Tam & co the great winter escape

I think it's all to do with space. When I had my smallholding, vehicles and projects were scattered all over, now I live in a 3 bed house,
its all contained in sheds. I never should have sold the smallholding! :crying:

Well that wasn't a pleasant night it got down to minus 9 last night. I had the diesel heater on most of last evening so it was warm enough before i went to bed. My sleeping bag is also a good one so warm enough inside it when i went to bed and of course ive 3 hot water bottles to help. But i woke up at 4am needing a wee so i had to get up ....-9 and inside the van was -5 ...so i thought id set the diesel heater to 10° just to keep it a bit warmer ...got back in to bed and about an hour later the heater was just powering up and switching back off again ... Had a look at battery voltage and i was down to 11.5v so had to just switch it off. My phone had also switched itself off at this point and declared itself flat battery despite it being fully charged when i went to bed 🤷🏻‍♂️ fortunately its a sunny day so this crappy solar panel is putting something in at least but i dont expect it to fully charge them. Looks like my water tank or pipes have frozen too as nothing coming out the taps . Didn't have water heater on so im hoping that hasn't been damaged. Ive switched it on now incase its frozen but i think i might have to drain down the water and just use bottled till the temperatures rise a bit again . I also need to find a parts store today and try and get rear brake pads as the NS is really making a grinding noise now ....i checked all the brakes when i bought this and it had had new ones quite recently aswell as a caliper on that side so really didnt expect them to be worn in only 4000 miles . This is the not fun downside to vanlife when it becomes unpleasant.

Hopefully this cold spell doesn't last much longer.

What i love about greece is its laid back couldn't care less attitude. Its not clinical, its rough , unkept ....it has character. I think the uk ... certainly Scotland was more like that when i was a kid in the 70's and 80's . Now we have auto recycling centres . ....clean air zones , pedestrian zones etc ..all of which are meant to make things better.

Personally i like greece, Portugal and parts of spain for the fact that they dont strive to make everything perfect ...but in truth just make this worse.

I like seeing the old abandoned buildings , cars and machinery etc lying around
I’m with you Tam

I’m sure when you do the brakes you’ll give them a good clean down, you must be thinking they have been binding to wear so quickly..🤔

No idea ...im at the parts place now and typically there are 2 types. 1 he has here the other would take 3 days . So im parked across the street now about to take of the wheel to check . Hopefully its the ones here otherwise im in trouble .

I'm not 'mechanically' experienced so am only familiar with certain things to do with vehicle gubbings but wonder if the brake shoes could have dislodged and be causing the noise rather than being worn?

I should have written earlier because all it might be is a trapped stone or bit of grit between the caliper and disc?

I’m with you on this one, calliper piston binding is common with off road grime conditions. I will make sure those pistons move in and out and not seized.

I watch these YouTube videos and I’m always amazed at the cars and trucks in various conditions around America

Saw on a documentary that in the south away from the coast - no salt and little rain. Loads of old cars in good condition.

Have you got a nice tasty tit bit to tempt her with, a freshly cooked sausage for example?

Nothing works .... absolutely nothing ive tried this every time she has done this . We are on a beach theres far more interesting things for her to go eating and sniffing at. Im afraid im fast running out of patience with her ...its nearly 2 months now and i still can't get her to come ...she doesn't even look up when i call her name . She will hang around the van for sure but i can't get hold of her ..she knows to keep a certain distance from me every other time she's done this its been jackie who got hold of her. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don't know whats happened in her past to cause this but she simply will not come regardless of what treats etc i try to coax her with. The only time she comes is when shes attached to a rope or lead and i tug it and reel her in saying come ....and even then its only for a treat. She's still as nervous and flighty off the lead as she was when i found her. And now she's chasing cars just to make things worse 🤦‍♂️

If it's any consolation Minky is still a s*d, she'll come sometimes but often just ignores us, it doesn't help when there is more 'interesting' stuff around and/or she wants to see what the other dogs are up to. Two months is no time at all to be fair and with the outside being so familiar to her all you can do is try to make yourself as 'interesting' as possible so she want to be with you ... how you do that is down to you though although getting down on the floor and rolling round and being daft does help! :giggle:

That seems to be inbuilt with all Greek wild dogs, when she gets hungry she will come back maybe worth ignoring her & just keep your eye on her.
Its hard to do thats the problem ... especially when theres cars going back and forth etc ... she keeps coming back to the van she just wont come in thats the problem. But theres no point in me keeping trying to get her as she just gets worse. Can't leave the door open all the time either as its freezing and the other 2 will end up going chasing after her .

Sometimes i could kick myself for getting myself in these situations

How about walking away and having a good old play with the other dogs so she sees what she's missing?

Have you tried putting the other 2 on leads and attaching them inside so they can't get out, the leaving the hab door open and starting the camper? We had to do this with one of our other dogs a few times when he was in his stubborn mode and wouldn't come in.

Done that in the first place

Honestly i already try all these things people suggest .... the only way i could get her is with a net or i just have to leave her out all night and see if that gives her a wake up call ....i don't know what else to try .. obviously she has been in this situation before either with a previous owner or people on the beach or even perhaps the woman who neutered her ....i don't know . But she knows to keep a distance away and she can move way faster than i can .

All this talk about dogs, we want to know whats happening with the brakes.
I took the wheel off outside the parts place . The pads on this are the ones he doesn't have 🤷🏻‍♂️ .... but the pads themselves look ok and nothing obviously stuck in them . I couldn't do much else at that point due to where i was stopped. So i planned to drive to somewhere and stay overnight and take the wheel off again tomorrow and strip the brakes down. It has the same settup as the ducato so it has shoes inside for the handbrake but it could be them thats causing the grinding when i brake ...i couldn't see or hear anything when i had wheel off earlier but i need to remove the caliper etc and look inside the disc/drum ...but then i got distracted with this muppet wrapping herself round a tree and managing somehow to get out her harness. Now im preoccupied trying to catch her ....to no avail.

Im sat with the door open at the minute to see if she eventually comes in but as soon as its dark she's getting left as im rapidly losing patience with her.
