Tam n pups winter trip 2022

Properly telling you to suck egg's tam but have you a long handle screw driver to help pinpoint where it's coming from but I realize it'll be challenging through the letter box bonnet.

Have you got a long rod to put to your ear on certain parts of the engine to find the noise, I’m sure you know what I mean about the long rod….
He is a big lad but I'm not sure it will be long enough.

So much for low mileage engines eh , the hymer had 118000 on it , this has 30000 . Hymer had no rattles etc.
30k it's been sitting around most of it's life. As you well know a prime candidate for alternator & water pump bearing failure. If you need to get someone to do it get it done in NI the Southern bit is very expensive.

Can't get anywhere near that side of the engine from above. You really need to jack it up take wheel off and the plastic pulley covers etc.

Well I've no idea what's wrong with the van but Something is definitely not right. I can't tell if the noise is coming from the pulley side or in the gearbox but it's got worse that's for sure. I'm just feeling sick to my stomach truth be told . I'm fed up with this . Every time and every bloody van I get issues and I'm now worried its going to break down.

Not by any chance the infamous 5th gear problem. If it is a fairly easy fix if you can get the bits.

I can't tell lenny . I've taken a short video I'm just waiting on it uploading to YouTube. As I said it's still driving OK at the minute it's just noisy ...and definitely not right . Still getting this eml light coming on occasionally too if you try to push it in any gear .

Tam, is it rattly noisy when idling or when moving.
If when idle can you video a short clip then maybe someone could identify the noise if they have had similar. I know not easy but worth a punt.

Bugger you beat me too it lol

Don’t make it worse Tam, seek out a decent garage before it goes pop🥲

My twopenny's worth for what its worth. We had a vauxhall with an Izuz engine and the eml light flicked on and off under load, turned out to be the alternator. Hope someone has more of an idea for you. Fingers crossed not too serious 🤞

It's Saturday and because of the Queen stuff I'd be lucky to get it checked anywhere before Tuesday. And I don't know where to start looking for a garage. I'm peed off at the bloody thing . I'm going to head out of Belfast for now towards Carrick Fergus as there's a dump and fill point there at least . But will likely continue to whitehead as there's better options. If the weather is fine the next day or 2 I'll take the cover off to access the belts and pulleys and see if I can get a better look. Obviously it makes more noise when being revved but I can't rev and look at the same bloody time.

Get a length of tube and use that like a stethoscope to isolate the area of noise ,from what I can hear on the clip sounds dry bearing at front end of engine HTSH

Yes it does seem to come from the pulley end but for some reason the noise changes when the clutch is pressed and released which causes the confusion. I'll need to take that plastic cover off to get a good idea so I'll need to move to where I can park up for a couple of days .

That could just be that the clutch release bearing is slightly noisy as well and so the two together changes the sound . Didnt you have a bit of drama with the clutch a little while back ?

Tam keep the following in mind. Carrickfergus Castle. Large car park beside it. Many vans spend the night there. Whitehead seafront/harbour. Good park for the night, good walk along and up around the lighthouse. Carnlough Marina, good park for the night.

If you can locate where the noise comes from you still need the parts and by lack of tools and safe access methods maybe the labour too, do we have any members in the area you are in who could recommend their local garage and have a chat with their favourite mechanic?
It’s a bummer, but that’s how it goes, by the time you have the van sorted it will be good for someone else as you sell it on again lol, no piece of kit is ever problem free Tam🤷🏻‍♂️

Aye there's been a rattle from the gearbox area since I got it..

The current noise does sound like something is spinning that shouldn't or its lacking lubrication. On the drive up here to Carrick Fergus it was mostly OK then sometimes you just get this almighty loud noise like a well worn brake pad on a disc ... it does it for a bit then easies off again . Something is well knackered I just don't know what yet. This aire at Carrick Fergus is no good either. Fine for emptying cassette which I've done but for parking it's no good , right on the main road and there's no larger bays

It’s hard from the video to pin point the noise it’s certainly sounds front end pulley but to confirm tape up the flywheel hole and see if the noise changes.

I'm pretty sure now it's the pulley end

It is hard to tell, but from your video I think I'd start with alternator and water pump bearings.
Aye those are my suspicions too .. it doesn't seem as bad when the b2b is off too . Which may point to alternator.

I've just moved on to whitehead as a big parking spot here.

There's 5 other motorhomes too which are the first other vans I've seen since arriving in norn irn

I'll get a look at the van tomorrow

Could it be a bearing in the alternator, I’d be tempted to take that belt of and run engine to check.

Sounds logical, especially if the sound changes when load on the alternator changes.

Look on the bright side Tam, yes it's a pain in the arse, BUT if it is the alternator it's not usually too bad to change them. From *memory* on the X244 2.8 you can get alternator access by crawling underneath to the back of the engine, behind the sump, so if you've got some ramps or can scrounge some from another MH you can get to it and it doesn't make any odds that it is an A class with a letter box bonnet..

Hope it's an easy fix Tam. My brother in law lives in Carrickfergus but he's away at the moment and isn't mechanically minded so I suspect wouldn't have been much help.
