Tam n pups winter trip 2022

Just gotta take this foam off , can't save it as I can't get in to the wood without removing the foam . No rigidity in this panel at all now though and the aluminium is falling away from that seam join . The screws from the join don't even go into the aluminium or the wood that was there , it's screwed through the fibreglass cab section

And typically its absolutely pissin it down and the forecast looks the same for days.

It's like the old saying "How do you eat an elephant...?"
Do you think an oscillating multi-tool might shift that foam easier Tam ?

I can't really tell from the photos on my phone.
But would a rough and ready fix work by putting a sheet of plywood inside and then fill it with expanding foam behind?

I've now removed all the foam I'm planning to take off. I should be able to put new framing in at that and then use 25mm cellotex to replace the foam.

My biggest concern is how I get new wood fitted in here as its quite far in

Could you bond celotex/kingspan to the outer aluminium, then bond ply to that, then use the ply to fix the sandwich in place to something sturdy?

Yeah thats sort of what I'm planning to do . But still need to put some wood batons back in too for some rigidity

That sounds about what I would do. Make sure the wood is well seasoned u don't want it warping. Be careful if you are going to use expanding foam or you may have very wavy external panel.

Just another thought. Can you get the wood into that recess and then screw it to the internal metalwork if it's solid no movement. Suitable glue between wood and skin.
Once you have a solid fix then another batten screwed to the first but a bit narrower to slot the wall board against.

There's no metalwork . Just fibreglass . It gets glued in place but then there is holes through the fibreglass to screw it through. But have to wait till the plywood is in there first

Hi Tam, this may help taking up irregularities in the construction, if you can get to a builders merchant and get some of this below or similar, it is a foaming adhesive like gorilla glue but it expands a bit more and doesn’t go quite as hard, if you cut some rips of ply to go behind that door frame so that it nearly fills the gap then put this on the side that is against the wall panel and some on the edge and on the face that is going to be against the door jamb, when it goes off you will be able to screw through it into the ply but the foam glue won’t crush so there shouldn’t be any deformation, any queries if I haven’t explained it clearly just let me know.

Make up a baton frame, a bit like a chess board and fix it in with sika like mastic mastic and get it in that recess as far as you can and as tight as you can and use plenty of sika adhesive, also use the sika to adhere to the outer panel to give it structure and strength brace the outside and inside if you can while it dries.

once dry cut insulation to infill the squares and stick them in too, then you can finish off with a ply skin…😎

Not got a drawing app on tablet but a rough sketch.
Outer skin - glue - wood - fiberglass.
Outer skin - glue - wood - plywood/wallboard tucked in behind fiberglass.

One step at a time Tam, don’t rush, don’t skimp on materials and don’t cut corners. Do the job right and you will have a great motorhome at the end that you will be proud of. 👍
If you ignore all the above you will end up with something like this.😂

That's looking like an option. I've just been reading the terms of cover for breakdown insurance etc. Seems its up to 7.5t on motorhomes. Can't see any age limits mentioned. Says it covers any vehicle I am in so would cover my car too and I'd get mobile phone and travel insurance too.

Haven't looked to see how much I'd have to pay in to the account monthly though
I've used the mobile phone insurance twice - my wife dropped her phone, & my daughter lost hers - very efficient indeed, phone that looked brand new was with us in 2 days both times.

I've also used the breakdown in Europe - so much depends on what local contractor you get, but they did get me to a good garage eventually. You have to insist that over 3.5t is covered, at first they tried telling me it wasn't.

I'm happy with it, for me especially with family it's a very good deal.

Should have said - all you need to claim on the phone insurance is the IMEI number of the phone, so worth recording that. Excess was £100 both times, a lot less than the phones cost.

Hi Tam, I am a retired joiner, had a workshop for 15 years and spent last working years on quality site carpentry. I can't totally understand your problem without seeing it.
Some thoughts:
The new timbers don't necessarily need to be in one length, they can be full length but in sections. You could insert a section and push from an outside prop until the glue sets, therefore sealing the outer joint.
Pu glue is the one to use and sikaflex too.
If you need to insert plywood temporarily to fill up the gap, cover small pieces with clingfilm so no glue can stick to it and remove ready for the real thing.
Cellotex 25 mm foam will not hold water and glued to the wall will improve stiffness.
Use expanding foam sparingly and let it set, don't lock it in as it won't cure (like it's still in the can) or slowly expand for months. I have foam on my shed roof where it shouldn't be and no rainwater ever gets past it.
Park the van near a wall, as Lenny has said to prop from.

Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs. I know you will sort it once you forget your doubts....like you have done before. Good luck.

Yes now I have it all stripped out i can see clearer what I need to do with it .

Think my biggest problem is lack of tools for this type of job ...and having only 2 hands. All looks good in theory but getting it to turn out right is another matter 🤣.

Having a day away from it today and out with dogs and a friend. Can't get materials till Monday now anyway.

I've just recieved a letter in Portuguese for a fine that I was specifically told was not a fine back In August 2018 lol

I admire their perseverance but really? Do they expect me to even attempt to translate this nonsense?

Put it in the walls of Moby when you do them. 👍
It's the fact it's 8 pages long and in Portuguese the only bit I can understand is my name address and the date.

I remember the incident well as it was nearly 10pm and some daft officer told me it was illegal to stay overnight , so I said no problem I will move. He moved 4 vans in total but had me fill out a form he insisted was not a fine it was a warning and that it would only be a fine if I was told off again by another officer.

So basically they lied.

I got a letter about it back in 2021 3 years after the incident and I binned it . But here it is again now 5 years after lol. I've not been in Portugal since 2019 but I was in a different van.

I sold the frankia in 2018 anyway lol
