Tam & co the great winter escape

Some random thoughts having just caught up with the thread:

You're right to sell the Vario. IMV self-build has to be done for its own sake, as a hobby, for relaxation and satisfaction, and not something undertaken simply because you need the end result.

Don't part with Ela. You will regret it and your dogs are a big part of what you want to do.

Buy a motorhome that is very near what you want then alter it to make it exactly what you want. If you have, or can source, the skills needed for a self-build then a few mods to a near-perfect motorhome will be a doddle.

Buy one with Alde heating. It is the simplest and easiest to maintain set-up and kit is available to run it from the engine cooling system when travelling. A cheap Eberspacher engine heater (around 5kW output as standard) will operate the system from Diesel. Mine is size of a sandwich box and fits under the vehicle.

The smallest log burner will output far too much heat in a motorhome only surpassed by the amount of filth it generates.

Your immediate goal should be to get back on the road ASAP. This will resolve issues with your Mum and give you peace of mind. Spend money on achieving power self-sufficiency. Apart from the obvious solar & decent batteries add a small generator for now 'cos they're cheap and easily resold. Maybe replaced by a fuel cell long term.

Work: you sound as though delivery driving is something you enjoy/don't mind. Zero hours driving work sounds good for an itinerant with dogs to look after.

Compromise on a bigger van with the facilities & room you need rather than a small one that will go to more places. It will be your home for long periods. You can explore on a bike or scooter.

Feel free to ignore the musings of an armchair traveller 😊.

tonyidle has summed it all up for me! I’m glad you’ve decided to sell the vario, as that would be a big job, even with a covered workshop! Your mum is a saint to have you & all your vehicles on her drive, without tools, welding, grinding etc! All the messing about putting tools away, weather etc means it would not be a pleasant experience! Can’t blame your mum for moaning at Ela - she’s old & set in her ways, & likes a pristine house! Ela doesn’t know what a house is - she’s only just discovered what a Motorhome is - now a caravan, then a house - no wonder she’s peeing everywhere! I’d keep all the dogs in the van as much as you can for a while, even if that means leaving them in there whilst you work - they’ll be fine, they’ve got each other! Glad you’re feeling a bit happier in your decision- whenever we come back from a long trip we always feel up tipped- & we come back to our own house! Also glad you can vent on here - there’s only so much advice the dogs can give! 😂😂

You're musings are pretty spot on to be honest .

In fact now that ive made the decision to sell it and spoken with the buyer of it i actually have a great sense of relief ,

Im not going to rush in to replacing it till i find one that ticks at least 90% of my boxes as i really don't want to be changing it again for a good few years.

I agree that i think bigger with more space is what i need for fulltime living and whatever i buy i will be fitting a bit more solar than previously with a good quality controller and a good btb charger. And dual source heating so a diesel heater will be added.

Ive 3 or 4 vans im interested in i just need to list the pros and cons of each and see what comes up

I don't think modern stoves are dirty, our ecosy certainly isn't.

You can get quite small ones too.

Phew!!!
Been following this thread daily from the off. Vicariously enjoyed your travels. Shared the angst. Worried about Ela. Sympathised with you and your mum. Refrained from putting my oar in (till now!) and listened to most of the thoughtful and caring musings proffered you by the members on this forum.
Just to say - well done on that decision and good luck going forward. I'm sure it will all come good for you eventually!

And im looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

With your skills and tools at your disposal i have high expectations.

It will be nice to actually see my hard work going to some benefit.

Ive jist looked inside it and cried .....where im going to put everything out of it i have no idea

I'll do everything I can to do it justice (y)

I wasn't looking for a new van, but yours being for sale was just too tempting as I know how well the body has been done. Always wanted a Vario - it's the rust that's always put me off. I'll get a really good paint job done asap to protect it all. Can't wait :giggle:

Sounds as if you might be looking for a box van. plenty of flat surfaces inside for insulation and plenty of space on the flat roof for Solar?

If you get one with a drop down tail lift, your laughing?

No im not selling one self build to buy another lol.

Ive a strange feeling the person selling the euramobil on here may have sold it elsewhere as he posted the add on march 30th and hasnt been on here since march 31st which is strange if youre selling something.

Yes that’s amazing especially with that much brass at stake, unless he’s been ill or something.

Congratulations on your purchase, l have no doubt with your skills and knowledge that the end result will meet what Varios are all about.
Will you consider doing a thread we can follow,so many have taken an interest in the Vario that it would be great to see the final result.

You can pick up a shipping container quite cheaply - it will look lovely on your Mom’s driveway with a couple of hanging baskets 🤣

Now that might be worth a viewing. Can't see me ever running out of power in that lol.

Not sure about the strange rear lounge setup though lol

Alter the front one to make it into a U shaped one (not using the cab) then change the rear into a mahoosive bed for you and the pooches with loads of storage underneath for all your lovely tools! ;)

Its the wind up and down bit i thought was strange. It apparently makes a desk or something.

Oodles of power though ive severely tempted.

Anyone live near bury lol

Tam

Congratulations on making the decision about selling the Vario, and as you say it is going to a place where your work has been appreciated.

That is one decision out of the way, so the fog is clearing a bit.

Short -term decision is tool storage. Is a small shed a possibility if you promise Mum it will only be temporary, to be removed when you have a MH garage. Maybe tack on a small kennel with an open side, so they can see out, for the dugs?

As for next MH there seem to be quite a few around for your consideration: just bide your time; there is the right one there with your name on, just find it. That is what I did with my first MH - and it is still in the yard 13 years later.

Good Luck.

Geoff

Bang in 2x 460 lithium and 1000 watts of solar, over the top in summer, but nice to have in early spring and autumn, I would overspec everything , and buy a proper superior quality memory foam mattress , I like a good nights sleep😎

I hope you will find time for a proper build thread, that would have a massive following!👍
