Tam & Toby ~~Hunting Zorba

Ok well the mechanic had started rebuilding it all this morning ....I finally got the car hire company to pick up the car at 10.30 and I thought I might aswell walk down to mums with the dogs , so when I left around 11 the guy said he was just reattaching the engine mount then just the fanbelts to fit and it would be ready to start up ...he said he has turned all the engine and certainly no tight spots so hopefully no internal damage .

So I'm down at mums and they will phone me once it's started etc and will take it from there.
Everything crossed.BUSBY.

My worry would be for the sake of a few quid, if it seizes you could be back to square one, that's if it was the alternator belt that caused the problem
Aye but I'm more and more thinking the problem has been caused by something being overtightened or something .

So that's the garage just called ...all back together and it's been started up and is sat running at the minute ...all seems well so I'm going to head up there again now
Great news. Now get yourself and the dugs away to the sun. (y)

I'm with Lenny.. I think the tensioner went & took the alternator belt with it...

Was the tensioner changed with the cam belt?

Was the cam belt changed by the garage that is fixing the van is now?

And I thought Fiat Ducato water pumps were expensive but also very durable unlike some other makes where they only cost a few quid

I'm going to say it - told you so😊. Because the timing belt was intact and still on the pulleys there was close to no chance of engine damage. The valve timing has to be out by a huge margin for the pistons to hit the valves. So far out that the belt would come off or break rather than simply jumping teeth. When you started it to put it on the transporter that was confirmation enough for me.

Yeah don't start me on that because I'm starting to wonder myself
Especially as it's the cambelt tensioner bracket that's broken and I can't see a fanbelt doing that.

But I also can't see any garage admitting liability
Now Tam,
I am no way as laidback as you.
In fact a wee bit of a worrier!!
You know I am watching your thread with a great deal of interest especially when we both have similar MHs AND I had my Cambelt changed 1 week after you with the same Garage :frowny::frowny::frowny:

Should be just about to blow then!!:oops::oops:

I'm hoping for £200.00 but expecting £300.00 plus. If they are feeling a bit guilty maybe £ 100.00

Ok well here it is

Now before I tell you the bill etc

I have to say what my thoughts are when I was walking back to the garage.

When the van broke down there was no bangs , no rattles , no vibrations ,jerking , misfires etc ...just the battery warning light initially...then the engine management light and it was still running when I phoned Lenny to tell him I was breaking down ...in fact it was idling a good 10-15 minutes before there was any noise.

So

With that thinking I'm not sure the tensioner bracket could have broke first

I guess we will never know .....it's human nature to assume the garage did something wrong and caused the breakdown but there's no way of really knowing
As much as that hurts the wallet ...

So the total bill was more than i expected and more than I hoped for but it is all in parts with only 2 hours labour on it

So that's a few weeks of my travel budget gone between the repair and the extra fuel used to repeat the trip

Bummer

But as always it could have been worse ...it's just annoying when you think you've taken the precautions and done the work only for something like this to happen

Labour wise, i think that's very good. Parts wise, you just got to pay that whenever any work is done on a motorhome. I think you would have paid more if you had it done locally where you broke down. Of course Lenny will have a better idea of that. What is he driving & sounding like?

Well I was going to send you a message the other day and ask if you got the fanbelts etc changed on yours and if not it might be a good idea to do them just incase .
There's no way of knowing whether it was error on their part or not .... certainly no way of proving it

I'm generally very mistrusting of garages as I've worked in them myself so ive seen the things that go on ...and the same could be said about takeaway's lol ...
Sometimes it's best not to know.

But ...that garage gets good reviews , I know many who have and do use them and the guys do all seem ok

I'm not going to torture myself thinking the worst as it will just ruin my day

The expense does sting a bit and I've lost a bit of faith in Toby at the minute but hoping that will pass

No idea but certainly the labour would have been more as they did spend way more time than 2 hours on it ..

Just a cambelt change is 3.5 hours and they spent a long time with that sheared bolt .

It sounds and drives like it always did ..always sounded healthy

If you get a wriggle on you can catch Lenny before he gets away😀 BUSBY.

on the face of it they seem to be a fair garage only charging 2 hours lab its all in the past now go and enjoy it ...if you had got over the water that bill would have been a lot dearer and i dare say very stressful

Tam

I am glad it is done and you are mobile again.

Sorry about the bill, but as said 2 hours labour seems not bad.

Now relax for a day or two.

Geoff
No time for that I've a train to catch
