Tam & co the great winter escape

Unless im in the company of someone i think would struggle to understand me then i talk scottish.🤷‍♂️ Most people off here thats ever met me would struggle to understand if i spoke like i do when home so i tone it down for their benefit.

Im not from the highlands so my accent isnt as strong as it is north of aberdeen but i have a pretty broad fifer accent
I used to go to Aberdeen for work sometimes and couldn't understand most of what the locals said.

I remember working all over Scotland (after living there for 7 years in an earlier life) and would stand in amazement when speaking to people around Dingwall. Never knew you could speak whilst breathing in AND out.

We were once parked on a carpark somewhere in Scotland (can't remember where) and a car pulled in. A young couple got out, saw our Spanish reg plates and came over to speak to us. They were from Barcelona and touring in the UK, and they were so relieved that they could understand us 🤭. They thought they'd lost their grasp of the English language cos they couldn't understand a word of what was being said to them in Scotland 😊.

I am currently sat in my local Bar having a cool one, the owner is a great pal and a Aberdonian and after fourteen years l still struggle to understand him, the funny thing is l think he believes me to deaf, daft and stupid as l am constantly asking him to repeat things as are other regulars but nobody dare’s to tell him we can’t understand a bloody thing he says😂😂😂

Lived in Scotland for over 40 years and have now mastered most of the Scottish accents and Scottish words and phrases. However the Doric as spoken in Aberdeen etc. is still a foreign language to me (and I suspect to most Scots). The people from Inverness, although close geographically to Aberdeen are said to have the clearest accents in the UK. Even if that's not true it's a lovely accent to listen to.

I agree with that and would extend the comment to all the coast along the Moray Firth.

Not only the accent but in my experience the Syntax as well. The accent has what I would call a gentle lilt to it, with the lack of some of the harshness of some Scottish accents - did anyone mention Glasgow?

Both Moray accent and syntax could put a lot of Englishmen to shame.

Have lived away from ome for over 40 years, when I first go home to my birth villlage, sister has to come out with me to translate. By day 2 John can't understand most of what i say (not a lot of change there 😉) our accent is quite harsh, but quiet Except when i shout. Love the soft west highland accent.

Just stayed in mainz today and ill drive over to bernkastel kues tomorrow as ive s few days of long drives to do from monday.

Lovely sunny day so just chilled out.

Not sure where im going to park in bernkastel as the aire nearby is €2 per hour now including overnight.

Treat yourself to a Stellplatz - Reil on the Moselle is great and was 8 euros without leccy or 10 euros with. Fresh water, grey and black dump and toilets!! Very convenient for the vets.

Only 5km down the road to Lieser, I mentioned it a few posts ago, you could walk into Bernkastel.

Lidl & Aldi often have time limits in Germany.

Tam I think you will find the first hour is free, we have never paid 🤔 but you still take a ticket to prove that's when you got there. 😁

How about this. 🤔 Bob.
Parkplatz

Parkplatz is 2.8 k to walk down, you then do the town castle and waterfall on the way back. 😯😁

Yeah i saw that but no good for overnight I meant. But i may park over the other side of the river and just go to that carpark for visiting the vet.

Its the time in the morning thats the issue. Don't want to be too far away . But ill work something out tomorrow

I think the one you've linked is the one ive earmarked over the river

With regard to accents, there is a scene in The 13th Warrior where the scholar Antonio Banderas, who does not speak “Viking”, listens around the campfire and gradually starts to understand their words. I have a friend from Kirkcaldy who I did not understand at all but, during a number of evenings in the pub with him, I gradually started to hear the words he was saying as something other than gibberish - not to say that I am a scholar😂.

Well thats the vet part over . Mr marks is quite a character lol. We say about Germans and their sense of humour , he dropped a few clankers.
One being after he made a mistake , " killing 6 million jews didn't help us to write ". Didn't know where to look with that one lol.
Then it was on to the Ukraine war ... and he said he was a part of an online group raising money to send laser pointers to the ukraine for them to attach to their guns so they could shoot the Russians and avoid all the ukraine refugees single mothers flocking to Germany 🤷‍♂️

Very awkward

But anyway he took my word on the dogs weight , handed me the tablets and stamped the passports . €24 all in , cash only which of course i didn't have so had to go hunt down an ATM.

A very helpful man on the street showed me where one was and had me follow him 2 streets away and then offered to hold the dogs for me till i went inside which was very kind.

So all done now , i need to do a shop at Lidl and then hit the road. I think ill aim for somewhere in belgium for tonight
