The resurrection of Doc, bringing a 20 year old neismann Bischoff Flair back to life after 12 years off road.

Well as Just smiffy said the genny isn't playing ball , no idea what's up with it.

It wouldn't run, wouldn't suck fuel up , then because we tried it too many times the starter jammed , dropped it back out , freed the starter, took carb off again checked that , removed plug checked that ,wired it back up and it will start it revs up high , panel says generator cal , then generator alert and it goes off again . Output voltage only 10- 25 volts initially, it won't tick over itself now so not sure what's bleeding going on with it. It ran sweet the other day and was putting out 240v . So it has to be something simple but we don't know what. Garry has now lost patience with it , it's annoying me why it worked the other day and not now but it was after 3pm and I needed to leave today or I'd never get up to see dave and marsha before they leave on Friday. So downhearted we put it back in and I got on the road just after 4.

It's all still new driving this van and it's now a case of me building up trust in it and learning all its quirks etc . It drove nice on the way up . I'm parked up for tonight just outside Exeter in an industrial estate , 3 or 4 fulltimer vanlife types parked up here with some interesting rigs.

Van goes up the average motorway incline pretty well it will maintain 60mph , but on the steeper ones I do have to drop down gears and as soon as you do that it loses revs and it won't gain much speed , down to 45,50mph at some points . So I think a remapp is definitely needed. I am probably running at the heaviest I'll ever be as I have scooter rack, cover , extra wheel and tyre in the garage, an almost full tank of water etc. And I've a fair bit of stockpiled food in my extra larder . Cruises nicely otherwise it's just those steeper inclines.

Still a bit paranoid with it at the minute as always expecting something to go wrong and feel a little vulnerable at the minute but hopefully that'll pass over the next week or so..... always the Same when I first get back on the road and I have been at garrys now over 2 months .

Still feels a little hard on the front end , I'm not sure if its a vibration I feel now or if maybe my tyres are just a little too hard ...I have them at 65psi at present so tomorrow morning before I move on I'm going to drop them to 62psi see how that goes and if still feel hard ill try them at 60psi .. it can't hurt and it might make all the difference.

I've had the heat exchanger valve open the whole drive and the good news there is no leaks ....

Now am I right in thinking when that valve is open I don't have to touch anything on the aldi controls to get hot water?

What about heating? Do I need to switch anything on?

Yes, the pump slider to heat & hot water, on the Alde control panel, and adjust the temperature setting to suit. (y) When you reach your destination, you then turn on the gas, or the mains, pending what you are on. :)

Safe travels Tam. (y)

Isn't it cute

Now my question is where do I mount the bloody thing .

I find if they're anywhere near the kitchen everytime you cook it goes off. If I put it towards the front of the van it might not give me a quick enough alert if I was in bed. I don't want it right above my bed either so the only place left is in the bathroom area between the sliding door and the skylight ... the door is closed at night but there is a gap under it.

Thoughts ?

Link to polarsteps for the few weeks round engerland .. might need the occasional pointer of places to visit.

Follow me on my trip ‘Doc out n about ’ at https://www.polarsteps.com/tambrand/14326378-doc-out-n-about?s=310c66fc-f3a3-4459-8810-7ae88789d02c

So we are Going to Malmesbury tomorrow to see dave n marsha then heading in to Wales at weekend ...im tempted to take the van back to gareth to let him see it now its back up to scratch ..then Will be heading up the middle of wales towards brecon meet up with mackeellan...then who knows.. probably cross country cannock, Leicester over towards Norfolk etc .. then down east side and back along bottom towards lennys between now and the 2nd November.

If anyone knows any where that could possibly look at the generator for me on that rough route that would be off interest . Probably get remap guys out next week at somepoint . They're mobile so as long as they're happy meeting me somewhere that isn't an address that should be fine . If not I might have to get them to do it at a campsite or something ( gasp) I'll be phoning head office to arrange but will be getting it done north Wales or Midlands most likely .

If you mount it in the vanity area Tam, steam from the shower may set it off.
Your main risk area is the kitchen, ie cooker and gas fridge freezer, so as a compromise, you could mount it on the end panel to the overhead lockers, nearest the habitation door. That's where I have mounted ours, and I've also got one in the rear garage where the batteries, Sterling B2B charger, and inverter are. I also have a Carbon Monoxide detector for the hab area, which currently sits on that round metal rack above the kitchen bar area.

Two extinguishers on the lower left panel at the Hab door, and one in the garage. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Bedroom for ours. It's not like it's going to be going off for no good reason unless you're planning on having a lie in whilst someone else does the fry up?

It's banging my head on it I'm worried about and it being last minute alert .

I was thinking about this area here . Just inside bathroom .

Or here above toilet etc
20241009_204844.jpg

Or I suppose I could put it between these spotlights in bedroom

It Says not to put it near windows or radiators etc

Fitted ours on the ceiling about a third of the way up the bed, it's optical so shouldn't go off with cooking unless you are into cremations.

My theory is if something goes up and I'm asleep I'll want to know about it.

If you are going to close that door isolating the bedroom I would fit another one in the lounge.

That's why I advised about it being mounted nearer the highest risk area, (without being right over it), giving you the most time to react if/when it does go off. The noise from it will be piercing enough even with the sliding doors closed at night, so no fear of not hearing it. Plus, the dogs will be barking too if it does goes off. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Can't put it near the door though as advised on instructions not to . Also has to be roof mounted

With the generator, when it was out where you using its own fuel tank or a can, if not its own tank maybe there’s a problem with a blockage from that fuel tank.
Glad you’re on the road again , I’m sure you’ll get used to the new van.
I know I’m always listening for odd noises.

I know you enjoyed your time at Gary’s and you both did a great job in getting a lot of things sorted on Doc. But it must feel great to be back on the road now, and you can sort out other things as you go. Doc looks fantastic. Good luck on your travels. 👍

We had it running from a can .. but when we refitted it somehow it wouldn't lift the fuel from the can. So we then tried it from the tank. The tank was being weird ,the fuel wouldn't flow by gravity but the van was on a slope and possibly not enough fuel in it. It would flow if I siphoned it. Anyway we then tried it from both the tank and the can . We also fitted a hose from the pump back to the can and cranked it to see fuel was being pumped and circulating. But then it wouldn't run on its own from either. If garry held the throttle back it would idle for a while but if let throttle go it would rev really fast then cut off with generator alert message on control panel.

Did that a few times , rain was coming, time was getting on and we called it a day. I'm certain it's something simple but it's not something I need right now so can look at it again later. For now it's refitted , exhaust and fuel lines etc all reconnected . So will come back to it later.

Agree with Manic, our Kit car we built had a similar problem turned out the fuel pick-up was too close to base of tank so was getting starved of fuel.
Yours maybe the tank isn’t getting air in to let fuel out!

If you press the test button on the smoke alarm or CO alarm please do it when the dogs are outside (y)
Tested it yesterday.. all works OK.

Just got to decide where to fit it now so only one set of screwholes.

Yes we tried a few options with that.
