Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

I had a large German Shepherd some years ago who used to pull like mad. I tried a Halti but it did not work, just rubbed a lot of fur off his muzzle. I found the only thing that worked was the harness, around his chest. It seems an instinctive thing to pull if there is pressure around the neck, though most dogs overcome it quite quickly.

Likewise, my cocker spaniel pulls like a train but, with his lead attached to the ring on the front of his harness, he only pulls like a mule :-)

Yes with the harness she is a lot better
But with the neck collar she pulls to the point she's choking herself

you sure your bites are not sand flies i got badly bitten by them in normandy a couple of years ago

Could have been as I've not had any fresh bites the last 2 days while away from the coast.
Jade does seem to stop and scratch herself to bits on the beach too so maybe it was.

We were planning to visit the Alpujarra next but have decided to give it a miss for a week or so because of the weather. We are a bit east of Granada at the moment at Camping Alto de Viñuelas but are going to move on to the Cabo de Gata today and probably stay there until things improve weatherwise then go to the Alpujarra. It may not be much better by the sea but at least our dog Charlie will be able to have a swim. :)

It's looking not bad up here this morning. Bit cool at 8° but it's dry and the sun is out so will see what comes of the day.
Cabo de gata is nice
No idea where I'm going today just follow this road and see where it goes ....i do want to end up in Granada tommorow though

Years ago we used a halti with our two strong labs. They didn’t like them, they’d try to get them off with their paws but it was the only way we could walk them safely.
Luckily, where we live, Yogi doesn’t often need to be on the lead as he’s a rescue and a puller.
As Jade is so young and you have time I would watch loads of YouTube videos about how to train her not to pull ....

Yes I've been watching a few youtube videos on different aspects of training....as with everything though there's lots of conflicting stuff. I think it's mostly trial and error.
She is certainly better with the harness than the collar which is fine we're getting there

As I said earlier I hate to see a Halti on a dog.
I suppose they’re ok for training but people put them on all the time & you see dogs fighting to get them off & usually they’re too tight round the muzzle!
Personally I would ban them!:)
Sorry but that's just how I feel about the Halti.

Better weather this morning

The Alpujarra is spectacular if you are lucky with the weather. These two villages, Capileira and Bubión are in one of your photographs. There is a small aire without facilities in Capileira apparently. :)

be back to driving over lemons if he keeps going west.

with the halti we used the dog could still eat etc even with it on . only got tight on its muzzle when you pulled the lead. there was a sort of slide loop on it .
must say i thought it nicer than a choker chain that used to be the way to train a dog .
guess perhaps the design as been changed .

On the road to la calahorra at the minute

Beautiful sunny day and getting warm just passed a lovely wee village "valor" topped up water from a natural spring

Tam, a few messages back there was talk of sandflies. Apparently that is a misnomer, they aren't only found on the beach but well inland in undergrowth and long grass.
They are what leads to "heart worm " in dogs, please buy Jade a Scalibor collar.

Unfortunately there will always be owners out there who see something and do it without checking to see how its done properly - a tight halti, a slip lead where the rubber stop is so tight to the neck that the dog has trouble breathing, screaming at the dog so that it doesn't want to come back and then punishing when it finally does... and so on!

I don't know if there are different Halti head collars?

The one we have is loose over the nose and only tightens if the dog pulls. If you have a very fit and fairly large dog (ours weights 23kg) it can be dangerous not to have control over them. I've literally been pulled over and dragged by our larger than average Border Collie when he gave chase to a cat (when wearing an ordinary collar). Luckily no harm was done but had I been on a road I might not have got away unscathed.

w that road well. we have gone north on that road then headed to guadix then up to cuevas del campo by the lake then north to go up through cazorla national park. half way beteen cuenca and tiscar don -pedro there is a track on the right . bit bumpy but a great drive through the forest and the park. later joins the a319 .never know what you will see ,wild boars ,red squirrels . red deer .
mind all the smaller roads in spain lead to a great adventure .

Heartworm is caused by mosquitoes I believe but sandflies can spread Lieshmaniasis. There is no 100% effective cure for this disease if a dog catches it. The treatment is prolonged, daily injections for perhaps 6 weeks and for some dogs they may need to keep taking medication for the rest of their lives and the disease may still reoccur. There is a vaccine but that isn't 100% effective either. :(
But as you say sandflies are not confined to the coast and occur inland. The disease is also a significant threat to humans but fortunately there is effective treatment for it in humans.

I'm sat outside the vets in guadix hoping it opens at 5pm so I can get one of these collars .....otherwise it's Granada in a day or two.

It's boiling today ...the daft weather app on my phone says 18 which I thought was rubbish as I'm sweating and that don't happen at 18
But this electronic sign outside the farmacia says 28° which is more like It if say

I hate when I buy anything in a Spanish shop that doesn't have a price on it ...im sure they just look at you and name a figure they think they can get away with
Damm collar cost me 25€
Only 13€ online
And they only come in white
Guess she'll have to wear 2 collars

great chap though .

So glad you've bought her a Scalibor collar Tam, I guess the cost is a bit the luck of the draw, on-line things are always cheaper. But they last for 6 month, so it still works out pretty cheap on a daily basis.
You need to fit it pretty snugly just under her throat, at the top of her neck, so it has maximum skin contact. You will be amazed how it will vanish from sight even on a short coated little black person.
Also when snugly fitted there is less chance of it getting caught up on twigs and undergrowth.

Just in case they didn't mention it the collar is supposed to be taken off if the dog goes swimming. I don't think a quick wetting matters but if going to a beach or a lake and assuming Jade likes a paddle it would be best removed. :)

To be honest she doesn't seem that keen on the water at the minute but that might change , she tends to go look at the surfeit runs away if it touches her.
Doesn't seem to bothered by the extra collar either.
But she's in the huff with me today cause I told her off earlier ...so I just keep getting sad eyes flicked at me

Ours doesn't like waves either!
