub . my grandad played piano in there years ago.

you’re spot on, I live near there! 596 please for you’re own safety give Donny a wide berth (unless of course you’re going to SAP then you might be ok for a quick visit??

Try it, then you will feel safe in any other part of the world.

By the way it's too cold for fleas

Never seen a flea when living up North or in Scotland, which is the real up North. But don’t cross the border without haggis protection. Suggest smearing the outside if your van with Marmite, they can’t stand the smell.

Don’t walk around ignoring everyone like southerners. Northerners will speak to you saying things like Eyup. This is a greeting. Bring warm clothing it’s starting to get a bit chilly. Most people speak the same language as you but not all. If you have a problem don’t be afraid if Northern people help you. They are not expecting anything in return. Be aware some of the pavements have handrails at the side to aid climbing the hills. Beer has a head on it and you don’t need to take out a mortgage to buy it. The green stuff on the floor is called grass. Animals eat it. The animals will not hurt you (well they don’t hurt us) they are for eating. Yes that’s where meat comes from. The small woolly ones are called sheep ? and the bigger ones are called cows ? .
I think this should keep you safe . Have a great trip but do remember to go back down south when you have had your holidays. We don’t want southerners moving up here.??

Tip: if you call in at Sheffield, before you speak to anyone you say "now den" first. It's the standard sentence opener and they'll think you're one of them.

Eg. You walk in to pay for fuel "Now den pump No. 2 please" ??

There speaks a southerner ;) It's nah den dee. People from certain areas of this great city are known as dee-dahs as in "Nah den dee, wot dah doin'?"

If you get as far North as Newcastle and need a translator our son is at Uni there and also works in Greggs at the airport where he is teased for his posh Southern accent. He will charge of course. He is accepted as his grandad was a Geordie.
