Tam & co the great winter escape

A problem that will only escalate when all these new dog owners realise that to look after dogs you have to put serious commitment in.They don't only need exercise when the weather is nice..BUSBY.
Keeps my Niece in a job as a dog walker + her 7 collegues .
I Cannot remember the last time a saw a street dog in the U.K?

Loads of dogs in uk need rehoming
,,Bit like refugees I have loads of sympathy but we need to put our own house in order first,,BUSBY.
Yes but they are in sanctuaries not on the streets & not that many in reality. + we like dogs, nothing like refugee's.
Quite agree but didn't want to seem argumentative, can't understand these places that send dogs over here from other countries when we have enough already.
Try getting a dog from a rehoming place in the Uk . You wouldn't get one being a pensioner. nor will many who go out to work & leave them. Then you need a decent income; your home has to be inspected etc;etc,

exactly, & completely different from the situation in most european countries.

It's the argument that we shouldn't accept refugees or asylum seekers whilst we still have the homeless on our streets or pensioners who have to choose between being warm or being hungry.

I've volunteered at several rspca and private rescue centres in the uk and in terms of dogs anyway there isn't a huge surplus at all which is why the rescues can be super picky. I also used to carry out the home checks and my family have rescued several animals and there are many hoops to jump through.

So it's just yet more prejudice and pointless nationalism to say 'we should look after our own 1st'

The last rspca home i volunteered at the majority of dogs were rehomed within a week and they were having to import dogs from Ireland to keep up with demand. When the time comes I will definitely be rehoming a dog from Spain or Portugal as there are far more dogs in need there and the same goes for humans if you must drag that topic up yet again!

There must be comments on here that i can't see which is very annoying as its my own blooming thread.

We have re-homed one dog that was put in for re-homing by a young couple who only had a flat and could not cope with the dog in that situation. Purdy was the most delightful Shetland Sheep dog who lived out her natural life with us. When she was no longer able to enjoy her walks I made a box for the back of my bicycle, put a pillow in it and she used to love going out for a ride. We did the Tarka trail and also the promenade between Blackpool and Fleetwood to name 2 memorable rides.

I am also aware of only one story of a stray dog re-homed by a friend who found a puppy tied to a public bench on the seafront at Teignmouth in the days after Xmas years ago. The anonymous Springer was then named "Cracker" and kept by the Optometrist who found him after duly advertising for the owners locally to no avail. Cracker had a wonderful life and certainly found his feet in a very loving home.

Sorry but I will always prefer dogs to cats and it annoys me greatly that they can use our garden as their shit hole, with no by your leave!

So we don't need any more in the uk..Nice to know rescue centres do proper checks to ensure or try to ensure the dogs don't land up back in the rescue centres..BUSBY.

Refugees and asylum seekers are two different things.BUSBY.

Came up on my local Facebook page that a Romanian rescue dog had escaped its new owners, as you say what about local strays 🤔

So, are you saying that IF you adopt one from abroad you don't have to go through these, what I would have thought, sensible checks?? Just asking because after I got a certain age, I decided not to have another dog.

So Tam, has the weather settled down? We've had a real $hi1tty day here.
It rained pretty much non stop yesterday from around 1.30pm till way after i went to bed .... Its a bit brighter today and the forecast did say its supposed to be ok today till later this evening but we will see. It's not cold at least but im getting fed up with the rain .

We was on a campsite in Gandia many years ago, a stray came on site and as Janie went to the toilet block said hello and fussed it, 😯 it followed her into the toilet block she shut the toilet door but it came underneath. 😁

She came back to the pitch dog decided to sleep under our van at night, and slept on our trailer in day time, trouble was it started guarding our pitch and growling at anyone who came near it, people were telling us to put it on a lead, we said it's not our dog, next thing the police came and took it away, lovely dog and they knew where it came from. 😁

I won't mention :sun: :sun: :sun: but its here. 😎 Bob.

Might be me but does this mean you took the Dog in🤔
The last thing I want to do is turn this into a dog thread, but just how does anyone know they are actually strays, I have spent many a week in the hills above the Algarve, and there are dogs everywhere running wild but at night you can gaurantee they all go home.

Thats the answer charlie ....here they dont go home , they are with you day and night for however long you stay.

Im currently playing the long game of trying to make friends with this one ,she (i think its a she ) will come close and will take food from my hand but is very very wary and nervous ...trying to touch her is very difficult. I think she's very young brilliant white teeth ....a little thin but otherwise looks reasonably healthy .

My take on it is that there are those that wander the Spanish in particular turn them out in the day not all but many do. As Tam is experiencing on a number of his stops, Strays somehow form groups and wander in packs which often brings its own problems as we know.
My Dog was a stray at three months old abandoned by Hunters as he was too young to keep up, l came upon him early on a Sunday morning very thin and very hungry but he wouldn’t enter the house just hung around in the garden until l got his confidence.
That was ten years ago and now he never leaves my side hes a part of our lives and brings us joy every day even though him being a Terrier and when in a bad mood will try and nip me.

thank god I'm not there..........the wife would be spending a fortune feeding them all and I can guarantee there'd be some in the van on the way home, she's bad enough in Spain and Portugal
Yeah both jackie and i carry extra dog food with us....not expensive though ,jackie buys big tins of meat that are about €1 each and i tend to get the bags of dry food thats €2 for 2 or 3kg .
That gives a few dogs a decent meal ... although jackie actually cooked a big pot of lentils for that family of dogs the other day 🤣

still all sorts of hoops to jmp throgh but not on the UK scale+ you are paying for all the jabs, tests, rabies , passport etc to get them home.

Not here, they just go to there hidey holes during the day.
