Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

You're about a month behind us in puppy age so its interesting to compare. Every day Roly reaches new heights. She's desperate to get on the bed. She's not allowed in the bedroom but when she does slip in there its 'wayhey game on'.

We don't know yet what personality Jade will eventually have. She may calm down very quickly. But I've been tipped onto my backside by Roly's over excited play with another dog when she ran through my legs. I went down like a sack of spuds and felt a right lemon. Then both dogs piled on for playtime. She's a spaniel and I think calm is a long way off.

I'm sure you don't regret your decision one bit.

I love spaniels they are nuts. I met a lovely one a few weeks back with just the right mix of personality ...bouncy and full of energy at playtime but then settled down and just wanted to cuddle in after.

Its sunny here too but really cold. Your lovely photos will have to do until we can get off for some spanish sunshine.
It's still a little chilly here early morning and once the sun goes down but nice temperature through the day now thankfully

We are going to move today not sure where to yet ...going to go to visit the "estrecho de la arboleja" today as that looks interesting but not decided if I'll stay there or not ...be interesting to see how jade copes with the drive but she has to get used to that.
I'm going to try her on the front seat in her harness this time I think and see how that goes.

I gave in and just got up so she can have a cuddle....as she's been such a good girl with the toilet and I don't want her picking up wrong signal.....might need a siesta later

Oh by the way thanks for all the goods and bads regarding food .
Good idea on the carrots too ...might help her teeth

A friend had sent me this the other day too which helps.View attachment 223150
dont want to get in this dog thing, but dogs cant have milk, who the hell is writing that.
makes you wonder what else is right on that list.

She's very good to sleep through Tam. For what it's worth, when I needed to put Roly back in her crate in the night and she'd whine, I sat beside it saying very quietly ''shush, good girl" (she couldn't see me). It only took a few minutes and 2 nights for her to learn.

I'm afraid we have a 6.30 habit where I lie on the settee and she snuggles down under the blanket as I'm not quite ready to get up. She goes back to sleep. Problem is when I started it she was a tiny ball of fur, now she's a big sprawly thing. It will come to an end soon.

Jade is probably used to snuggling with her litter mates or other dogs and she's seeking that comfort from you. She's only young after all. It sounds to me like you've got off to a great start.

I took her out for a wee then brought her back in and put her back in her crate . That's when she started whining so then I'm thinking is this creating a negative experience for her while I should be rewarding her for no accidents.

I think that's a really valid point.

Personally I don't like to use a cage - I like my dog to free-range. We bought one when we got him as it seemed the fashionable thing to do but our dog hated it no matter what we did in terms of comfy bedding/blanket over the top, etc. My guess is that some dogs adjust to one but others don't - if they fall into the latter camp it could cause more problems than it solves.

thats what i meant , had farm dogs for years , they drank gallons of the stuff
It may be down to what milk they were drinking . If it was "raw" milk (unprocessed) then pretty much any animal can drink , modern processed milk is a different matter . We buy and drink raw jersey milk (local farm) and have found our cats (and a baby hedgehog) have no problem with it . A lactose intolerant friend even buys it and its solved her problem with milk.

I think for now we will use the crate in part , as she's so young and I don't trust her enough yet to be left unattended out of the crate I will use it when she goes to bed and if I need to leave her to go to the shops which never takes me more than 30 to 45 mins.
When we moved today I let her lie up on the front seat on a blanket harnesses to the seatbelt and I think she preferred that.....but unfortunately she was still sick. ..twice
And I don't know where she got so much as hadn't fed her that much this morning.

We visited the "Estrecho de la arboleja" had a walk round ( mostly carried her ) and then we decided to move a little further down as we don't have to be back in murcia till July I thought it was next month but I've to leave her till she's 6 months to have steralised.
So we are down on the coast just south of aguilas.

Jade is lying out under an umbrella recovering from her travel sickness and I'm catching some sun before lunch :)

Can't upload pics just now internet signals a bit naff will try later

Tam, have a look at Adaptil, they do a spray to help dogs with travel sickness. My friend’s going to use it with her pup who is about Jade’s age and is dreadfully sick even on short runs.

As with people they are less likely to be travel sick if they can see out. Perhaps get her to sit up on the front seat rather than lie down. Meg used to get travel sick but grew out of it. Spice has never been bothered by it.

Still got a rubbish internet signal so can't upload any pics just now , in a nice little cove beautiful beach on either side of the van, wee bar restaurant here absolutely lovely spot. Gonna climb up the cliff later so might be able to post photos from up there.

Jade slept through from midnight till 6.50 this morning and woke me with a little whine.

No accidents again .....shes such a good girl.

Fairly livening up now when out and about she wants to run everywhere loads of energy.
She gave her first bark yesterday and I don't know who got the biggest fright ...i expected to have a wee happy type bark but it's a deep booming bark like you'd get from a Labrador or a Rottweiler or something lol.

Anyway she's not getting to be a barky dog so she was promptly told off for barking at other dogs and to say hello nicely .........even if they are German:p

I've an old rucksack I've tried putting her in that I can clip her harness too and she didn't seem to mind so I'm gonna try her in that today when out for a while ....get her used to these things early and see how we get on.

And I also have to try leaving in the van alone for a wee while either today or tommorow..im nervous about that but she hasnt been chewing anything so far so I think if I leave the blinds closed so passing dogs dont set her off and perhaps leave some music on and see how that goes.
She seems to like Julio Iglesias lol :p

Anyway ....ill post up some pics later if I get a better internet connection

Morning Tam, Sounds like she's doing great and doing you the world of good too. Haha with the bark fright.

Morning glad you had a good night again.
Don’t dogs chew when left alone perhaps the crate and blanket over may help when you leave her .?
Morning anthea yes I was more thinking of her chewing if left alone out of the crate

At the minute we are only using it for nightime sleeping and to be honest if I can get to a point where she's happy just sleeping in a bed instead of the crate I think that would suit us best in the long run as during the day she just sleeps anywhere.
But will see how things progress

You and puppy are still learning about each other and she will miss you when you leave her so may play up!
It’s natural but as she gets confident you will be back better I sure!

Good news about the deep bark, much more effective to keep unwanted visitors at bay.
Tam may want orange selling ladies knocking!!

Lovely photos what an amazing country and love that you put a mat for her under the brolly and she slept on the mud!( that’s fickle ladies for you!!) and luving your purple T shirt!!

Daddy daddy I want to go play in the water, take me daddy....PLEASE

See I know doggy language :D2

Like all the latest photos . One slight reservation , you said above Jade likes Inglesias, I'm hoping that's a wee joke and you don't have a cd in the van . Might have to retract my previous statement about meeting you and shaking your hand when you get home:D:D. Too be fair , not a bad crooner , but hope he was a better goalkeeper while at Real Madrid.
I also said I would bring a biscuit for Jade , so hopefully you were joking:D
