Tam & co the great winter escape

The Latin language stuff is interesting. I was there over 40 years ago with a group of architecture students and our guide was called Virgil which amused us. It was Ceaucescu's time and I saw him quite close up as a long official convoy drove past me in Bucharest.. All the cars were Renault 12s apart from his which was a big Merc. We had a 21st birthday in the Carpathians and someone was sick, and a towel used to mop it up! As we were touring we were asked for the towel everywhere we stopped after that, and before we left we had to pay for it! The tweka that they drank was vicious stuff. But we had an excellent time and some of the lads sold their jeans and trainers to locals who really wanted them! We spent one interesting evening in a local hotel drinking and playing silly rugby drinking games. Two local men who didn't speak any English joined in and really enjoyed themselves. The police came to our hotel twice that night as we were keeping a skiing party awake and they had to get up at 5!! It was a very successful field trip and we had 2 reunion parties afterwards. I am still in touch with one of the students - now a highly regarded architect with all the trimmings - boat, apartment in Barbados etc. Your village photos really reminded me of the trip.

Interesting to see that Romanian language is Latin/Italian rather than Slavic.

Really interesting … you can see the Latin roots and having o level Latin plus degree level French/Spanish I can make most of it out. I love the evolution of languages.

Northernraider, you probably have no idea how much I am enjoying joining you on your travels, especially around Romania. Thank you for all the photos. I know it can be very time consuming preparing them and putting on here, especially when you have three hungry mouths to feed and exercise.
One of the appeals of Romania is that it is relatively unspoilt but, as you have noticed, there is quite a lot of poverty and I found that quite depressing. Like you, I didn’t want to be a voyeur and be seen photographing the seedier side of the country.
We wild camped for the majority of our time in Romania and never felt unsafe. However, I remember overnighting on the edge of a forest and when we drove off the next morning discovered a large gypsy encampment, like the one you saw, just around the corner.
I am surprised you haven’t taken photos of the horse and carts on the roads, or aren’t they around these days?

The hillside near the last village had terracing. Looked like it was abandoned or was it just not cultivated due to it being winter? Vinyards perhaps?

It’s winter and cold, grass picks up in may onwards. Shepherds go up end of may. Usually is snow down till end of March, this year was a very mild one.

I've come to the conclusion that Romania is just one big barking dog.

Unless you are in the middle of nowhere like i was in that snow you can guarantee you will hear a dog bark every second of the day. And if you should have a dog and go a walk then you will have dogs barking , jumping at gates and basically going mental the entire walk , if you have a jumpy nervous dog like ela is a lot of the time its absolute torture and takes any enjoyment out of a walk . No one walks dogs here they just put them in the garden and let them make a bloody racket.

Talking of dogs ... I'm getting withdrawal symptoms again ... can we have some more piccies of the pooches please oh great hairy one? :giggle:

We had a little walk around medias earlier.

Twas too early for lunch so moved on ....theres literally hundreds of interesting little villages here you could waste an hour or two exploring. But with no sun i need to drive at least a few hours a day just to keep the cold out the van and out enough charge in the batteries for the lights etc ...not getting enough to run heater unfortunately, split charger and old batteries just doesn't do it .

We found a lot of rural Spain like that. There seemed to be a house with a bit of land fenced off and a bloody great dog hurling itself at it …… then repeat every 100 yds

Same in Portugal.

Yeah trust me on this neither Spain ot Portugal or any of the other countries ive visited have been anything like romania for this.

That's why i mentioned it , ive encountered barking dogs in every country but this is a whole different level.

Stopped for lunch here in slimnic .... had a walk around the old 14th century fortress . This was once open to the public but as its now very unstable its fenced off ......but we managed to sneak in 😁
