Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

The main thing to avoid with dmf vehicles is low rpm driving in higher gears , as this is where they are working the hardest , ironically this is one of the reasons they were introduced to aid
fuel economy at low rpm usage .

I think that's where I've been going wrong as I tend to have it in as high a gear as possible so I think I'll start leaving it in lower gears till I'm on dual carriageway and motorways.

This is where old diesel driving techniques , where you change up and let them pull rather than rev like a petrol doesn't suit modern drivetrains in lighter vehicles. In the heavy end they have gone back to the slow revving idea.

So anyway that's me not long away from the garage ....the guys did a sterling job and the van was good to go by 5.45.

Flywheel was okay so just the clutch and bearing changed and worked out total cost with new gearbox oil £750.

An expense I could have done without but it could have been worse and franky is now driving lovely.

So thanks due to @BreweryDave for keeping me company for the day .....think I wore him out on our his estimate 27 km walk ..which was only really 5.5km :p but he did well we only had one drink and it was a little one :p
But his company certainly made a long day go quicker and jade loved meeting and playing with ozzy.

So I'm now parked up on a wild spot down amongst the pine trees at the beach that I posted in yesterday's photos

Internet signal not great so I'll try and post pics but they might not work

Glad to hear Franky is sorted-and at the lower cost-good news.
So what was all that unnecessary worrying about and talk ofor being ripped off?
Always look on the bright side and trust that life will be good for you.

Bad experience with previous garages unfortunately makes you wary of these things. So I have trust issues ha ha

Let's hope camperserve can sort the alde problem next Friday and all will be good

What's an "alde"?
As a totally non-mechanical single female I bet I've had more bad experiences with garages than you, but what good does worrying do -it just adds stress to a situation.

It's my boiler for heating and hot water ...keeps tripping

Hopefully just a sensor

The pressure plate, driven plate and release bearing aren't any different in design whichever type of flywheel is used.

Thanks for that Tony - so here is what surprises me about the cost (not particularly referring to MoHos) - do they automatically renew the whole clutch assembly nowadays (pressure plate, driven plate & release bearing)?

"Back in the day" we normally only changed the driven plate & the release bearing (about £15 in those days now probably closer to £50) unless the pressure plate assy was knackered

OK, thanks for the explanation, but though inconvenient not life threatening so no stressing please!
When I drove to Spain in December 2016 in my "new to me" rip-off,straight from the dealer Moho apart from the flashing yellow engine warning lights on the dashboard. (Dealer quote "don't worry about them,it's probably just a bit of water got into the sensor when we did the pre-sale valeting")
I discovered a large wet area under the carpet and dog beds exploration subsequently showed the freshwater tank was spewing water whenever a tap
was used!
Some very kind fellow travellers on my first Aire at Nonancourt spent the best part of a day trying to remedy the problem with no luck.
I'm pig-headed,we drained the tank and I bought a couple of bottles of water and a very large can of deodorant!
Believe me you don't actually sweat much in an unheated van,the only hot water was what I could boil in the kettle.
I did a lot of worrying and fretting on that trip but I survived, the worrying just made me feel worse.
So I don't do it now, live in the moment, "feel the fear and do it anyway".

What's changed is the cost of labour. And possibly diaphragm covers being built with a 'life'. Most clutch kits now are 3-piece with only the dual-mass flywheel to buy separately (if needed). I think separate clutch cover supply might have been a throw-back to coil sprung, rebuildable, pressure plates.

With a 'atmospheric' shot like this - the camera/phone sets it's exposure for the bright sky, thus poor Jade is in darkness.
A trick to try is to turn on the flash - it's known as fill in flash and will light up a subject a couple of metres away.
In this case - the flash might bounce off the side of Franky and be too bright, flaring... or if Jade is looking right at you, she might have spooky eyes .
