Tam & co the great winter escape

Just for a change from dog posts ...

This german guy in the blue and white sprinter was here the whole time i was here last November ...and again in february and again this time ...exact same spot . He has a washing line , sattelite dish and a wee bamboo built gazebo 😁 ...i seriously wonder if he's been here the whole time View attachment 564216

The caravan is towed by a wine coloured cathargo malibu ...it left this morning but left the caravan here .
Looks like he's a fully paid up FLT.

Yeah both jackie and i carry extra dog food with us....not expensive though ,jackie buys big tins of meat that are about €1 each and i tend to get the bags of dry food thats €2 for 2 or 3kg .
That gives a few dogs a decent meal ... although jackie actually cooked a big pot of lentils for that family of dogs the other day 🤣
thats what the wife does....we take our own dog food with us for our dogs but every time we leave a super market in Spain there's always a big bag of what ever for the strays in the trolly

At least the rain stopped for a bit .....jackie feeding the shepherds ..joined by an ex german police bus .

Veering off topic again, as you do

Is that a BakRak that Jackie has on the towbar of her van? Can you ask her how she's getting on with it, I was thinking of one for my van.

Pete

Quite agree but didn't want to seem argumentative, can't understand these places that send dogs over here from other countries when we have enough already.
everytime some one tells me their dog is a foreign rescue i immediately say couldn't find one you liked here?although i do see the atraction of gaining a pet without having to pay or jump through hoops to get one here

Unfortunately its not that easy to get a dog in the UK as has been mentioned previously. When we wanted another we scoured the rescues within 100 miles of us and there was nothing suitable - too big, too old (had to be young enough to get on with ours) etc. In the end we paid £900 for our Minky from just over the Humber so not a massive distance in the end, if we'd got one from a rescue centre we'd have paid nothing like that but it just wasn't an option as we wanted the 'type' of dog that would 'fit' in with our existing family.

Heres my view

Most shelters in the uk will never put a healthy dog down , most have lots of funding either through charities or other means , the dogs are safe and looked after, the shelters seem to want to keep them rather than let perfectly good people adopt them .

Theres very few stray dogs on the streets these days in the uk .

Whereas here theres literally thousands of dogs on the streets , many in a poor state of health , most are not sterilised so the problem increases constantly , theres very few shelters here and those that exist struggle financially , many get destroyed because no one can afford to keep them.

There's no shelter in the uk that would ever have given me a dog because i live in a van 🤷🏻‍♂️

Many of these dogs have little chance of growing old or leading a healthy life if not rescued . They don't have a paul o grady to put them on tv etc

P.s none of the foreign rescues are free and most will cost more than one in the uk ...normally between £250 -500

P.p.s its not just brits , from what sylvia told me most of the Spanish strays go to Germany ,holland and france .
From here i saw several dogs being rescued last year ,both the french guys renau and stefan rescued dogs, Arno the german rescued one , this year ive met a Norwegian who adopted a pup and an italian couple who adopted a shepherd, and theres many of the germans parked here just nowwho have dogs that i reckon are all rescues.

Very rarely see a proper breed dog with people here. They all look like rescues

Not sure if you meant me or someone else veering off topic

But im in the same place for a few days ... there's not much else to discuss to be honest , im at a beach , its mostly raining , theres a few vans around , and quite a few stray dogs ......thats pretty much the highlights for now till i decide where im going to head next ....the weather is currently crap all over greece and turkey and looks much the same for the next week. ....not a lot to do in the rain so not much to report

As for the rack im Not sure of the make i will ask her tomorrow .i think she said it cost £200 . It seems quite handy and you can carry bikes or a box or a tent etc , its quick release and can fold up or down .

Just ignore me Tam, just me trying to be funny 😊
Hope the weather perks up for you soon.
Be grateful if you could ask Jackie about the rack, its good to have first hand feedback for a product.

As Tam says it still costs money even if you pick it p yourself. If you use a rescue centre & they deliver it to the UK, (I don't even know whether they still do now?) it costs a lot

Yes down here most go to those countries. Holland due to the law there that forbids breeding, all dogs have to be spayed so if you want a dog it has to be imported. Germany quite a few go to the american bases & onward to the U.S. Friend of mine used to help with the driving for deliveries.

a friend of mine who's bred and had working spaniels all his life lost his two recently to illness just six months apart so went to the spaniel rescue centre to adopt another couple, even though they had eight dogs in they refused him because even though he lives in a detached bungalow in three acres of land ........it wasn't fenced off securely enough.......thats what your up against !

In the Netherlands there is not a law where all dogs need to be spayed at all, there is however a requirement that you register if you are breeding, also when it is a one off as a hobby, there are lots of requirements to make sure that breeding doesn’t find place with parents which are not healthy to avoid birth defects , for cats and dogs there is now the additional rule that there is only one litter in any 12 month period.

In the late 90’s friends of mine went on holiday to Greece, flying from Amsterdam to Chios , they rescued two Sheppard cross ? puppies , they did hide them and took them through all security into the plane and managed to get away with it lol😎, no chance of that happening these days🤣😆

Same for my Dad, beautiful property in the countryside but he had to pay thousands to get it fenced before he could adopt a rescue. He did though most would just buy a puppy from a breeder or farm instead as cheaper.

Good ferry route from Piraeus - Chios - Cesme if you're still heading to Turkey Tam, cuts out the run up to Ipsala. 😊

And the rescue centres have disclaimers regarding if there are children or visiting children. I understand why they say this (I think) but it seems to add another reason for a home being unsuitable.

How come you are in Greece and these dogs are barking in English ?? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: I understood every bark.
I think dogs are multilingual

Pete is right, but check the price as the ferries between Greece and Turkey can be a bit expensive for the distance.

Also when on board the crew can try to extort extra 'taxes' - I took a Turkish one to Kos and they came round claiming an extra €10 for 'Greek Port Fees', so I said in a very loud voice 'Then I will pay it to the Greek Port Authorities', so knowing I was ruining his scam he quickly moved on for easier pickings.

Tam, if you could hook up to the caravan and move close to an airport, some of us might be able to come over and spend Christmas with you?😀😀
