Tam & co the great winter escape

I'm sure Tam is more than capable of training Ela, it will just take time and patience and whilst he's already p'd off due to the issue with the van and the weather the dogs will sense this tension, I'm sure after a bit of time both he and Ela will be fine, he wouldn't have got this far if he was going to throw the towel in for real.

I'm going to risk your wrath and say "you better not abandon her". You've taken her from a place she knew where she had the company of other dogs she knew and seemingly quite a few visiting travellers who fed her from time to time. Not an ideal life by our standards but the life she knew. As has been said, adopting her in your circumstances was a huge undertaking and was always going to require tons of work and patience.
I won't be able to read your thread any more if you give up on her. Not that you'd notice of course 😀
Karen

are you for real , this must be the most inappropriate post I’ve read on fun

the man’s having a bad day at work & doesn't need you dumping on him 🤕

Not at all, I met up with Tam a few years ago in Spain (with Busman Dave) and took an instant liking to him and the little black and white pup he adopted. We shared a coffee and a chat at a beach bar before moving on. Greece weather was discussed in his recent posts and I was just keeping him up to date with UK news reports.
I think you took my post far to seriously Phil.

If you have to resort to using something that is 'extremely unpleasant' then there's something wrong with the training being given, there shouldn't be any need ever to cause pain in order to train.

That's the owners issue, a lot don't have a clue how to deal with dogs who have unacceptable behaviour so instead of consulting a qualified dog trainer they try to do it themselves with what is in effect an 'offensive weapon'.

If you don't believe me then watch some of the dog training programmes, the ones called "Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly" is very, very good.
I think if you can save a dog from getting killed, by subjecting them to two days of unpleasant training then that is as a last resort instrument a very good outcome, two days in a average 12 year life seems wel worth it, I respect however that some people rather have their difficult dog on a lead at all times all of their lives, but that is something I find cruel, same as my horses are roaming wild in 50 acres for most of their lives, a lot more humane then all those people who think it is good treatment to put their horses in a 10 by 10 ft box for 23 hrs a day, complete madness ……..

Here's what Tam needs just now, something to scream sing along with, I even found him a modern version of this classic song, keep your pecker up mate.(y)there's also some of your old classmate's on this video.

Sorry, as before I can't agree with you ... it may take longer with other methods but inflicting pain is not something I'd ever condone.

No, what is cruel is the owner not getting the issue resolved through proper training, it would be these irresponsible owners who would happily use the 'easier' (for them) pain inflicting method and likely keep using it, it won't do anything for the relationship of the dog and owner IMV.

Now that is something I do agree with, no different to keeping a rabbit caged up all the time etc.

Having seen and tried to catch roaming/ stray or escaped dogs, if they don't want to be caught you won't catch them. 🤔
This dog was roaming Javea restaurants were feeding him, dogs played with him on the beach, he liked our Izzy and would get within touching distance but you could never get hold of him even top shelf treats never worked. 😁
It took lots of people a couple of months to catch him. 🤔

Good luck Tam, whatever the outcome people can't say you never tried. 👍 Bob.

Nothing works .... absolutely nothing ive tried this every time she has done this . We are on a beach theres far more interesting things for her to go eating and sniffing at. Im afraid im fast running out of patience with her ...its nearly 2 months now and i still can't get her to come ...she doesn't even look up when i call her name . She will hang around the van for sure but i can't get hold of her ..she knows to keep a certain distance from me every other time she's done this its been jackie who got hold of her. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don't know whats happened in her past to cause this but she simply will not come regardless of what treats etc i try to coax her with. The only time she comes is when shes attached to a rope or lead and i tug it and reel her in saying come ....and even then its only for a treat. She's still as nervous and flighty off the lead as she was when i found her. And now she's chasing cars just to make things worse 🤦‍♂️
My dog kept chasing people on a bike.......
It got so bad that I had to take the bike off him... :Eeek:

Don't be ridiculous id never abandon her.

Im Scottish ....i have over £200 invested in this dog ....theres no way id abandon her when theres dog fighting gangs offering good money for bait 😁

Joking aside ...please give me some credit. Ive no intention in abandoning her , im also aware it isnt the dogs fault. But that doesn't ease the frustration any when ive tried everything i can think of to get her to come and to understand im not going to hurt her etc. I need to vent that frustration as i am no saint and with all the goodwill in the world i cant sit outside in the cold trying to talk sweet to a dog thats simply ignoring me.

Im trying my best ....its all i can do and at the end of the day if it turns out that i can't manage to train her with my other 2 then i will seek a good home for her back in the uk where at least she will be looked after. That isn't what i want as im already very attached to her ....i love all my dogs but in the end I'll do whats best for Ela.

Anyway i managed to finally get a hold of her last night by petting the small dog she was playing on the beach with ....she off course got jealous and came close enough for me to catch hold of her collar. Unfortunately that will be something else she will now be wary of should the same thing happen again.

But i got her in thats the main thing and that was that .... only she decided to poo on the van floor this morning which she has never done so im thinking she might be trying to tell me something. ....but she's also had the trots ever since so im suspecting in the time she was running loose she's eaten something that hasn't agreed with her.

On the other problems ...it was a lot milder last night so i got away with not using the diesel heater ...after cooking dinner the van was warm enough to just cope with my hot water bottle.

After our walk this morning i found a level concrete carpark and took the rear wheels off again. Amazingly i discovered it wasn't the n/s rear where i could have sworn the noise was coming from but the o/s and the inner pad was down to the metal. It would appear the sliders on the caliper have been sticking and thats caused the one pad to wear down. It doesn't help that the bolts that go through the sliders the top one has rounded off so i couldn't get the bolt out. But i did manage to wind the piston back so at least the caliper itself is not seized. It isnt like the ducato after all and it only has pads to operate both service and parking brake. The disc is damaged but saveable at present but i do need pads desperately and will have to hope that greasing the sliders will do for now.

Because of the state of the pads and the fact im miles away from a big town/city ive had to do a botch job just now of isolating the caliper so i don't do anymore damage. Ive done that by clamping the flexi hose with mole grips and cable tying them in place for now. That stops that caliper working when i press the brakes so only braking on 3 wheels at present. Ive driven about 10 miles since and it seems to be fine for now as long as i take it easy. I also can't use the handbrake for now . Hopefully i can get pads in Thessaloniki and that will be that.

Stopped for lunch at present at another beach near Katerina and will take dogs another walk before heading north. I doubt i will make Thessaloniki tonight though but will see.

What is she up to this morning?
Have you got her back now?
Well, is she home or not?? I can't be the only one that didn't sleep well last night for worrying...
Yes she's been back since late last night ... she's just the same as usual . I didn't make a big deal of it once i got her i just brought her in the van and got on with making dinner. No point having a discussion with her as she doesn't understand. Right now she's chewing milos ear while i make lunch

So glad she is back with you, Good luck with the brakes.

Northernraider Going back to the car theme on your thread, this was spotted whilst out riding my bike in Southport. Looks like it’s not been moved in a long time, maybe it belongs to the house it was parked in front of 🤷🏻‍♀️. I wondered if it will ever run again. Bet it could be restored really nicely.

Not as bad as those you photographed Tam but it reminded me of that part of your thread.
