Tam & co the great winter escape

But im then spending money from my nestegg that i keep for a rainy day
The rainy day appears to have arrived a while ago and has stayed put ... don't make the mistake of never touching your dosh when you really could benefit from it - make use of your nest egg to get what you want as you never know when you might have the opportunity again as you know you can earn it back but there are things that you might sacrifice now which you will never ever recoup or forgive yourself for. How big a 'puddle' do you need to see before it becomes a no-brainer?

We've saved and saved and saved, yes it has benefitted us but in hindsight I wish I'd used some of it in the past rather than being 'afraid' to touch it as then it would likely have been more beneficial to us than now.

Another “what if “ Tam,say you actually did the Vario the input in both skill set and manhours is mammoth particularly considering the constraints on you having to earn a living, look after you best pals, not forgetting keeping Mum sweet along with the shopping trips and so on, and in the unlikly event you could complete the Vario, “What if “ in consideration of all the above it didn’t meet your expectations and you didn’t like it.

l know you are careful with your hard earned money but what l do know about you is that any purchase is considered with the residual value in mind at the purchase point and laying your money out in another “oven ready MH” therefore,it will still be intact when you eventually sell said vehicle.

You have entered our hearts mate.
Yes i have to admit all those things have crossed my mind too.

I know to date ive probably put 200 + hours in to the Vario and theres no way to get that back.
That said the prices they fetch if done to a high standard is eye watering. The problem is im not sure if i could get it to that level anytime soon.

I do tend to buy a motorhome and cars that i feel i can resell without losing money. Ive been lucky with the last few that ive made a bit profit on them...but that doesn't always happen.

Getting a bargain these days is a lot harder , ive still not got a car as the prices and mileages are crazy .

That said getting another motorhome is not an urgent thing as i do have the caravan for now and although it would be nice to get away a few weekends or weeks between now and winter time i could survive without doing it till the right van came up.

I think the main thing just now is to make a decision on the vario whether to sell it or struggle on , at the moment i think im mostly on the sell it and free up my time side...but im giving myself a day or 2 to be sure and not do anything rash.

The interested party has kindly stated i can have some time to think about it.

I appreciate that but you've to remember i have no pensions or property etc to rely on , and ive no idea how long ill live , and a life of poverty in a grotty flat in my 70's isn't that attractive lol. I actually once said id make sure i was skint before getting old so the government couldn't get it lol. But its not so easy to actually do it 😁🤣

You have got it right, just to say if you move the Vario on l think your mind will take a big breath as it will be clear of the task you have set yourself and will give you space to reflect and consider your next move.
Nothing happens until you make it happen.

Yeah ive seen both of them abd and they are way overpriced. Theres one like those available at £17k

And theres a 2005 model 700 on ebay for 24k ...but also rhd

The one that sold the other day was perfect. I just wasn't quick enough.

The 600 thats on for £25 is nice but not sure if id prefer the bigger van again for more space. Even if it is going back to a tag

In Glasgow as well
Aye thats why its so dear ....it has scottish tax on it

Im having the same issues finding a car , they are overpriced everywhere but up here they are asking 3k for a 2007 with 200k miles on the clock lol

Crazy prices

Cost nothing to make an offer. Yo will also get the big money at the other end if you decide to sell it.

I empathise... when I retired it was incredibly difficult to change my saving for a "rainy day" ethic to a spending one (not that retirement is a rainy day)

It's a balance to be achieved. Be sensible about the future but don't deprive yourself in the present...
Because who knows how the future will turn out, health, wealth or relationship-wise.

This was the car i had bought on ebay and was supposed to go collect tomorrow. But i started to question the sellers story about taking it in part exchange ....he has no v5 for it or any other documents. Sounds more like a salvage auction to me

He also states he's been druving it around the last 2 weeks but it hasn't been taxed for a while.

His add is carefully worded to include spares or repair to cover any comeback .

Can't tax it till you get a v5 and for a new owner applying via a v62 it could take 6 weeks.

I asked him questions to see if he could ease my mind and he ignored me so im not buying it.

Had i been closer id have had a look at it and perhaps id have felt better but ive already wasted the train fare im not willing to just go down and take it

Stephen

As Tam pointed out above he has no pension nor property, whereas you are probably getting a pension from the 'Old' BA scheme, which I was in for 5 years(paying 10.5% of salary) and that bought me 13 years at BAA - I have others and property, so our thinking may be very different from Tam's.

The principle remains valid. The why's & wherefore is not relevant.

A limited amount, to last for how long?

In any case I was simply empathising with his reluctance to touch his rainy day fund.

I've certainly not amassed the resources you seem to have done.
But with careful husbandry, it should be enough...

Tam, does rhd have to be a deal breaker?
As you know mine is rhd, getting it registered out here was not a problem, nor too expensive (depends on it's age). Driving it is dead easy.
I've got used to my LHD car now but it took a while, driving tge moho has never been a problem.

Might have driven it on trade plates and who would want any comeback on a 259k car?
Best to go with your gut feelings though.

Yeah thats why i wasn't sure . I know you got yours done as i remember talking to you about it. So its not a big deal breaker but it would be handy . And if im changing Vans again id like to see what comes up first i think

True but then he just needed to tell me that instead of ignoring the question.

It still wouldn't explain the no v5 though.

Usually traders will take the whole v5 and the seller sends bthe yellow section to DVLA. To have no v5 or v5c seems strange.

He has another car listed thats accident damaged so im suspecting he buys from total loss auctions.

You might see it on the next series of "cant pay we'll take it away" 😂

Without wanting to badmouth my mum on here or go down a route of trying to untangle the mess that's happened up till now , my mum and i have always had a quite Rocky relationship , my sister and mum are the same because neither of us simply agree with her but instead have our own minds. My brother being the oldest has always just cowed down to mum and given in to her stubbornness and often manipulative behaviour.

Im aware that the situation isn't ideal , i appreciate its my mums house etc , she's houseproud and set in her ways. She's more than entitled to be that way in her own house etc. What i can't understand or tolerate is her telling me on one hand that myself and the dogs are welcome and how she hates to see animals mistreated , abandoned etc . But on the other hand she often acts like a petulant child and goes in the huff with me and and the dogs, if the dogs don't submit to being petted etc she talks to them like children sending them away etc.

With ela its one step further. She almost refuses to call her by her name , she calls her everything from horse, big yin , pest , interloper etc etc , if ela is not lying down like a statue she's constantly telling her to lie down , or saying what's she doing now etc etc , milo is her favourite because he will go up on her knee and lie there being cuddled. I've tried time and time again to explain that ela has a past we don't know about , she flick's from being good and coming when asked etc to looking at you like a complete stranger but it will take time , she says she understands this but 10 minutes later she's back to doing the same thing.

Ive to constantly tiptoe around on eggshells at times as does my sister. She seems to enjoy being miserable and negative and she's been that way since her spell in hospital a few years back.

So today im just staying in the caravan out the way with my dogs ,who are all relaxed and sleeping as usual.

If i could re-home mum id solve a lot of problems lol.
Stay out the way in the caravan. You are relaxed in there with just your pups I think. Your mum is not helping with Ela at all and it is not fair on any of you.

Nigh on impossible now after brexit.

as above he's buying damged repairables without paperwork as many usuallyare

gus-lopez Hmm good point gus, I hadn't thought of that! Ssems I got sorted in the nick of time.
I know some newish Brit neighbours (residents) are having the horrors because they didn't get their driving licenses changed in time and as things stand will now have to take the Spanish driving test.
The B thinf has certainly made life more complicated.

Tam, have always loved all your threads and your honesty and openness is heartwarming. Not one to post often but hope some of alternatives going through my head might give you option.

it seems a Vario vs Ela situation and there is only one of those you can put on hold! As I read it the Vario does not owe you loads of money and return for hours would only be retrieved if you finish the project and it is your ambition, so why not have a plan to store it for at least a year, even if it,dare I say, means you paying storage and it puts less pressure on your mum. Any funsters with a bit of land spare?Next buy a hobby, sell the caravan, and live in it for the summer with the dogs and you know what you are going away in next winter. Buy a car for deliveries, spend the days with the dogs and going on occasional trip. When delivering could the little dogs stay with your mum and take Ela with you in the car , good company and ‘guard dog’😀

Just a thought!

Well it's a crazy time to be viewing cars but ive finally bought one.

A 2 owner Renault clio dynamique estate 1.5dci 2010. It was listed on gumtree at 22.10 about 25 miles away so i borrowed mums car and drove through. Had no choice but to go tonight as he had over 40 text messages for it in the 10 minutes i was arranging to go through ...he showed me these when i got there.

Cars are just going nuts at present.

So anyway i got it for £1000 , its not as big as a skoda or Volvo estate but its got a decent sized boot. Had lots of new bits fitted to it and its mot till next January so it will do for now.

Ill have to go back in the morning to collect it but im pleased with it.

Ill post a pic or 2 tomorrow once its home and given a wee clean .

Something else that annoys me about dealers.

This is the hobby 700 i enquired about 4 days ago and i was told it was sold.
Why is the dealership renewing the add for it everyday? Wasting peoples time in the hope they can sell them something else dearer like she offered me ...another hobby at £36k

Tam, I looked at a scooter at a good price for what it was, the advert came down the day after (Friday) as somebody must have bought “the bargain” it was back on again on the Monday afternoon, as the guy who left the deposit never told his wife, who informed him he wasn’t allowed to have it and under no circumstances come back into the house without the deposit refunded🤷🏼‍♂️ This could have happened with the van, another call to them will cost nowt👍👍
