Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Anyway I’m all for Starlink…and if I knew how to turn 12v to 48v…what a POI is and how to 3D print I’d get one in a heartbeat…perhaps I’ll send myself on an electronics course…😊

Couple.of what look like 3d printed DIY versions Hugoman
And the resi one.

Coolcats to be fair, Gromett never said that 3G didn’t exist, just that it didn’t work, which to be honest (see my above post) it didn’t work! The important points of his (Gromets) posts have been related to the comparison of an early Sat internet solution with Starlink!
It is interpretation if you said radios are not a ‘thing’ then in fairness it is reasonable to assume the individual is saying radios do not exist rather than radios have poor reception. Now in fairness Gromett has since explained his perspective.

2005 is a long time ago and 3G has a retirement date.

If ever there was a case for the phrase...."does it matter"

Here it is..
Edit
Back to the thread..it looks to me Starlink.is gonna grow and grow. The consumption of data for everyday folks is growing rapid.

My Starlink speed test.

Get this from my 5G router
Download: 246 Mbps
Upload: 5.83 Mbps
Ping: 14 ms
Connection Type: Wi-Fi
Server: London

My 4G connection has fallen to 1-2Mbps and is practically unusable. Thankfully a very kind person has lent me their 5G router which actually does work here strangely. Mine arrives on Mon/Tue.

If 5G works, it is amazing. But in a 30 mile radius of here. there are only 2 other very small locations with coverage. 30 miles north there is Grimsby. 30 miles south there is nothing except for a small bit of Skegness. To the west Louth has a small area of coverage near the bypass and there is nothing more until you get to Lincoln.

In case anyone is curious. New 5G routers are around £500 if you can't get included in a contract. Three/EE don't give them out unless you are definitely well within a service area.
So if you want one or want one without a contract this option is pretty good. £179 for an as new reconditioned unit. Still has 1 year warranty etc.
Get the cheaper of the two if you want an external antenna. The more expensive one has a faster spec but not antenna ports from what I can make out.

If you are near an area where three/smarty are providing service, or travel to one. This is worth a go. Works on 4G as well when 5G not available.

Hi

Have you read the small print for starlink ref mounts, modifications and voiding warranty

It's a riveting read as any modification or use of non starlink items voids all warranty

If could print my own stuff or buy cheaper I would because who will know what happened to it or why

I think you will probably find that the terms are designed for the US market. Consumer law in this country prevents warranty void provisions that are excessive.

I just went to read them as I was curious as to what you found onerous. I couldn't see anything that was out of order or did I miss something?

RM_Marine unless you were talking about this? In which case again totally fair as far as I can see?

Those that keep quoting 5G and all that yes if your in a signal area then that's fine but when you go roaming site to site not all sites have 5G in fact some struggle with 4G.

Me, my setup is sited so residential is ideal and I cannot get fibre here and also I'm not in a 5G area.

As to modifications I've purchased my kit outright so if I bugger it up when I flat mount it then it's my fault and no one else but I have the skills to carry out the changes and if needs be I have a 3D printer.

We all have different needs and comparing 5G to Starlink is like comparing coal to gas, they do the same heat or provided internet but they are two different products ones hit and miss (5G) the other (Starlink) has constant internet regardless where you are.

We are data hungry.

All my maps, navigation, sites, pictures, books, videos are all online.

I could buy paper maps, but they cost a fortune, are inconvenient and I never have the right one.

I could get an Aire’s book, but the reviews aren’t there, it won’t be up to date.

I could use a DVD player or memory stick, but that means more stuff to carry or prepare.

It’s all about convenience. Society is moving towards a must have connection and data existence and starlink fills the gap.

So far this holiday, us and the kids have chugged through 120GB of data in 10 days. That’s only going to get worse as more services move to streaming instead of download.

The device I mentioned in post #224 above has arrived and is really, really fast. I am really happy with 250mbps+ :)
Sorry to ask a stupid question ☹️ But what is the benefit of having a router over a MiFi devide….I can carry that around with me if I want ? I expect you’ll say speed 🙄 or is it because you attach it to a Startlink or something?

What speeds does it produce if not in a 5g area ?
How long is a bit of string. Depends on your signal strength and how many other people are using the same tower.
The reason I went for it is because although I am right next to a 4G tower I am also next to a Caravan Club campsite. Normally on 4G I was getting at least 20Mpbs. But now it is full in the evenings it drops to 1-2mbps.

Sorry I can't give a specific answer to that one. Also I haven't tested this particular router on 4G.

If you can find a MiFi device that supports 5G... ???

For me the advantage of a full router is my computer and laptop connects to it via ethernet. I avoid Wifi where I can.

Ah right…thanks….I don’t have a computer or laptop. No I don’t use WiFi either…just a Sim in my MiFi device. I suppose that would have to change if I went down the Starlink route.

Ah a local WiFi network yes…I thought you meant Campsite WiFi
In my case I meant any wifi at all. I prefer to avoid wireless connections when a wired one is possible or practical. (y)
