Tam n pups winter trip 2022

Our little ones love bugs .. flies, ants, beetles, wasps, bees ... you name it ... they were trying to eat a ladybird the other day until I rescued it!
Ah see mine are all scared of insects. Fly comes in the van they all hide under the table or in the cab etc

Found a big fat juicy tick on ela this morning ....that girl needs to keep oot that long grass. Made swift work of it with tweezers little bugger was still waving its pincers about when I bashed it with a big spoon . Haven't found any more yet thankfully

I've just taken off the bottom engine cover to check out the pulleys and the weird noise and typically it isn't doing it this morning. Or at least it isn't as loud ...there is a bit of noise coming from the power steering pulley but nowhere near what I could hear the other day. I had it running a good 10 /15 minutes but I'm aware of disturbing the other folk in vans parked right next to me who appear to be watching the queen's funeral very loudly .

I've taken a small video again and it definitely seems louder near the steering pump than anywhere else.

I might have to take it out a run and see if I can get it to do it again which is a pain as I have the scooter off the van and I will likely lose this space if I go out.

I've left the cover off just now anyway till I check it again . I sprayed a little wd40 around the pulley which did seem to quieten it down a little. I've also taken the opportunity to clean all the old oily mess out the bottom of the plastic under tray .

I'll put the wee video up once it's uploaded

It does sound a bit tinnier around the AC electric clutch. Can you not remove the AC belt and run without it as it doesn’t seem to drive anything else to confirm it is that?
When I changed my drive belts the AC made a terrible metallic noise, switched it on and off and has been fine since. Mine is a 2013 Ducato.

Use the scooter to reserve your space if its already off the van
Ha ha I moan about other FLT folk doing that . I've just parked the scooter away from the van and if someone pinches the spot I'll just park on another bit. I'm going to take it a wee drive after lunch and I'll try putting the ac and the b2b etc on and off and see if anything makes a difference. It was making a terrible noise yesterday so it might need to get warmed up properly first

My aircon isn't working ...its needing regassed I think but its something I tend not to use so I wasn't much bothered about it . But I will try switching it on and off when I take the van a run to see if it causes the noise to come back.

Definitely coming from that area this morning alternator and water pump etc seem normal

Could be the wd40 you sprayed yesterday has finally got to the offending bit..😎
Possibly but I couldn't get very far down yesterday. It usually evaporates once the engine has warmed up so will find out on a run . I do have some spray grease I can try later if I identify the source of the noise. There didn't seem to be any play in any of the pulleys so it could just be as simple as a dry bearing. That bottom front pulley is fairly exposed to bad weather.

Here's hoping

Not using is what buggers it, no sythpathy there you have been told enough times.
It's not worked since I bought this van I tried it when driving back from Wissel Place and it wasn't cold. I did think about getting it regassed but hadn't got round to it . I've nearly always got my drivers window open unless it is raining

But that wouldn't cause a noisy bearing as the pulley is driven constantly anyway

If there is no gas in the AC system the pump won't run.
The pulley runs all time engine runs but the electro clutch (within the pulley) will not engage and drive the actual pump

My air con is knackered so when I had the cam belt done I told garage to leave belt of. Why don’t you take the belt off and try it.

Try the bit of hose stethoscope trick ,its pretty accurate, also locking the ac clutch should eliminate the idle bearing as it doesn't rotate when locked . Just run a wire temp from 12v live to clutch feed wire (when its unplugged) don't do for long as not good for ac pump internals but wont hurt for a few seconds . If a/c pump idle bearing then you have two options , fit a non a/c option belt or get the a/c front clutch repaired/replaced . Not a good idea to ignore as they can seize up .

Right so I've just taken it a good drive up and around islandmagee and I'm pleased to say there has been no noise other than what you can hear on that video , I've run it with the aircon on and off and the b2b on and off and there's no difference. I'm going to spray some spray grease around the rear of the ac pulley and through the vents on the front of it see if that stops the noise for now. And I will leave the cover off for a few days too till I see if it gets any worse.

I didn't do the hose trick but I did hold a 12 inch extension bar to the centre pulley bolt and to my ear and there is a definite slight rumble coming from in there so I'm almost convinced that's where its coming from . The rattle I've had all the time from the clutch/gearbox is still there but as always if I press the clutch it goes away and even at 4000rpm the engine itself sounds healthy with no rattle so I think that bit is just a release bearing issue I have to live with.

If the noise returns from this ac unit then I'll do what you suggest and fit a non ac belt for now till I can pick up a new ac unit .

I'm just kind of relieved it isn't anything serious. .

Isn’t that belt only doing the a/c

This is one busy wee place , we've just been for our afternoon walk to the lighthouse and back and no joke there must be 200 people walking back and forth along there right now ....and everyone says hello or good afternoon...its getting like the motorhome wave lol , after 10 minutes yer sick of it ... anyway I'm having a treat night tonight as there's a Chinese takeaway close by and I deserve one lol.

I was sitting outside earlier and there were 3 motorhome couples all norn Irish having a blether about motorhoming , it was much the same discussion as on here , height barriers, folk complaining about motorhomes in carparks , service areas or lack of them , folk emptying toilets in hedges , so it seems its all the same issues here as elsewhere in the UK.

They all knew each other but weren't travelling together. All 3 of those vans have now left so must have just been out for the night

There are 2 French vans here now and 2 UK registered and myself .

I'm going to move on tomorrow now I think . I'll have to phone the mechanic that Winger put me in touch with and just let him know that at the minute it seems to be fine and I think I've pinpointed the problem part. I've given the pulley a good spray with spray grease and I'll let that soak in overnight and see how it is tomorrow. I've left the cover off for now for easy access .

Is that 'cause you're running around inside screaming as you're scared of them  or you're lumbering around trying to splat them! :giggle:

The swatting them doesn't help but the reason I'm swatting them is because the dogs run away from them.

Perhaps it was the cover making the noise if you have left it off and noise has gone. (y)

No the cover couldn't make this noise . The noise is there it's just very light compared to the grinding noise it was making yesterday. I'll no In the next day or two if it has gone or just temporary

Not sure whits going on but now apart from the one French camper I'm the only one here now .

Not for her which is the point of today ...
Well I think 96 is a pretty good innings eh .

In the last 2 years we've lost a lot of folk thar didn't make thar age . And with the cost of living crisis I imagine we will lose a whole load more this winter.

But the world won't stop.
