Unladen weight for speed limit purposes (12 Viewers)

Am I right in think the unladed weight for speed limit purposes is the MIRO, minus the following items?

• Mass of unladen vehicle including tyre mobility system and onboard tool set.
• Driver’s weight allowance of 75kg.
• Fuel tank filled up to 90%.
• 16kg allowance for gas cylinders.
• 20% full fresh water tank and water system.
• 100% full boiler.
• Mains electric cable.

Crazy system but the UK speed limit has nothing to do with the Revenue weight or the Maximum permissible mass. It is based on the unladen weight which is not shown on the V5C.

You are probably not far off with those deductions, not sure about tyre kit and tools. My latest V5C has a Mass in service figure that is less than the required 3050kg so I assume I am ok for the higher speeds. You might get some figures from your Certificate of Conformity.

The unladen weight of a motorhome is, more or less, exactly that.
It can be started but there's bu&&er all fuel in it. There's no water, no gas bottles, no EHU cable, no driver, no management, no food, no essential, (and non essential for that matter) anything in it. Nowt, zilch, NADA.
If? the resultant weight is less than 3050Kgs then you can be with the Ferrari's and do 60mph on single carriageway roads in the UK.

Let me know how you go on emptying the van.

Effectively they can’t tell as the unladen weight is before ANY additional equipment above bog standard vehicle.

MIRO is different from unladen weight.

MIRO (mass in running order) would be the weight it emerged from the converters workshop

Yes it is, but does the dvla have access to that to issue a fine for doing 70 on a dual carriageway instead of 60?

Yep, front floor, chassis legs, bukhead, engine, suspension and wheels.
A lot less than 3050kg

I don't trouble myself with any of that based on the assumption that cameras don't care and the Police aren't interested. I travel wherever I judge it to be safe and sensible at satnav 65 / speedo 70 unless I'm in 20, 30, 40, or 50 in which case I travel at the posted limit. I've done this for 25 motorhoming years in three 3500kg and one 5400kg vehicles including when towing. So far no issues nor do I anticipate any in future.

Depends on what the manufacturer states for MIRO it varies between manufacturers but generally you are right apart from the mains lead that is not included.

I have both the unladen weight & MIRO for my van, the difference is 185kg.

I don’t think so. MIRO is the Mass in service plus 75kg for the weight of driver and other additional weights such as 90% fuel, some water and a gas bottle.

You will prosecuted on plated weight. If you drive a solo lorry tractor unit plated at 44t over 7.5t weight limit, you are prosecuted at 44t even though you have no load or trailer on attached.
