Tam & Toby ~~Hunting Zorba

Your joking,,are they real,,Why ever not..Would be finding another garage Tam. Hope no damage done other than to your timetable. BUSBY.
the garage priced & done exactly what tam asked ! , not the garages fault , on hindsight tam may be thinking he should have changed them out of caution, many a time I’ve looked back and thought ( could have/ should have ) , As the old saying goes , pays your money & takes your chances
Well to be fair I asked for a timing belt kit to be fitted ...the other belts were not mentioned either by me or by the garage.
At the minute it's not known whether the belt that snapped did so due to age or if something else failed causing it to snap ..
The alternator belt looked in good enough condition when I fitted the alternator last year , probably looked ok when the garage fitted the cambelt this year ...I guess they will only do what they are asked to do.

In hindsight maybe I should have said to replace all belts but I never thought to at the time ...and to be fair who would have thought a failing alternator belt would end up going in to the cambelt

Just bad luck on that I guess

Cambelt hasn't arrived yet so waiting again

Ok so here's the latest ...not only has it damaged the cam belt ...it's sheered a bracket that holds one of the pulleys ...so there's a broken bolt needs extracting .
It's also eaten through a cam sensor ...

So the parts are on order and will be here tomorrow ...

So not a straightforward fix as hoped ...

Will be staying overnight at the garage again.

Hire company coming to collect car at some point today also

They are fitting a new cambelt on it as the belt had been damaged by the shredded drive belt ...so 3 new belts.
Other than that I don't know anything else yet ...he's not mentioned if timing out or anything so will see how it goes
Sounding good, at least looks like not too much damage. What about the water pump is it worth changing while all the belts are off I know it's not driven by the cambelt But if it were size and took the belt with it, you could get a similar problem.

Things looking somewhat better. Lenny HB put yourself on standby expect Tam by Friday/Saturday.
He will have to be quick I'm off to Germany on Sunday.

I'm sure when the cambelt was done they said it looked like it had been changed but I'll mention it to them

It's ok you are safe lol ...if all goes well and I'm off again it will be a one night stop between here and tunnel next time

Just have to see how it goes tomorrow when they put it back together

Just be grateful you weren't in Norway like us a few years ago.

An alternator and some belts or other (this technical stuff isn't my forte) and this was Martin's post ...

"Ready...... total bill which includes express carriage......£1860....
Paid without tip with Credit Card.....might need to plan ahead our next Norwegian trip...like don't go....been stung on consecutive trips....That's life..."

You'll not get a bill anything like that, Tam 👍👍

I bloody hope not ....I witnessed 2 customers in here getting bad news today

A 2011 transit with engine failure ...£2650 for replacement engine plus ancillaries and fitting

And a 2003 VW transporter , gearbox ,egr valve and a driveshaft £3175

No idea yet what mine will cost ...but parts needed so far plus labour I'm expecting £4 -500 ☹️ which is bad enough

Hopefully yours won't be to bad (y)

Mine on the other hand (2010 Boxer), turbo blew, had it replaced (plus all pipes etc and a few little jobs - £1200
Drove for 2 hours and the engine blew. Went for a proper remanufactured unit (classed as zero miles) and with a few other little bits - another £4500
Then decided to give it a refit and stopped counting

Does not sound as though it is going to be a cheap fix, but whatever it is you could do without it. Any chance you could work a few nights while your home & leave beginning of October?

lets hope they can get the broken bolt out
Should be fine
I assume the broken pulley bracket is for the auxiliary belt?
I'm not entirely sure ...I've not been under it he just showed me the bracket and sheared bolt ...but I'm guessing so as the van still ran and I don't think it would have with the cambelt flapping loose

I would change the water pump while its all apart . False economy not to (y)

Tell you what ..the car hire company enterprise are about as bad as the AA with wasting your time

Don't worry about the car hire company Tam..Wait for them to ring you.
Meet them at your convenience not theirs.BUSBY.

Here we go again, I've boiled the kettle, got the popcorn out and settled down for another nail biting day of waiting to see if Toby is good to go :giggle:
I've no nails left ...I'm up to my wrists now

Was freezing here overnight...I do hope they fix it so I can escape the weather and the further covid restrictions

So I thought I better clarify with the mechanic what that bracket was off as I was assuming it was for the drive belt.
Unfortunately it wasn't it's a bracket that holds one of the timing belt pulleys ......so given that there is still the possibly that it could have jumped teeth and therefore done internal damage

Unfortunately there's no way of knowing that other than putting it all together and trying it OR dismantling the engine and checking everything....so not a great choice as both could be expensive.

Their first choice is to assemble it and hope that it hasn't done any damage ...which I'm inclined to agree with. ....but they will make sure everything is turning freely etc before starting up .

So yeah still no guarantee everything will be fine ..

Currently at the mercy of the parts delivery ..

So very sorry to hear of your troubles, Tam. Hope it’s fixed soon and that there’s been no ancillary damage.

It doesn't help either that the media and the latest statements from both bojo and sturgeon have my mum worried again and telling me I shouldn't go

She's asking this morning if anyone on this forum has advised me not to travel

And it's getting to me ....because her worrying about me is making me worry about her ....I don't know if she's just worried about me travelling or if she's worried about how she will manage etc when I'm gone if things get bad here again over winter ....problem is she would never admit to that because she would never want me not to go because of her

So here's the question and I'd like honest answers

What do people think ?
With the new advice , the rising of cases etc.
Would you press ahead and go travelling in Europe now ? Or would you stay put ?

I'd just like to know others thoughts on the matter ....because my mum always said that when things happen it's fate or that someone is trying to tell me something....and that was her first reaction when Toby broke down ....and having had that all my life it does have a habit of sticking in my mind

I think you should postpone your travels mate Europe (I think) will end up in a full lockdown again. How are you going to go forward if every country you go into locks 🔒 you down on entry or may refuse you entry 😷. I can see Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 go into a lockdown of sorts again along with the rest of the uk.

Tam you would also have to think about what work you did if you stayed at home. The danger would be that you would probably put your mum at a greater risk by staying at home. As long as mum has means to get her shopping.
