Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

So do I or you will know all about it come bonfire night. Jade will have enough to contend with when she gets to Scotland and has a culture shock. Wonder what she will do when she sees snow lol.
Probably jump on the first boat back to Spain lol

Bonfire night is a terrible time for our dog. If only it was confined to one night but it seems to go on forever.

It's apparently a stage they all go through so hopefully she will be back to the no fear ballsy wee bugger she was before

We've always had one dog who loves fireworks and one who quivers and shakes - Conker (Welsh Terrier) loved sitting in the garden and watching fireworks, not a sound from him, while Molly (Std Schnauzer) quivered in a small dark place; these days Poppy wants to be outside barking at the skies while poor Harry squashes himself as close to me as he can get (he doesn't like any barking either - hell on wheels for him!)

Meg had a phase of being upset by certain things such as small wheels on scooters and two headed creatures (anyone on horseback or carrying a child). Luckily grew out of it. Spice has no bad habits as Meg doesn't allow him any.

Your spot on. I wish they would ban the things or make it illegal to sell them way before the time and fine folk who let them off willy nilly. Sorry I can’t give your post a like. I know what your dog goes through.

Think jade is going through this at the minute
https://www.rover.com/blog/dog-suddenly-afraid-everything-hats-street-signs/#

Last week or so she's been scared of the daftest of things ....barking and hiding from every noise and this morning she was terrified by a couple of surfers.
Whenever the wind blows she's hiding behind the cab seats.

Hope it's short lived

Hi Tam,

Strange our dog is like that now with cattle grids, wind noise and rain on the roof if in the car with the cattle grids she will try and get under the dash or front seat, with wind and rain either under the bed of spend time in the bathroom she was never like this until we got her spayed don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Enjoying your post by the way.

Yes she was jist spayed about a month back ...im hoping it's jist a phase as nothing scared her before and now she's very nervous

I doubt the paying has anything to do with it, but I am concerned about you "throwing her in the sea" - I'm not sure if you were serious about that or not.
If you were, imo that could very easily have some bearing on her new nervous behaviour. She places all her trust in you Tam,you are her pack leader and protectoready, if you really do throw her in the water she could be very frightened and anxious. You would have broken her trust in you. On the other hand if it did not frighten her she might have thought it was a fun game - just depends how she felt about it.

Ha ha she likes being thrown in she's learning to swim pretty good.

She's not nervous or frightened of me it's just silly things like the wind noise or the other day we passed a few surfers who had their wetsuits down to the waist and the arms were flapping. .she was barking and wouldn't walk past them.

Last night she was barking at shadows

Just daft things

Glad she enjoys it. Does she go in and swim of her own accord?
You have to see things from her point of view ie humans with extra arms coming out of their waists- pretty scary! like @Reallyretired two headed creatures.

No can't get her to go in herself yet I have to carry her in and she swims back to the shore
But she'll get there it's the best way to cool her off

If a dog is happy and confident in it's swimming it will swim with it's lower jaw submerged in the water, if it is not confident it will have it's head raised out of the water and it's front feet will often splash above the surface.

No! You are frightening her!Dogs cool down through their pads and theIruna tongues, let her paddle beside you, that will cool her down, if she will play with a ball or a stick (or another dog that might intice her into deeper water, let her make the choice.

I bet this nervousness "coincides " with the enforced swimming lessons.

On a dog cooling note, saw something yesterday that was quite alarming.

A 7 year old dog died after its owner gave it ice cubes in the hot weather. Apparently their bodies try and compensate for the cold stomach by heating up, it killed this poor dog. I must admit I have given my dogs ice cubes to play with, but not to cool them down. Article was from a vet.

Hmmm scary, I have a friend who fills her dog's kongs with frozen peanut butter or frozen cream cheese when she goes out and leaves them, but I suppose they are only licking them not swallowing it in a oner.
Worth keeping in mind though.

The nervousness has nothing to do with the swimming Val she's been scared of stuff before going anywhere near the water.

She may still be a little unsure of the water but she certainly isn't scared of it she walks accross shallow stuff with me all the time and will run through shallow bits to go get the birds etc.
Anytime I've thrown her in she will swim to the shore have a shake and come bounding back to me jumping and playing. She's never ran away from me at the water.

She's a little unsure of it but getting better with it and she can swim no problem ....i always have a long lead on her when I take her in the water and she's no more than up to my waist in it.

I may not have had other dogs and only had her 3 or 4 months but I do know when she's scared of something and just unsure of it

When she's scared she takes off and won't come back for ages. ..has never done that when we're at the water.

Weird eh ....the guys I was hanging out with a few days back at ferragona fed his big ridgeback frozen meat ....took it longer to eat it.

I've stuck an ice cube in jades water before but she just licks it now and then and doesn't show much interest.

I did make the mistake of giving her a little bit of icecream cone the other week and now I can't have one in peace as she's trying to pinch it off me lol
Same with Apple's everytime I eat one she's in my face I've to feed her half of it to get peace

OK Tam, you know your own dog, I didn't mean to cause offence or criticize, I know you would never intentionally do anything to frighten or harm her.

It's rubbish, a typical Facebook scare round robin...
Notice the "source" is an unnamed 'vet'.
No links pointing to the scientific evidence.
Just Google ice cubes & dogs, plenty of contrary opinion from professionals.

I had a ferret that used to go mad for 99 cornetto !! including the bits of chocolate , had no effect on him at all ?

Ha ha yes that's what jade keeps trying to steal off me , I've gave her little bits here and there about the size of my thumb

I know technically they aren't meant to have ice cream or chocolate but it's hard not to give her a wee taste

It's ok ...if I thought she was terrified of the water I wouldn't take her in....but I've seen a steady improvement with her regarding water. Even there just now she's happy to paddle in a bit with me then she will run back to shore ...but she will come back out again no probs...so she's just unsure of it but the more I encorouge her hopefully that will pass.

I'd like to make sure she's a good swimmer ....you hear so many stories of dogs drowning so I'd like her to be able to swim

I'm not a great swimmer myself so never out very far

All dogs can swim, obviously some better than others. When I was a kid we had a bull terrier, you couldn't keep him out of the water - my father used to throw him in from all manner of places and heights, it used to terrify me but never the dog lol.
I still think tho that you would be better letting Jade paddle in the shallows and try and entice her to go a little deeper of her own volition.
But that's just me, maybe I worry too much.

You more often read of owners jumping into flooded rivers etc to recue their dogs. The dog gets washed up safely down stream but the owner drowns.

@Northernraider i think you'll find jades feelings/instincts about water are driven by her inbred traits. E.g.Labradors adore water and it's hard to keep them out of it. Other breeds not so.

Ours is a mongrel we got in Portugal in Feb 2017, like Jade she will happily walk along in shallow water but backs away from anything like waves. Whereas our previous Lab, couldn't get enough of it, the sea, rivers, streams anything.

However as said above all dogs can swim if they have to. Drowning probably happens in rough seas, like people drown even if they can swim.

I do that too she does paddle but when I carry her in she isn't panicking or struggling etc she's very calm then I place her in and let her swim back to shore on her lead and I follow her in :)

She's fine honest :)

OK, I'll stop nagging! - for now ;)
