Tam & Toby ~~Hunting Zorba

Ok thanks guys. Think I just needed a sounding board .. mum is understandably wary ...not helped by my sister apparently who keeps telling her things like her insurance isn't covering foreign travel etc but after explaining to her that I have checked these things with my insurance and they've said I'm covered even after the b word etc ...
I've also said to her that I personally think I'm more at risk here than there and certainly more of a risk to her if working here etc so I think she's feeling a bit better now ... hopefully.

So it's just all back to toby

And on that front there's little progress at the minute . ..the mechanic is having a job getting this broken bolt out as it's in a very tight spot that you can't get an ordinary drill in to ...so they've been trying to weld a nut to the broken bolt and do it that way ... unfortunately it's not getting a good enough hold and because the bolt is most likely in with locktight it needs a good fixing as it keeps breaking the weld

I think they are now trying to source one of those right angled drills
This part will push the price up due to time so I'm hoping they have a breakthrough soon

Had 3 different folk on phone from carhire place trying to locate the car lol...they are pretty dumb .. I've given them full address , postcode and even map coordinates and screenshot location and still having probs lol

Only you can decide Tam, I know what I would do, no one has ever stopped me from doing what I have done through life, and I have never told our daughters what to do or not to do, because everyone over the age of consent has their life to live, our youngest has mentioned living in Canada and Portugal over the years, we felt happy for them, the eldest is into old VW campers, we never say don't buy that it will be a money pit, neither of them want children, does that take away the love that grandchildren give, or just give us less to worry about. 🙂 Bob.

My fourpennerth is that you should go. Go and find that warm weather that suits you. Many people were stuck in MHs all over Europe when borders closed last time and there was still always the option of just staying put or travelling home.

When Toby does get fixed , I would go, if you what till 2021 you maybe be in position of needing blood test for the dogs and get caught in other Brexit stuff.
We returned from France Sunday and from what we saw driving back with lack of masks, I definitely felt safer in France with most people wearing masks.

I ve just read a few of the replies to the conundrum.
Some saying you might not be able to get back.
I m not wholly positive but not sure any country has stopped someone travelling home so far. So in my view that would be a red herring.
Greece to scotland 3 or 4 days in a rush.
Nothing has actually changed since last week apart from your mum being more concerned.
I believe she is independant and a phone call/3 days away.
I d be off to Greece.

Best of luck with YOUR decision

We travelled from southern Spain through France back to the UK by calais during the lockdown in March it wasn't a problem.
If we didn't have to be back in the uk for business reasons we would have travelled in Oct Nov and Dec right through to the end of march.
We know that in 2021 we are going to be restricted to 90 days on 90 days off in Europe so maybe last chance for a really great longer trip.
Get Toby fixed and start again no problem nothings really changed other than the uk is catching up with restrictions that most of europe has anyway.
Whatever you decide it should be about you as your mam has already said its not about her.

I'm having déjà vu here at the minute
Remember the problem with the broken bolt on the car?

Well the garage has removed the broken stud on the van ....it's not a bolt it's a stud with threads either side of a smooth shank

Getting one is proving difficult ....fiat would have to order from Italy
Screwed rod is no good as it needs the shank
Needs to be high tensile ...

Scrapyard is probably the best bet

The nut on the bottom is one the welded on to draw the broken bit out

Scrap yard is definitely your best option. That looks like an M10 fine pitch thread, which will be awkward to get hold of from the usual outlets. See if the garage or scrappy has a long bolt that's the correct fine pitch thread, then saw the head off it and run a standard die down it with a bog standard nut to hold the bracket in place ?
Oh, and get yourself away once Toby's sorted !

What diameter is it? We get similar bolts from GR fasteners in Aberdeen. Must be a similar outfit closer to you?

That's what garage is trying to do now ....will see how that goes ...if not I'll have to go round scrapyard s tomorrow and see if I can get one .it's a 1.25 thread I think going by their guages

They could also get a bot the right diameter & the correct length to under the bolt head then cut bolt head off & thread the top of the bolt with a 10mm x 1,25die .Jobs a good un. I suppose they have a tap & die set ?

Aye that's what jockaneezer suggested above ...they are trying to make one just now by cutting a bolt down .

Bolt problem solved thankfully.

Mechanic has taken a bolt out their tyre machine as it was same thread and high tensile with a long shank ...cut it down and rethreaded it so fingers crossed thats going to work

What3Words?
I think they are full of excuses to be honest any satnav could find this place ...I think it's just a ploy so they don't commit to a definite time. I'm not taking it to them and I'll be here till vans fixed so sod em

As soon as the vans fixed Tam, get away ASAP, It's what you've been working for, of course your mum will be worried, but as a lot of us found out earlier this year it's not that far/ long to travel home should an emergency arise

Go for it!

Let's hope you don't need a new tyre before this is all over 😀

It doesn't help either that the media and the latest statements from both bojo and sturgeon have my mum worried again and telling me I shouldn't go

She's asking this morning if anyone on this forum has advised me not to travel

And it's getting to me ....because her worrying about me is making me worry about her ....I don't know if she's just worried about me travelling or if she's worried about how she will manage etc when I'm gone if things get bad here again over winter ....problem is she would never admit to that because she would never want me not to go because of her

So here's the question and I'd like honest answers

What do people think ?
With the new advice , the rising of cases etc.
Would you press ahead and go travelling in Europe now ? Or would you stay put ?

I'd just like to know others thoughts on the matter ....because my mum always said that when things happen it's fate or that someone is trying to tell me something....and that was her first reaction when Toby broke down ....and having had that all my life it does have a habit of sticking in my mind
I can't advise in terms of looking after your mother but we are away in Spain one of the supposedly worst places and we feel so safe. We are staying in rural areas, hardly any contact with anyone, usual precautions when shopping and supermarkets are so quiet here compared with my home city, people take it seriously here. Never see anyone without a mask even on the street. We are heading to Portugal next where numbers are low and they coped well during the last wave. I follow the numbers regularly to keep an eye and Spain look at the moment to have peaked and be coming back down but who knows. What i do know is even with high numbers there just doesn't seem to be the same media/government panic here. They are just getting on with life with the current restrictions.
