Tam & co the great winter escape

I am told that the water tank actually sang to Tam as it dislodged..............

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer where the feeling stays
I want to love you but I'm getting blown away
Can I have some of whatever you’re smoking, please? 🤪🤪

So after a doggy walk this morning i headed over to the marina to grab a shower ....it says on the door €0.50 for 10 minutes , €10 deposit for keycard for hot water.

So i went in to office and asked for a card , this stuck up barbie asked what boat i was on ....i said no boat im in a camper van i just want to use the shower. ...she says you can't use it as its a private marina ....i asked what was the difference? Anyone can walk in off the street , can use the atm , the shops, buy a beer , have some food , use the toilets ,handbasins etc .....so which bit exactly is private?

She just blanked me and raised her hands in the air

So i had my shower anyway ....granted it was only cold water but sod that for bullsheeite ....

I swear if i could have forced one out id have left a steaming log on the shower basin 😁🤣🤣

Never heard anything so stupid in all my life

Jackie never thought to just use the cold shower lol ...she washed her hair in the bathroom sinks 🤣

I don't see the difference in who uses the showers if you leave a deposit and pay for it .....the toilets etc are not locked and i'll guarantee in the summer etc theres hundreds of people using them.
Good on yer Tam.(y)

I guess they wouldnt want us common motor home folk getting in the way of the posh Yachtists

To be fair to the lady she was probably just passing on the orders and she would probably get a reet bollickin if she had let you in

You should have said you were with Rod Stewart and were just waiting for him
So the morel of the story is, Tell Lies, what a great world we live in.:(

Ive managed to tie the tank back in place for now with 2 bungee cords but the first hardware shop i see ill try to get either ratchet straps or some steel strapping. Unless i can find a drain tap for it though i wont be able to use the tank as the tap obviously broke off when it fell as ive just the hole where it was.
In that part of the world, how about a big cork and some gaffer tape to hold it in? :giggle: You'll find something! Take care!
I was about to suggest that too, or something similar - for our waste water tank getting to the indoor release lever is a pain as it's in the underfloor area under a big hatch so we leave the lever in the open position and I made a bung from a push-on rubber type hosepipe tap attachment which I filled blocked the centre of and used gaffer tape to get a good tight fit. I has never come out even with loads of water in it.

At a launderette now run by a german guy ....he started it last year and also rehomes stray dogs and rescues them and castrates them etc ...i will post up the details later in case anyone in this area and wants to help out .

In truth this is something ive thought about a lot about doing something similar.

I cant possibly adopt every stray dog myself but i have thought about how i could perhaps start a refuge somewhere like this . Combine 2 things bu escaping the cold uk and perhaps helping to find homes for some of these dogs .

Either renting or buying a small piece of land. Im just not sure how to do it ....but this guy is also a vanlifer and he did it

That's a fantastic ambition to have, helping animals is definitely worthwhile.
Have you watched Tread the Globe and seen the turtle sanctuary they helped establish in Turkey ? Amazing what they achieved but they have an enthusiastic local to manage it day to day although Chris and Marieannes efforts raised a considerable amount of much needed cash.
Maybe helping out the guy you met could be the answer ?

Tam, I think that's a fantastic idea! Our second Spanish rescue dog is due to arrive in the UK next week. She's a Podenco, aged around 12 months, found wandering on the roadside by a Brit-run rescue in Spain.

There's so much cruelty and neglect of dogs in southern Europe.

You can read online about the plight of Galgos and Podencos in Spain. It's horrendous how they are treated by their hunter owners.

Tam, take a look at this rescue in Crete. Takis started off with a small bit of land near the rubbish dump, a few dogs and only a bike for transport. He now has around 500 dogs, much more land, staff and thousands if not millions of followers. I have visited his shelter several times and he does a fantastic job. Here's the backstory taken from his facebook page.

Takis was passing from the rubbish area of his hometown Ierapetra Greece and that changed his life. There he found a dog with a broken leg that he started to take care. Soon he was taking care of 40 dogs in that area. People started threatening him so Takis bought a land and built Takis shelter in 2013. Soon Takis’ money run out and he had no help from local authorities or from the government. He created this facebook page in 2015 so that people can see his work and donate. Takis is running the shelter alone and the shelter is running 100% from donations. The shelter now hosts more than 350 dogs, 50 cats, 6 goats and 2 sheep. The monthly expenses of the shelter are around 8.000 euros.
The situation in Greece is very difficult concerning animals. The economic crisis caused a lot of people to abandon their dogs on the streets and because Greeks did not castrate their pets these dogs multiplied and now there are thousants of stray dogs and cats in Greece and thousants more are being born every day. Most of them wander the streets, malnurished in terrible condition and the government does nothing. So the burdain falls on Greek people to help. Many help but many look away and do not care. Takis has devoted his life into helping the animals in Greece and also helping people change their attitude towards them.
Takis shelter needs first and foremost people to adopt its dogs and cats. Takis wants to do responsible adoptions so that his dogs and cats never suffer again. For this reason he doesn’t ship animals. If you want to adopt an animal from Takis Shelter you will have to book a flight to Crete, visit the shelter, see the dogs and then choose and take the animal home with you.
If you cannot adopt you can donate. Even the smallest donation counts.

I think what this guy does is a good idea , he has created a small laundarette which is serviced or you can do it yourself , he also offers hot shower for €2 , he has , second hand books ,clothes , camping equipment and general bric a brac available for donations , he has a small food van for coffee ,tea etc or soft drinks and beer , spaces to chill out and donation tins. He has around 8 dogs here at present but he has so far rehomed 16 to Germany. And hes only been here 1 year . It very much attracts Travelers and vanlifers as it provides a service and a reason to stop ....and of course then when people meet the dogs they may well donate or adopt ..

I think i could do something similar ....he only rents this place so i cant imagine a very large innitial outlay.

He and his girlfriend stay here in their separate vans ...and theres currently a german couple here helping him out and parking on the land .

Ah i love the one 2nd from last. Maybe you could look into Greek citizenship on this trip.

Finally dragged myself away from all the doggies ...ive been to the hardware store and hopefully got everything i need to fix my water tank ...and all for less than 7 euro ...i have 10 metres of galvanized strapping , a couple of new clips to reattach the filler pipe and a threaded bit pipe with a blanking plug to put where my drain tap was .

This is the details for the laundry place.....please if you are ever in this area and can use any of their services or even if you would simply like to give them a small donation. ...i can vouch for the fact he's a great guy and all the dogs here are in good health and looked after .... I love what he's doing and im going to seriously look in to doing something similar once i have my vario built and ready to live in.

Yes mine too ...very disappointed as it was a lovely spot and a nice little town .

Ive driven a little south to karivostasi and another little bay ... hopefully I get left in peace here ...jackie is still in igoumenitsa at the vodaphone shop trying to sort out her internet .
The first 3 photos are from sivota ....the others are from where i am now .

Can i ask a favour of those who follow my polarsteps to leave at least a like on the steps i post on it so it seems worthwhile doing it ....at the minute it looks like only 4 or 5 people actually view them View attachment 561595View attachment 561596View attachment 561597View attachment 561598View attachment 561599View attachment 561600View attachment 561601View attachment 561602View attachment 561603View attachment 561604

I think from here im going to head inland a little this time as i would like to see the meteora monestaries and try to take pics with the drone before i head any further south . Depending whether i get moved on from here will decide whether i head that way tomorrow or Wednesday as im a little weary from driving.

Sea is amazing here ...
I’m following Polarsteps 🤣

Often wondered. How do solar panels cope with hailstones?

Do they bark ? my dog barks at thunder and it drives me mad. Continental thunder storms also seem to go on all night unlike ours which are nearly all over in half an hour.
No they just come over and snuggle in to me ....i try not to encourage their fears i just pretend everything is normal and hope they pick up on that ..

But theres been a storm nearly every day for weeks now ...and yes they last for hours . Never seen as many as i have this year.

Wet start this morning and then the sun came out for an hour then back to rain ☹️ so im hibernating in the van witha book. Jackie is off ro kiparisi to look for a phone shop to buy a sim card as vodaphone has cut her off again till the 15th . It seems she doesn't get to use all her data abroad afterall which i did wonder about as very few let you do that nowadays

A bit fed up with the rain to be honest but i think its much the same all over just now

Crikey we are now getting serious hail...lumps the size of grapes ...and thunder n lightening you can feel the ground moving . Dogs are crapping themselves.
Tiddles you need to worry when they are the size of golf balls, now they really hurt if you get hit by them.

Quite agree but didn't want to seem argumentative, can't understand these places that send dogs over here from other countries when we have enough already.

A problem that will only escalate when all these new dog owners realise that to look after dogs you have to put serious commitment in.They don't only need exercise when the weather is nice..BUSBY.
