Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

Has the not going out to eat/ drink or coffee and snacks affected your experience of Greece?
It’s one of the habits we like when traveling, especially in Portugal with the pastel de nata and coffee.
I wouldn't say its spoiled it in any way but i do think the atmosphere is probably different and i enjoy being able to eat lunch out here and there or grab a beer or coffee when out on a walk so its a shame not to be able to.

But that said ...many of the places ive stayed i might not have been able to if everything was open

So im unsure to be honest .....

So ive moved today and im now at a quiet little cove parked at a closed taverna near siderona.

My next stop will be the corinth canal as i want to fly the drone there and hopefully get a ship going through it

And then its decision time

Ill have around 15 or 16 days to make my way to Bulgaria ..... because of the lockdown i missed a lot of greece as i drove from lefkada to Elea ....so i cant decide ....do i go west and visit Olympia then cross at patras north to the meteora monestary and then east and north to Bulgaria red line
OR do i cross the corinth canal and head up through larissa etc blue line

Obviously missing out any big cities etc because thats the higher risk areas

Can't decide

Im not fussed about missing anything as i will definitely be back to greece hopefully next year with a different van.

A fellow passenger on a P&O cruise waited all day at the Corinth canal to get a pic of a ship going through, a train going over and a plane in the air above!

That would be a great pic 👍

That said though i want to get some with the drone so i really dont want planes 🤣🤣🤣
Theres a few overnight spots near it so im hoping i can get at least a ship going through

Not tested , just usual 6 weekly checks , and short answer NO its not just engine everything will be past its best JMHE At that mileage you are buying into a rolling rebuild , one thing after another .

Goes to show they go on and on & on if looked after....👍🏼
Yeah ive seen a few with high miles but thats the highest ive personally seen on a dash.

Ah ok i thought he meant like taxi tests

But yes i get what you're saying regarding miles. Although id imagine it has had a lot changed on it regularly.

Bodywise it looks not to bad in the pics compared to some with less miles

Price is attractive though ....
I know some buses and coaches can do millions of miles in a lifetime. Triggers broom theorem applies though.
Yeah id imagine its had most mechanicals changed ...some quite a few times

Downside is trying to check mot history on buses it dont tell you anything

In answer to your serious question - no it's just to high a mileage especially if you are be going to spend a fair chunk on the conversion.
Around half that and I might give it a punt but I would want to see a lot of service history.

Yeah i think its a bit high for me but one of the cheapest ive seen for a while.

Any drone restrictions flying over/near the canal...
Is it politically or militarily sensitive?

I've no idea

When you connect it to the app it tells you if any restrictions in the area ....some are no fly zones if near airports etc but others are simply a fly with caution etc

Won't know till i go to fly it ....the software wont allow it to take off if its in a restricted area

Just wondered as its a "known" place
Not sure what you mean by "known"

I don't know anything about it other than its very narrow and links the seas

Not really looked at it yet ...just looks like it would be interesting to get aerial shots

Nothing untoward, just that it's presumably a tourist attraction and thus is monitored, so more difficult to fly under the radar (pun intended).
There was a well publicised case about a group of tourist amateur plane spotters being arrested as potential spies for taking snaps at an airport.
Drones seem to agitate opinion..

Frighteningly, the incident I recall was apparently nearly 2 decades ago (doesn't time "fly")...

Ah ok ...well there are rules youve to follow if theres people about etc regarding how far away and how high its to be but generally as long as its 150feet away from them its allowed.

Most folk tend to be more interested in it than objecting so far

But with covid etc i cant see there being many folks about

So ignore me - plenty of youtube vids... and googling drone corinthian canal restrictions doesn't get any hits.

Apologies for fretting.

No worries ...to be fair im new to the drone and dont know the legalities in other countries so i basically just do the old method of if nothing there telling me i cant do it then its ok

If ever im where theres signs saying no drones like the places in germany i dont fly it

But the general rules are unless its an airport or military zone then no one owns the airspace so you can fly over an area saying no drones as long as you take off and land outwith those signs.

The place at epidavros had no signs but 2 women came out and told me i couldn't fly over the site which is untrue 😉 i just have to be 150 feet high when i do it

But i just grabbed what pics i could and then left.

Not worth getting in bother for

I plan to park up here as it seems the best spot ....can get pics from the bridge too

@park4night :

Interesting parking to walk on the bridge over the canal. We are right in the middle, in the highest part. Possibility of easy walk to the submersible bridge (about 6km round trip).

I cannot imagine MY Greece without that experience and also in my local haunts of sitting in the same local taverna and sending over krasi to the friends' tables.

Well Tam has said he will go back so maybe next year he and I will both be there and I will drag him out for a couple of long lunches with the fishermen.

Yes because ive not been before ive had plenty to keep me occupied anyway but i imagine that some places ive been would be nicer when theres music and people and more traditional stuff etc.

I do wonder if it would be harder to wildcamp though.

Not had much bother this time because its pretty quiet.

V.nice.we have 1 given to my wife by a great old fisherman on Patmos 🇬🇷

Patmos? Now you are talking.

My favourite island and I have had my boat moored there, in various ports and bays over the last 25 years for about 100-150 days total?

Now the name of the fisherman and from which port? Was it a guy in a small fishing boat in Grikou by any chance, because it is just the sort of thing he would do? I know his name but please tell me the name of the guy who gave the shell.

Please tell more about when and for how long/years you were there - by PM if you wish.

Geoff

I do not thinks so based on the sort of places you like by the sea, which I have observed while mooring there.

There has never been a proliferation of MHs so that they overwhelm a place, well not in my area of mainland Greece, but of course they do not often get to the Aegean islands.

Geoff

I'd be interested but would think it would be best to inspect it first. What would concern me is all those side, front& rear skirts which could be hiding a rust nest horror.
Yeah the skirts are ugly and id be removing them but to be honest they are attached only to the bottom inch of the cills and unlike other vans the cills on these are actually below the floor line.
A full set of cills from mercedes is £162

But yeah its not ideal for buying unseen.

Ive my eye on another bus that's better suited and with less miles and full merc service history

But unless its the right price ill be passing on that one too

Yes apart from a couple of places ive often been the only van there except for jackie ...so its not like Spain and Portugal where theres usually always a few

Why are you time limited ? As you entered the Schengen zone before 31st Dec no country knows you are in EU so you could stay there as long as you like ignoring the 3 month in 6 months limitation. Surely it’s only when you leave the UK again and get stamped as having entered the Schengen zone that the 3/6 month issue will arise ?
