Tam &Toby do Europe ...Take two

They are pretty but there is a little bit of me that would need to work extra hard to not run over and jump feet first through it shouting 'ave it!' in a Peter Kay style.

Oh Dear, I do hope you manage to continue to suppress this urge to be an infamous British yob  otherwise they will definitely be glad to see the back of all of us come the end of March. :(

Just been for a walk on beach from here back to port saplaya I'm knackered.

You know what annoys me though us when your dog runs off to play with another dog and then when you're shouting on it the other dogs owner keeps petting it or squeeking a bloody ball ...standing there blue in the face shouting for her to come and this daft Spanish guy squeeking a ball.

Revenge was had though as I eventually had to walk over to get her

I did tell him he wasn't helping
And he proceeded to throw ball which of course jade ran off with.

So I had to go get her and put her on lead .....then his dog started following jade while he went off to retrieve the ball so I jist kept walking and his dog kept following lol

He was chasing after shouting for ages and like jade his dog just ignored him lol

That'll teach him

You'd think other dog owners would know better not to encorouge your dog when you're trying to get them to come back to you.

Waving treats makes no bloody difference lol

Wrong treats, insufficiently trained dog, (tho' I confess my younger dog would be the same ), combined with ignorant and/or thoughtless other dog owner.Seems like life can conspire against you sometimes lol. ;)

Cement with salt water?

Greek Jerry builders have tried that with disasterous results.
It works in the North Sea on oil platforms,,special cement though. Used to deliver it to Gt Yarmouth from Dartford.BUSBY.

I've tried every treat but if she's 300 yards away on a beach she doesn't even hear me or remember anything about a treat. Basically she isn't hungry enough to care about the treat more than playing or the attention others give her.

But personally if another dog comes to me and the owner is calling it I completeky ignore the dog so it goes to it's owner.

We find a dog whistle gets through when our springer has the “red mist”! Used to whistle her to her food every day!
I've tried that too :(
She's not interested in treats as she mooches food whenever we are out whether walking on lead or off it. She has food in bowl most of the time because I give her meals and she doesn't eat it but prefers to graze. Maybe because she once had to fend for herself she likes to scour for her own treats.
I've tried everything from bought treats to steak and it makes no odds if she can't see it.

When in the van etc I can get her to come and to sit etc with treats because she's right there and no distractions.
Soon as there's other dogs or people she isn't interested.

It is frustrating but I don't want her not getting excercise and socialising etc off the lead. So it's a 2 edged sword lol.

Treats don't have to be food Tam, they can be a game, a squeaky toy or all manner of things. Some dogs are more food orientated than others. Some years ago whilst attending a dog training club I found I could 'capture ' all manner of 'deaf' and absconding dogs that were ignoring their owners with the liver sausage I was using as treats for my dog. :p A treat has to be just that and of sufficiently high value that your dog wants it more than the distraction.
The real secret though is to practice and establish the correct behaviour in the absence of distracting temptations.

I do practice when we are away from distractions...I can even get her to do tricks lol. But I struggle when she's distracted.
She only ever seems interested in other dogs balls than her own etc.

She is very hyper and basically loves everyone and every dog lol

Because dogs can sometimes go genuinely deaf in old age, or sometimes can't hear you because of extraneous noise, ours are trained to a few very basic hand signals. The sign we use to "come" is both arms held out horizontally (as in crucifixion). You feel a bit of a fool but they can see that from a long way off, obviously they have to be looking in the right direction .
A dog whistle can be useful, though you're stuck if you've left it behind.

I do have the whistle with me and I Guess I can try it again.
I don't think she's deliberately being disobedient most of the time I think she just gets excited and doesn't listen.

But I think once I collect milo I'm gonna visit aunty @Val 2 dogs And she can work her magic lol

I hear and understand what you are saying Tam,but you've only been a dog owner for a few months and you and Jade have largely been working on your own.You are both doing really well but occasionally you will run into brick walls.
@really retired is right about hand signals and feeling a fool.
Some times you have to be really OTT in both your signals and your praise, leaping up and down, waving your arms like a banshee, telling the dog how clever and wonderful it is, scooping it up, having a game of tug when it has just done the most mundane of things.
You need to make being with you the most fun and exciting thing in Jade's life- it ain't easy. But you can do it!

Well I do try to do that lol....she's bloody spoilt rotten but it often feels like she woukd go home with anyone

Despite the fact she's currently worshipping my feet licking between my toes lol

Maybe not. I think jade loves a playmate which is why she runs off to see every other dog. Hopefully if she has one all the time then she will play with him.

I thought maybe because she was in the shelter and learned to fight for attention to every visitor there etc that maybe that's why she loves everyone. She's a very happy excitable dog and I don't want to quash that personality .....Just want her to come back when I call her.

Mostly for the safety aspect of cars etc.

This is my first dog and I'm trying lol ...But ultimately I want her and milo to have a good life

Thanks for the vote of confidence Tam but as I was saying to a friend yesterday, I have never had such I'll trained dogs.
One is old, deaf has doggy dementia and is losing her sight but is still very active, the other is young, boisterous and fun loving and like Jade can switch on her deaf ears when she choses.
Their main problem is their aged and infirm owner! !
You don't have that excuse Tam.:D

Licking between your toes Tam, yuck TMI!!!
You and the dogs are welcome here to attend boot camp and get some hints but you can also learn a lot from watching a lot of the stuff on YouTube.

She loves licking my feet lol ...She also insists on licking my hands after I've eaten even if I was using cutlery she seems to think she can taste the food lol..

She will usually sleep down at my feet to and wake me in morning licking my toes ha ha

If I should ever have a partner again they are not going to know what's going on lol
Jade will claim the space

My JRT is not driven by food and you can scream & shout as much as you like, she will listen to a whistle, but, you have to wait for her to decide when to come and at what speed.
On the beach she’s off the lead and free to do whatever she wants, we very seldom call her, unless there’s a reason, she comes & go’s as she pleases.
On a walk if she’s on the lead no problems, if she’s off lead we make sure she stays within a certain distance, even if we have to wait for her to catch up.
I think we are lucky as she is a bit wary of other dogs, having been rolled by several in the past and will catch up to us and walk between us or just ignore them!
I feel for you Tam but you have a dog that has her own mind, you’re not sure what happened to her in her previous life and she is still a baby! Persevere it will happen one day.
If you’re on the beach and it’s safe when she runs off leave her alone, if she looks in your direction make a show of running away from her, let her think you’re not bothered, but keep an eye on her.
The other way is to use a training leash-very long, and you can check her if she ignores you.

Tam,sometimes too much calling can have an adverse effect. Our sons dog responds better if called/whistled a couple of times, then we go quiet, and wait. It comes back to find out where we’ve gone. This is in woodland we’re she goes of to chase deer and other beasties. As long as they can hear you calling, they know you’re not too far away and so feel safe. Of course,if you are on a beach she can still see you,but you might be able to hide behind a rock or lie down to look different from what she normally expects.
Try it.

@Podney certainly repeated calling is really only teaching the animal that it can ignore you /the command. It's a bit like giving the command sit and following up with stay - if it is sitting, then it is going to "stay", it cannot do anything else and should remain in sit until it is either "released" or is given a different command.
As you say, repeatedly hearing it's name or the sound "come " just means you are still around making a meaningless noise.

Absolutely agree, commands should only be given once.

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once.
